2 SAINT OF THE WEEK Saint John of Avila s Story Born in the Castile region of Spain, John was sent at the age of 14 to the University of Salamanca to study law. He later moved to Alcala, where he studied philosophy and theology before his ordination as a diocesan priest. After John s parents died and left him as their sole heir to a considerable fortune, he distributed his money to the poor. In 1527, he traveled to Seville, hoping to become a missionary in Mexico. The archbishop of that city persuaded him to stay and spread the faith in Andalusia. During nine years of work there, he developed a reputation as an engaging preacher, a perceptive spiritual director, and a wise confessor. Because John was not afraid to denounce vice in high places, he was investigated by the Inquisition but was cleared in He later worked in Cordoba and then in Granada, where he organized the University of Baeza, the first of several colleges run by diocesan priests who dedicated themselves to teaching and giving spiritual direction to young people. He was friends with Saints Francis Borgia, Ignatius of Loyola, John of God, John of the Cross, Peter of Alcantara, and Teresa of Avila. John of Avila worked closely with members of the Society of Jesus and helped their growth within Spain and its colonies. John s mystical writings have been translated into several languages. He was beatified in 1894, canonized in 1970, and declared a doctor of the Church on October 7, REFLECTION Saint John of Avila knew that the lives of Christians can contradict the Good News of Jesus Christ for example thinking racism is OK implicitly encouraging Christians to live their faithhalfheartedly, and causing obstacles to non- Christians who might accept Baptism. In 16thcentury Spain, those who advocated reforming the Church were often suspected of heresy. Saint John of Avila held his ground and was eventually recognized as a very reliable teacher of the Christian faith. SUNDAY SOUNDBITE Many years ago I was reminiscing with a married couple who are close friends about how our relationship began. I recalled that they had invited me to dinner after Mass one Sunday at our parish. Their version: I had stopped to talk to them and said we ought to get together. Laughing over our contrasting memories, my friends and I decided to leave the origins of our friendship ambiguous. Who chose whom? Does it really matter? In today s Gospel, it does matter who s doing the choosing! At the Last Supper, Jesus shares some intimate sentiments with his disciples. I have called you friends, he insists, it was I who chose you. Those words which any one of us would welcome coming from someone famous, attractive or interesting come from the Word made Flesh, Godwith-us. In a few simple sentences Jesus confers on his followers a wondrous dignity. As friends of Jesus they are invited into an intimacy with God! That intimacy can be ours as well. In prayer we relate to God with the intimate friendship described by Jesus. We come to prayer with all the confidence that good friends bring to a relationship. God offers us the patient, supportive listening of an understanding friend. In the peace that flows from such prayer comes the fruitful response Jesus asks of us in today s Gospel. ~ Father Greg Friedman OUR LADY OF LA VANG - VIETNAMESE MARIAN DAY CELEBRATION Mother s Day: Sunday, May 13, 2018 Our Lady of LaVang Catholic Church 2020 Gibbs Shoals Road, Greer, SC :00 a.m. 4:00 p.m. Procession, Celebration of the Eucharist, Luncheon and Social. As good stewards of God's gifts, how are we to love? By doing and giving in service to others. Go and bear fruit. Give and serve. It's who we are. I have never had the opportunity to be on the receiving end of a ministry at St. Anthony s until I had the flu and was hospitalized with pneumonia and Dan and our son all had the flu at the same time. Having a family of 6 at home to feed, the Meal Ministry came to our rescue and fed our family when I knew I could not prepare meals. Thank you so much and know you made a huge positive impact on our family. ~Kathy Brazinski SAINT ANTHONY SCHOOL MAY CROWNING Saint Anthony of Padua Catholic School will crown Mary on Thursday, May 10, directly following the 12pm Mass.
