It s a privilege and honor to worship the Crucified, Risen, and Ascended Jesus with you today! The believers of Zion are a caring community, and we re glad to have you here! As always, make yourself at home; you are among the family of Christ. In Preparation for Worship: Please take some time to greet the people you are worshipping with! The order of worship for today is on the back of this page. You may want to take a few minutes to look it over and place a ribbon on the Psalm assigned for today as well as the Divine Service Liturgy we ll be following in the Lutheran Service Book (LSB) as you prepare to receive the gifts of God and sing His praises. May God seriously bless your worship with us this day a new day of salvation! To Stand or Sit: There are certain parts of the service where you will be invited to kneel or stand. Sometimes, wrestling with kids, or a personal health condition makes kneeling or standing uncomfortable please know: It is okay to kneel, stand, or sit. All are appropriate! So please, make yourself comfortable, receive the gifts God loves to give and BOLDLY sing His praises! THE OFFERING: If you are our guest today, you are not expected to contribute monetarily to God s work at Zion you are our guest! Please remember to fill out the Friendship Book (located at the end of the Pew) and sign our Guest Book in the narthex so we can thank you for your visit and come soon to see us again! If you choose to give an offering, know this: The gifts we give back to God are used by His church to transform lives.

P: In the name of God the Holy Spirit C: Praise to our renewing God P: Let us join our thankful voices C: Amen! Amen! Praise the Lord! Call to Worship in song: October 22, 2017 Twentieth Sunday after Pentecost Step By Step Oh God, You are my God, and I will ever praise You. O God, You are my God, and I will ever praise You. I will seek You in the morning, and I will learn to walk in Your ways, and step by step You'll lead me, and I will follow You all of my days. (repeat) Confession and Forgiveness (Please kneel and quietly pause to consider your sins) P: O God, our Father, since you have revealed the way of life for us in Your Son, Jesus, we confess with shame our slowness to learn of Him, our failure to follow Him, and our reluctance to bear the cross. C: Have mercy on us and forgive us, O Lord. P: Forgive us the poverty of our worship, our neglect of fellowship and of the means of grace, our hesitating witness for Christ, our avoiding of service to You, and our poor management of Your gifts. C: Have mercy on us and forgive us, O Lord. P: Forgive us that so little of Your love has reached others through us, that we have been thoughtless in our judgments, hasty in condemnation, grudging in forgiveness, slow to seek reconciliation, and unwilling to help our neighbors as we should. ALL: Almighty God, merciful Father, I call to You in the midst of my many trials and struggles, confessing my sins and my lack of trust in Your Word. Give me endurance, strength, and hope to live joyfully in the safety of Your everlasting arms. P: In the saving work of Christ Jesus, His life, suffering, death, and resurrection, you have forgiveness of sin, in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit! All: Amen (Be seated) (Psalm 96:1-9 (In front of Hymnal) (Spoken responsively by half verse) 2

4 Song: As The Deer As the deer panteth for the water, so my soul longeth after Thee. You alone are my heart's desire, and I long to worship Thee. You alone are my strength, my shield; To You alone may my spirit yield. You alone are my heart's desire, and I long to worship Thee. You're my friend and You are my brother even though You are a King. I love You more than any other, so much more than anything. You alone are my strength, my shield; To You alone may my spirit yield. You alone are my heart's desire, and I long to worship Thee. I want You more than gold or silver, only You can satisfy. You alone are the real joy giver and the apple of my eye. You alone are my strength, my shield; To You alone may my spirit yield. You alone are my heart's desire, and I long to worship Thee. As The Deer. I believe He was born of the Virgin Mary; suffered under Pontius Pilate. He was crucified, died and was buried. He descended into Hell; on the third day He rose again from the dead, ascended into Heaven and is seated at the right hand of God. From thence He shall come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Holy Christian Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, and the resurrection of the body and the life everlasting. Amen! 6 Closing Song: October 22, 2017 Shine, Jesus Shine Lord, the light of Your love is shining, in the midst of the darkness Shining; Jesus, Light of the world, shine upon us, set us free by the Truth You now bring us; Shine on me, Shine on me. Chorus Shine, Jesus shine, fill this land with the Father's glory. Blaze, Spirit blaze, set our hearts on fire. Flow, river flow, flood the nations with grace and mercy. Send forth Your word, Lord, and let there be light. Lord, I come to Your awesome presence, from the shadows Into Your radiance, by the blood I may enter Your brightness; Search me, try me, consume all my darkness; Shine on me, shine on me. Chorus Announcements 6

7 Isaiah 45:1-7(ESV) 1 Thus says the Lord to his anointed, to Cyrus, whose right hand I have grasped, to subdue nations before him and to loose the belts of kings, to open doors before him that gates may not be closed: 2 I will go before you and level the exalted places, I will break in pieces the doors of bronze and cut through the bars of iron, 3 I will give you the treasures of darkness and the hoards in secret places, that you may know that it is I, the Lord, the God of Israel, who call you by your name. 4 For the sake of my servant Jacob, and Israel my chosen, I call you by your name, I name you, though you do not know me. 5 I am the Lord, and there is no other, besides me there is no God; I equip you, though you do not know me, 6 that people may know, from the rising of the sun and from the west, that there is none besides me; I am the Lord, and there is no other. 7 I form light and create darkness, I make well-being and create calamity, I am the Lord, who does all these things. 1 Thessalonians 1:1-10(ESV) 1 Paul, Silvanus, and Timothy, To the church of the Thessalonians in God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ: Grace to you and peace. 2 We give thanks to God always for all of you, constantly mentioning you in our prayers, 3 remembering before our God and Father your work of faith and labor of love and steadfastness of hope in our Lord Jesus Christ. 4 For we know, brothers loved by God, that he has chosen you, 5 because our gospel came to you not only in word, but also in power and in the Holy Spirit and with full conviction. You know what kind of men we proved to be among you for your sake. 6 And you became imitators of us and of the Lord, for you received the word in much affliction, with the joy of the Holy Spirit, 7 so that you became an example to all the believers in Macedonia and in Achaia. 8 For not only has the word of the Lord sounded forth from you in Macedonia and Achaia, but your faith in God has gone forth everywhere, so that we need not say anything. 9 For they themselves report concerning us the kind of reception we had among you, and how you turned to God from idols to serve the living and true God, 10 and to wait for his Son from heaven, whom he raised from the dead, Jesus who delivers us from the wrath to come. Matthew 22:15-22(ESV) 15 Then the Pharisees went and plotted how to entangle him in his talk. 16 And they sent their disciples to him, along with the Herodians, saying, Teacher, we know that you are true and teach the way of God truthfully, and you do not care about anyone s opinion, for you are not swayed by appearances. 17 Tell us, then, what you think. Is it lawful to pay taxes to Caesar, or not? 18 But Jesus, aware of their malice, said, Why put me to the test, you hypocrites? 19 Show me the coin for the tax. And they brought him a denarius. 20 And Jesus said to them, Whose likeness and inscription is this? 21 They said, Caesar s. Then he said to them, Therefore render to Caesar the things that are Caesar s, and to God the things that are God s. 22 When they heard it, they marveled. And they left him and went away. 7
