1 CALVARY LUTHERAN CHURCH 6817 ANTRIM ROAD EDINA, MN PHONE: OFFICE CLOSED ON MONDAYS Tuesday-Friday: to 3:00 p.m. Welcome! Worship! Witness! OCTOBER 2018 PASTOR S PAGE by Pastor Wade Wacholz IT S COMING! What s coming? All Saints Day is coming! Our 80 th Anniversary is coming! Consecration Sunday is coming! On Sunday November 4 th we will have a very special day a day of gratitude and a day of remembering and a day to look forward as well. I m getting excited and I hope you are too! IT S COMING and it will be a big day. Worship will begin with our annual remembrance of the saints who have gone before us. Everyone will have the opportunity to light candles in honor of family and friends. We will add special candles in honor of 80 years of Calvary s founding and sustaining saints. The bells will ring out their remembrance too! Our worship will continue with the conclusion of our Consecration Sunday Stewardship Program. Our theme for this program is reflected in Revelation 21, where we are told that the home of God is among mortals. Here at Calvary, in our families, in our work, in our community God is with us, providing for us all that we need and all that we have. Revelation 21 also tells us that God is making all things new! In these words we have assurance that God presence is active, moving, creative God is with us to continually make us into God s community, God s family and God s church. In faith we rely on the promise of God s creative and sustaining presence as we plan for the coming year. In that same kind of faithful reliance, biblical stewardship looks beyond giving money to the church as just a way to pay the bills of the congregation. Giving is part of growing spiritually in our relationship with God. Giving is a faith act in support of the mission and ministry that God s presence makes possible. Giving is how we join with God in making all things new at Calvary and in the world. All of us have a need to give to as an expression of our faith. Instead of treating people as club members with a duty to pay dues, we are invited to look at ourselves as followers of Jesus who want to financially support and sustain the new things God is doing. The Consecration Sunday program encourages people toward proportionate and systematic giving in response the question: What percentage of my income is God calling me to give? During worship on Consecration Sunday we will ask each member to complete an Estimate of Giving Card that morning. We urge everyone to attend worship and our 80 th Anniversary luncheon on November 4 th, even those who may not be comfortable completing a card. We invite everyone to join in offering our gratitude for what God has done in our lives and for all the new things God is doing in and through us here at Calvary. Please make every effort to attend on Consecration Sunday and our Anniversary Luncheon (right after worship) to celebrate together as we remember our first 80 wonderful years, and as we look forward gratefully to our new 80 years (and more) of ministry to come. Let s all join with God to Make All Things New! See you there! 2 OCTOBER 2018 NEWSLETTER page 2 CHILDREN, YOUTH & FAMILY MINISTRY by Rebekah Moir WOW! Word on Wednesdays INSTALLATION OF Pastor Wade Wacholz: Genesis 12:1-9. For the month of October, we will be meeting at St. Alban s Episcopal Church 6716 Gleason Road (corner of Gleason and Valley View) Got questions? Contact Rebekah Moir at rmoir@calvaryedina.org WOW! Mission Project We are blessed by God to be a blessing to the world. One of the ways we do that is in mission and ministry to those in need. This year we ve set a goal to raise at least $1,000 to provide mental health resources to children and youth who might not otherwise have access. If you don t normally attend WOW! but would still like to contribute, you can write a check to Calvary and write WOW! Mission Project on the memo line. Reverend John Hulden, Assistant to the Bishop, Minneapolis Area Synod, ELCA presided over the service. From Genesis, chapter 12: Rev. John Hulden shared the story of Abram (Abraham) and Sarai (Sarah) and highlighted the commands of God: Follow! Blessing! Promise! Like Abram and Sarai, we are called to Follow! Blessing! Promise! God calls us through water, our baptism! In our baptism we loved by God as his own, we are blessed to be blessing to others as we follow Jesus! The installation concluded with a journey around the sanctuary and a blessing of hands. The journey stopped at the places of baptism, the word, the meal and at the church doors. At each place, Pastor Wade was reminded of his call: 1) Bonnie DeMarce-Koll & Tristan Koll: To be among us to baptize, teach and to forgive sins. 2) Rebekah Moir: To be among us to proclaim the good news. 3) Becky Rorke: To be among us to preside at the Lord s Table. 4) Jean & George Stenehjem: To be among us as we serve, celebrate and partner for ministry in God s Word. Follow! Blessing! Promise!
3 OCTOBER 2018 NEWSLETTER page 3 LOVE TO TELL THE STORY Sanctuary Stained Glass Have you ever wondered about the Prayers of the People? Why do we include these prayers? What are they? Perhaps guidance comes from the author of the First Letter to Timothy: (1 Timothy 2:1-3) The first thing I want you to do is pray. Pray every way you know how, for everyone you know. Pray especially for rulers and their governments to rule well so we can be quietly about our business of living simply, in humble contemplation. This is the way our Savior God wants us to live. (The Message). In our worship service, "Prayers of the People" provide structure for public prayer. Like a dance, these prayers move us through a well-defined sequence. The steps or content begin as we gather together and continue as we listen to The Word and the sermon and as we celebrate The Meal. This helps us offer prayers of petition, thanksgiving, and confession. The Prayers of the People move from the whole world and the universal Church, to our local churches and community, and finally, to our individual and personal needs. The service of Holy Communion, Setting 1 in Evangelical Lutheran Worship includes a helpful outline (pp ). This guide moves us from general prayer concerns into increasingly particular and specific prayers that reflect the wideness of God s mercy for the whole world - for the Church universal, its ministry and the mission of the gospel; - for the Well-being of creation; - for the Peace and justice in the world, the nations and those in authority, the community; - for the Poor, oppressed, sick, bereaved, lonely; - for All who suffer in mind, body or spirit; for the congregation, and for special concerns; and - for Prayers of thanksgiving for the faithful departed and may include those who recently have died and those commemorated on the church calendar. The Prayers of the People conclude with the Passing of the Peace. As we reach out to each other, we acknowledge that we are together, a community, sharing the journey of faith. Perhaps, our reaching out, reminds us that we share desires, needs, hopes, celebrations, challenges and life events. All these, we share with each other, our local community and the whole world and the universal Church. As you reach out, remember to pray every way you know how, for everyone you know. Excerpted from and We each have our story.. We each have our journey. Looking for your favorite poem, Bible verse, music, song or picture. Do you have a memory or a mentor that made a difference to your faith and life? This space is yours! Please share your story. 5 OCTOBER 2018 NEWSLETTER page 5 BE THE CHURCH.Our hearts and hands in the World & Community REACH OUT... Join ELCA World Hunger and people around the world to commemorate World Food Day on October 16 th! This is a day to create action & awareness for those suffering hunger as we work toward ensuring food security for all. Hunger remains one of the most urgent challenges our neighbors face, yet the world produces more than enough for all. ELCA World Hunger uses many approaches to help our hungry neighbors, next door & across the world. TOGETHER... For over twenty years, Calvary has partnered with VEAP to help our neighbors. The mission of VEAP is more than feeding the hungry. Their focus is to improve the lives of people, not only with food, but to identify the underlying needs and help lift people out of hunger. Note: VEAP can feed one person for one week for $1.50! Thank you for your monthly food & financial donations for VEAP! THANKS As Facility Coordinator for Calvary, Bonnie Rust spends untold hours as she organizes events such as funerals, memorial services, room rentals, weddings, scout events and lessons/classes. The monthly church calendar is posted on the church office window & the bulletin board in the Atrium. We had a very busy summer and this fall is busy with 6 rental individuals/groups for lessons, 5 Scout activities (troops, packs or leaders) as well as Calvary events. In addition, Calvary is an election site for the City of Edina. All this involves much communication & scheduling. We give thanks for the many staff & Council members responsible for facility maintenance. THANK YOU! Calvary is important to us and to our community! SHARE... Halloween will be here before you know it! Every week, volunteers from Calvary serve Meals on Wheels to our neighbors! When you purchase candy, consider donating some candy (or even your leftover Halloween candy) to Meals on Wheels. Our volunteers love candy! Just bring it to the Church of Peace office at 6345 Xerxes Ave S, Richfield. Office hours are 9:00a.m.-1:00p.m. They will see that we get it. Thanks! THANKS FOR THE MUSIC! Even though it s fall, let s take a moment to thank our summer musicians. Every summer we enjoy a variety of talented musicians and this summer was no exception. Thanks to all these special musicians! Many thanks to Cynthia Betz for making the arrangements. 6 OCTOBER 2018 NEWSLETTER page 6 STEWARDSHIP: Preparing Ourselves for Consecration Sunday By Marty Fergus, Stewardship Coordinator During the service on Consecration Sunday, November 4 th, each of us will be asked to complete his/her estimate of giving card for The key question to be addressed is, What is God calling me to share? To answer this question, a good first step would be to focus on how much we are currently giving. We might ask, What percent of my annual income am I giving to Calvary Lutheran? Then we can ask ourselves if we want to increase our support and, if so, by how much. Some denominations have a pat answer to this. They ask their members to tithe, or even to go beyond a tithe. One of the most commonly cited scriptural passages to support this ideal is Malachi 3:10 - Bring the full tithes into the storehouse, that there may be food in my house; and thereby put me to the test, says the Lord of hosts, if I will not open the windows of heaven and pour down for you an overflowing blessing. This is not generally part of the Lutheran tradition, with its emphasis on grace as opposed to works as a means to salvation, although some Lutherans do choose to tithe. And others see this as a useful goal to aim for or standard to guide us, even if it is never fully achieved. At a minimum, thinking in terms of tithing can encourage us to prayerfully ponder what our financial commitment should be for the coming year. The estimate of giving cards we will fill out on Consecration Sunday incorporate some of this tithe-based language. And we are encouraged to consider an increase in giving over the previous year. But in the end, there is no rigid formula to be applied. Our giving is to be joyful, a response to God s generosity and our own spiritual growth as a Christian. As the words of 2 Corinthians 9:7 tell us Each one must do as he has made up his mind, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver. AUTUMN LEAVES! GOD DOESN T!
