The vision was caught and trips were planned. Two mission teams have just returned from Haiti. The first team prepared and planted a garden space for Haiti Christian Orphanage in hopes of providing fresh produce to the orphans. This involved hauling several truckloads of dirt by wheel barrow uphill to an area located inside church ruins. The dirt had to be leveled and sectioned off into rows, then planted with seeds (see pictures on page 6). When the second team left Haiti, some of the seeds had already sprouted! The main objective of the second team was to minister to children the orphans as well as community children who wander into the orphanage compound for a safe place to play. Three days of ministry to the children involved playing sports with the kids, feeding them an American meal of chicken bog, providing items of necessity like hygiene kits and clothes and sharing the love of Christ with them through stories, scripture, songs and using witnessing dolls to share the gospel. Most of all, the team members just loved on the children. These children are in survival mode just trying to live another day, though they are literally starving to death. The orphanage often doesn t have enough money to buy enough food for the children, let alone clothes or other things. I would like to see our churches partner with the orphanage for a two year period to help (continued on page 6) Church News 4 Haiti Interest Meeting 4 Ministry Assistants Luncheon 4 Student Ministry Update 5 Haiti Trip Report/Photos 6-7 North American Missions 8
2 Page 2 CASTING THE VISION We truly believe that in our society today women are so busy with life that we never slow down long enough to work on our relationship with Christ and with other women. At Women of Joy, we make these relationships our main priority. Whether you are on a lifelong adventure of drawing closer to Christ or are just figuring things out, make Women of Joy part of the journey. You will find an endless supply of encouragement and an atmosphere that refreshes your soul. 3 Volume 35, Issue 3 BAPTIST COLLEGIATE MINISTRY UPDATE Thank you to everyone who contributed so that we could scholarship students to attend Converge! It was an amazing weekend, as we had over 30 students participate. Two students trusted Christ for salvation! We celebrate new life and we are excited to see them take next steps. We also had several students who felt like the Lord was calling them to something speci ic as far as serving in a mission context over the summer. Weekends like this are so crucial to our ministry, and we are thankful for your partnership, which helps them be possible! As we approach Spring, we are currently trying to make a inal decision about the annual BCM Golf Tournament. With so many con licts on the horizon, we are trying to determine the best action. This tournament is incredibly important to our missions fundraising goals, and so we are trying to make sure we do what we can to see if it is possible this year. We will have a team of 15 serving in Pittsburgh over Spring Break! We took an exploratory trip in September to identify a possible mission partner, and we had so many students sign up that we actually had to tell some we didn t have room. We will leave at the beginning of CCU Spring Break and serve the city of Pittsburgh for several days. Will you pray for our students as they give part of their break to serving in another context? We continue to meet every Tuesday night, and we are still hoping and praying for partners to come alongside of us to help with those nights. Our primary need is for churches to provide food for students. Each week we feed around students prior to our gathering. If you or your church would be willing to adopt BCM for a night, please let me know as quickly as possible! Thanks so much for your partnership in the Gospel! Thank you for your prayers, support, and encouragement! David Neace, BCM Director davidneace@hotmail.com Page 3 Reflections on the Haiti Mission Trip When I met Jasper Washington, director of Haiti Christian Orphanage, and heard him speak at our October 2017 association meeting, my heart was stirred and desire to make a difference filled me. I asked to travel with the mission team already scheduled to go in February. But what would I do there? After talking with Jasper and the Director, I planned to use my administrative skills to set up an office for Jasper and pre-plan logistics for the next mission trip there. Little did I know that the Lord had additional plans for me. Haven been given a bag full of witnessing dolls, I stuffed a few in my checked bag as fillers, thinking that those who would be working with the kids might be able to use them. They stayed in the suitcase until the last day. It was Carnival - or Haitian Mardi Gras, and many businesses and schools were closed. Not many children were around. As the team waited at the orphanage, kids began to trickle in to join some of the orphans living there. One of the team members mentioned that we should probably do something with the kids already there, and I reminded her that the witnessing dolls were in the bag. She thought that was a great idea and started calling the kids. Then she turned to me and said, Will you share the gospel with them so we can watch and learn how? We ve never used the dolls before? Of course I agreed, and immediately used one of the dolls to explain Jesus love and share the gospel. As I finished, and issued an invitation for them to invite Jesus into their heart, 11 children responded and prayed to receive Jesus! Had I planned on that? No. In fact I had specifically shared with our associate pastor that I would not be actively sharing the gospel on this trip. But God had other plans. I didn t have to stop and think about it I just did it. And I realized my plans are not always God s plans.his are so much better. His caused the angels in heaven to rejoice because the names of 11 precious children were written in the Lamb s Book of Life! My heart was moved; and a burden for the folks of Haiti was planted in it. Funny how things often end up different than we plan and think.but when we allow the Lord to lead, it s always perfect! The goal is to lead the orphanage to become self-sustaining in these two years, but during these years to provide assistance as well as teams to go to teach and minister. I am asking you to prayerfully consider partnering for two years to contribute financially to the orphanage to purchase food and/or propane. Help grow God s Garden - physically and spiritually. Here s how you can be involved and invest in God s ongoing work at Haiti Christian Orphanage: Level One: Plant a Seed $50 per month Level Two: Plant a Row $100 per month Level Three: Plant a Garden $200 per month Level Four: Plant an Orchard $500 per month One time gifts are also welcomed. All donations should be made to Waccamaw Baptist Association, who will ensure that the funds are used solely for purchasing food and/or propane for the orphanage. But this I say, He which soweth sparingly shall reap also sparingly; and he which soweth bountifully shall reap also bountifully. 2 Corinthians 9:6 I count it a privilege to serve as your Director of Missions, always looking for new and exciting ways to reach the lost for Christ and minister to the needy and hurting, fulfilling our mission of sharing, strengthening, sending and starting. I look forward to sharing more about Haiti with you in coming days and weeks. Your Co-laborer in the Lord, Tommy Richardson, DOM
