1 CALVARY LUTHERAN CHURCH 6817 ANTRIM ROAD EDINA, MN PHONE: OFFICE CLOSED ON MONDAYS Tuesday-Friday: to 3:00 p.m. Welcome! Worship! Witness! MAY 2018 PASTOR S PAGE by Pastor Scott Searl, Senior Pastor, Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church THANK YOU!! What a wonderful morning! I am so grateful to have had the opportunity to join you all in worship on April 22 nd. WEBSITE: calvaryedina@calvaryedina.org BLOG: washeisstdas.blogspot.com CHILDREN, YOUTH & FAMILY MINISTRY: Rebekah Moir rmoir@calvaryedina.org DIRECTOR OF MUSIC: Daryl Erickson derickson@calvaryedina.org ORGANIST: Cynthia Betz crbetz1@gmail.com A wonderful day of celebration of so many things: A celebration of a sense of mission and hope. A celebration of the ministry of Calvary. A celebration of the ministry of Pastor Jerry. A celebration of the hopeful future that God has in store of us! There was such a good and Holy Spirit present in your singing, in your greetings, in your generous gifts to Jerry and myself I am more excited about our partnership and future together than I have ever been And I ve been pretty excited! So, thank you for a warm welcome and joyful worship! As a quick update on our active partnership, our staff members have begun to dream and collaborate. Pastor Joanna, Brian Henning (SOTH Elementary Coordinator) and Rebekah (of Calvary fame) have begun to work together on a co-written curriculum for confirmation next year! To watch them and hear them in action as they began to workshop their first drafts was great. Much energy in the room! In addition Kaye Wothe, our Faith Community Nurse, has also had a few interactions and meetings with a few folks from Calvary who could use a little extra prayerful help. I am grateful for these the first signs of our partnership tangibly in action. I m sure there will be more to come. I look forward being with you again in worship soon. We will continue to hold our families of faith in our prayers in worship and in our daily work. There is much to do and many good things that God has in store for us. I am grateful for you, and grateful to be in ministry with you all! 3 MAY 2018 NEWSLETTER page 3 LOVE TO TELL THE STORY. Sanctuary Stained Glass The first name of our church was Calvary Evangelical Lutheran Church of Cahill. Today, we call ourselves Calvary Lutheran Church and are members of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of America (ELCA). So...What is this e word: Evangelical? Excerpted from The e word by Robert C. Blezard in Living Lutheran, April The term Evangelical fits because it speaks to the core of Lutheran identity. Evangelical comes from the Greek word, euangelion, meaning simply good news or gospel. Luther s key insight that the good news of Jesus is that we are loved by God and saved by God s grace through faith, not by the good things that we do challenged centuries of Roman Catholic teaching that people had to earn their salvation by being good enough in God s eyes. This good news caused a complete shift...that God loves us no matter what and we give thanks by striving to do what is right and good. As Luther s message spread across northern Europe, the believers of the good news were known as Evangelicals because of their orientation toward the gospel, as opposed to the law. When 18th century immigrants founded the first Lutheran Church in North America, they continued the tradition with the name: Evangelical Lutheran Ministerium of Pennsylvania. Today, the pronunciation varies from the dominant ee-vangelical, with the hard e sound to the other soft e with eh-vangelical. In 1987, with the merging of three Lutheran bodies into the ELCA, Bishop Herb Chilstrom ( ) adopted the soft e pronounciation in the name of the ELCA. Our current presiding bishop, Elizabeth Eaton, prefers the hard e and encourages ELCA Lutherans to proudly reclaim evangelical as we walk in faith with all evangelicals since Luther first shared the good news. So what does evangelical mean to you? We each have our story.. We each have our journey. Looking for your favorite poem, Bible verse, music, song or picture. Do you have a memory or a mentor that made a difference to your faith and life? This space is yours! Please share your story. See Susan Burman in the Church Office or send it to sburman@calvaryedina.org. 6 MAY 2018 NEWSLETTER page 6 UPDATE FROM THE PRESIDENT Springtime in Bloom by Becky Rorke, President This is the time for awakening and transformation - spring flowers are popping out - God's world is springing forth from the winter hibernation. We, at Calvary, are doing the same. On April 22 nd, we were blessed with both Pastor Jerry Wahl and Pastor Scott Searl from Shepherd of the Hills. We had a "Godspeed and Farewell liturgy recognizing all the guidance and direction that Pastor Jerry Wahl provided us as a congregation, as well as a transition to the supporting ministry from Shepherd of the Hills with Pastor Searl. Following the joyous service, we had a delicious potluck dinner. Pastor Jerry provided all members with a Calvary Coffee mug. He even provided extra mugs for our new members! If you didn't receive a coffee mug, please stop by the office and Susan can provide you one. The Call Committee is progressing with interviews of potential candidates. We have had a great selection of candidates who are interested in Calvary's ministry. The candidates have identified a great potential, here at Calvary, and recognize the "readiness" of our congregation to transform and be revitalized. As we continue through the call process, plans have been put in motion for congregational pastoral support through Shepherd of the Hills, as well as a summer schedule for preaching on select Sundays. Although we don't know when we will have a new minister, plans for the Summer Worship schedule have been made, along with our summer ice cream social! Scott Searl, Senior Pastor of Shepherd of the Hills will be at Calvary, in the office, one day a week. He will continue to hold weekly staff meetings until a new pastor is present. In addition, Susan Burman, Calvary's Office Administrator, will be attending periodic staff meetings at Shepherd of the Hills, to make sure communication remains open between the two congregations. At Calvary, this is one of God's new gardens. We are just like the tulips and crocus, popping our buds out of the rich, deep soil; soon to be in bloom, spreading God's word and work in the world! Happy Spring! Becky Rorke ELCA Minneapolis Area Synod (MAS) Assembly Many thanks to Alethe Schlaefer and Gary Lehr! On May 4 & 5, they will represent Calvary Lutheran Church at the Assembly at the Lord of Life Lutheran Church in Ramsey. Among the many activities, they will elect the next presiding Bishop of the MAS. CONGRATULATIONS: EDINA ROBOTICS TEAM! The Edina Robotics Team qualified for both World Championships (April 23-29) and the MSHSL State Championship on May 19th. Alyson Purdy is the team s advisor and they meet at Calvary! Congratuations, Team 1816! Everyone at Calvary is invited to go to Mariucci Arena on Saturday, May 19th, to watch The Green Machine compete. Admission is free and it's fun for the whole family. Anyone wanting a tour of the "pit", where the students work on the robots, is welcome - any Green Machine student will be happy to show people round. The morning is "seeding matches" with the selection of the final alliances at noon. Elimination rounds are in the afternoon. See the article from the Edina SunCurrent posted on the bulletin board.
