PATRICK S NEWS & NOTES JANUARY 5, 2015 Dear Friends of the Mailing List: While I was gone I am coming back from vacation tonight, inheriting an astronomic phone bill after poor Fr. Ray Corkery collapsed at Mass on December 28 th. While on vacation in the middle of the Caribbean Sea, I spent the last ten days trying to figure out who was going to cover all the Masses while I was gone. The blessing from this experience is that so many priests came to the rescue over the last few weeks, from Fr. José Luis Torres, Fr. Homero Sanchez, Fr. Stan Tabor, Fr. John McGeean and Fr. Brad Baker. All of them blessed us for covering a slew of Masses to help out poor Fr. Ray. As for Fr. Ray, the last time I heard from him on Wednesday past, he told me that his spirits are good but his body was still too weak to celebrate Mass. With some bed rest and our prayers, hopefully Fr. Ray can celebrate the sacraments in the very near future. Please pray for him. While I was gone, we also suffered a great deal of loss at the parish as well. Last Saturday, we celebrated the funerals of both Patrick Ballak and William Babicki. On the last weekend of my time away, I received a call from Patricia Angeles (our part time office helper at the parish) who told me that her child in the womb for twenty weeks had passed as well (she and her husband Manuel named the baby Lupita). On a personal note, my Uncle John Jankowski also passed away while I was on vacation. As I stated in a previous , my Uncle John had suffered various bouts of 1

2 cancer over the last few years, the most recent being of the bone variety. Attached to this note is the homily for my Uncle John that I preached on December 30 th while on the cruise ship. One of our frequent office helpers at the parish, Kenna Baskerville, also asked us to pray for a special friend of hers. Kenna s note reads as follows We received bad news here in Coal City and lots of prayers are needed. Our schools superintendent Dr Kent Bugg s daughter Megan is facing the fight of her life. She is only 13 years old and on Christmas Eve Megan's parents noticed a lump on her arm. Megan said it had been there for a couple of weeks. Megan was taken to her Dr. and she has cancer. Stage 4...they immediately took all kinds of test and the cancer is throughout her body. It is a cancer of the soft tissue...the one on her arm was the only one that appeared on the outside of her body. Like her dad said what a difference a day can make. Megan is on 52 weeks of Chemo!!!! Dr. Bugg is writing daily about his daughters courageous fight against this horrible disease. You can follow Megan's journey...just go to Megan Bugg's Journey and you can read each day how she is doing. I am asking you to join TEAM MEGAN and start those prayers flowing. I also wish to pray for Jerry Linich, sr., the father of one of our Knights of Columbus leaders (Jerry Linich, jr.). Jerry the son has been offering daily updates concerning his father s condition, which actually is beginning to improve over the last few days. This Wednesday, I will also be visiting my 85 year old godmother and aunt, Concetta Mazzulla, who is going through some physical struggles in her life as well. My Aunt Concetta is from my mother s side of the family and I am sure the family (me too!) would appreciate your prayers at this time. Ok, I get it we ve had lots of suffering and loss these last two weeks. The blessing is that if God is in our hearts, then physical suffering pales in comparison to that presence of God, a love that will be with us for the rest of our existence. It s good stuff. I ll save the rest of the notes for next week, when hopefully we can talk about some of the good things happening at St. Pat s (mind you, we had three weddings the week after Christmas, and that is always a nice thing). Actually, this week good stuff is happening you are praying for this community and we are blessed because of those prayers and because of YOU! BTW, we are about $3,000 away from tiling under the pews of the church, which Jim Smith and the Parish Council has asked us to do for some time. Also, much thanks to our anonymous donor who provided the resources so that we could paint over our 2

3 classroom chalkboards, turning them into white boards!!! Thanks, Jim Smith and volunteers for making this job possible during the Christmas break. Attached is next week s bulletin and the homilies from last week. Have a blessed week! God Bless, Rev. Peter G. Jankowski Gloria Dei Vivens Homo - St. Irenaeus of Lyons PULPIT ANNOUNCEMENTS 1. Per our bishop s request, we will be taking a special collection next weekend on behalf of those who suffer from the WEST AFRICAN EBOLA VIRUS. We thank you for your generosity. 2. Next weekend will be the last time that you can pick up the PARISH CALENDARS in church. We will have calendars still available in the office for those who desire them. Much thanks to the funeral homes of Fred C. Dames, Blackburn-Giegerich- Sonntag and Carlson-Holmquest-Sales for providing this service to us for PLEASE PRAY FOR OUR SICK Joe & Joan Bannon, Paul Berg, Don Cordano, William Dante, Mae Delaney, Richard Duke, Pat Gossman, Dan Green, Jerry Huston, Rich Jankowski, Benita & Leonard Kern, Pat Magosky, Tom Meyer, Don Prodehl, Bill Shega, Bernie Spieler, Graciela Torres & Evelyn Vercellotti PLEASE PRAY FOR OUR BELOVED DECEASED William Babicki, Patrick Ballak, Baby Lupita Angeles & John Jankowski 3

5 Happy New Year to all and a blessed feast of the Solemnity of Mary, Mother of God! ight days after the feast of the birth of Christ, we remember the Blessed Virgin Mary by celebratin r divine motherhood. As the Mother of God, Mary is known as Theotokus, which means the "God earer". It is fitting to honor Mary as Mother of Jesus, following the birth of Christ. When Catholic brate the Solemnity of Mary Mother of God, we are not only honoring Mary, who was chosen amo ll women throughout history to bear God incarnate, but we are also honoring our Lord, who is fully God and fully human. At each of these events, there was some manifestation of Christ's divinity. This is what Epiphany means, "to reveal." -From "Saints and Feast Days" by the Sisters of Notre Dame Safe Environment Our Safe Environment Instruction not be necessary this year as ou public schools are in compliance w our safe environment standards Please disregard the permission you were given at the beginning of year. The initials of the Magi are inscribed upon the doors with blessed chalk. (The initials, C, M, B, can also be interpreted as the Latin phrase ristus mansionem benedicat" which means "Christ bless this house" - example - C+M+B+13) Check out the following site for some great recipes and activities for the 12 Days of Christmas: The 12 Days of Christmas by Catholic Culture books of the n January 11th the Church celebrates the Solemnity of the Baptism of Our Lord. Thi brings to an end the season of Christmas. The Church recalls Our Lord's second anifestation or epiphany which occurred on the occasion of His baptism in the Jordan sus descended into the River to sanctify its waters and to give them the power to beg ns of God. The event takes on the importance of a second creation in which the entir Trinity intervenes. 16

17 the Eastern Church this feast is called Theophany because at the baptism of Christ in the River Jordan God appeared in three persons. The baptism of John was a sort of sacramental preparatory for the Baptism of Christ. It moved men to sentiments of repentance and induced them to confess their sins. Christ did not need the baptism of John. Although He appeared in the "substance of our flesh" and was recognized utwardly like unto ourselves", He was absolutely sinless and impeccable. He conferre upon the water the power of the true Baptism which would remove all the sins of the orld: "Behold the Lamb of God, behold Him Who takes away the sin of the world." Many of the incidents which accompanied Christ's baptism are symbolical of what ppened at our Baptism. At Christ's baptism the Holy Spirit descended upon Him; at o ptism the Trinity took its abode in our soul. At His baptism Christ was proclaimed th "Beloved Son" of the Father; at our Baptism we become the adopted sons of God. At hrist's baptism the heavens were opened; at our Baptism heaven was opened to us. A His baptism Jesus prayed; after our Baptism we must pray to avoid actual sin. - Excerpted from Msgr. Rudolph G.
