1 Peralta Memorial United Methodist Church 25 Wesley Rd -- Peralta, NM Telephone: Office hours: Monday-Thursday, 8:30 am-3:00 pm Website: Church We Serve Christ So All Will Follow Him THE POWER OF QUIET WITNESS BEHIND THE SCENES When Melissa and I were in seminary in North Carolina, I could not resist the opportunity to visit some NASCAR race team shops. We were only a few hours away from the headquarters of most of the major teams. Melissa came along and we visited Hendrick Motorsports and Joe Gibbs Racing. When we went inside there were rows of stock cars, all painted the same, lined up in the shops. Each car is adjusted differently to race on a particular kind of track. Behind every race car are dozens of people -- mechanics, painters, engine builders, pit crews, tire experts, transportation crews, statisticians -- you get the idea. It takes a tremendous effort to put a race car on the track for just a few hours. I could have spent hours there watching and marveling at all the behind the scenes work. There is no way a driver could have a competitive car without the expertise and diligence of the people on the team. In our church there are so many people who work diligently behind the scenes and provide a quiet witness of God s love to the world. Without you, the work of Peralta Memorial UMC would not be possible. This article is a word of thanks and gratitude to you, as behind-the-scenes folks often do not get the recognition they deserve. One very quiet and important witness is Threads of Love. The women in Threads of Love make and pray over quilted baby blankets that are given to babies in hospitals and anywhere a newborn needs some extra love. This is a very simple yet profound act of God s love, and it makes a difference in the Kingdom of God here on earth. When we proclaim to the world that every baby matters to God we have moved toward God s redemption of our world. I also want to lift up the people who help with funeral lunches and receptions. Their quiet work is a witness to the family and friends of those who pass away that the life of their loved one is important to God. Through the care, preparation, and hospitality of the reception helpers, family and friends who have just suffered a loss have an opportunity to visit together, share memories, and enjoy a meal. This, too, is a redemptive act of compassion and healing, as funeral receptions and meals quietly proclaim that the person who died is a child of God. Another group of people who proclaim the redemptive work of God s kingdom is the order-keepers. These are the people who maintain the records of the church and handle necessary documentation to tell the church s story. These include our financial helpers, our historian, our administrative assistant, and others who keep records of what has happened here. Such records are necessary for accountability and to tell our story. God is working here! There are so many behind-the-scenes helpers offering testimony to God s work. In this article I have named just a few. Thank you to everyone who bears witness to the work of God quietly. Your work is vital to the Kingdom of God here in Peralta. Pastor David

4 AfterShock Turning the hearts of youth and families to God and each other LIGHT NIGHT continues to be a wonderful spiritual, and one on one quiet time with God. Light Night is the 3 rd Sunday of every month in the Sanctuary from 6:30 to 8 pm. You are always welcome to come at 6 and enjoy a meal with the youth in the Conference room before we go to the Sanctuary. Kate Johns leads us in some contemplative meditation and then we retreat to a quiet spot as we listen to inspirational music, pick up some spirit filled Agape gifts at the altar rail, and spend time reading scripture, journaling, praying and just feeling God s presence while getting to know Him and ourselves better. We always are in need of agape gifts, books, pamphlets, tracts, study materials and/or bibles, letters or words of encouragement that someone may pick up at the rail and be encouraged from. Light Night is for EVERYONE, this is not only for the youth. Please come join us and be inspired as you witness the work of the Lord and feel the peace of communing with the Holy Spirit. *There will not be a Light Night on holidays such as Father s Day. YOUTH ORIENTATION CLASS is quickly approaching -- June 19 through the 23 rd. If you are a youth helper or have a youth 6 th grade through 12 th grade that is planning on helping with this year, they must attend a Youth Orientation class that will be held during Sunday School time, 9:45 to 10:30, on June 18 in the Youth Chapel room 203 upstairs in the Community Building. MISSION TRIP TO CIMARRON The week following here at PMUMC, the Aftershock youth will be travelling to Cimarron NM and staying the week at the Cimarron UM Church to host for the community. Aftershock youth will do the leading for the children there and it is always a wonderful experience. Please pray for us as we seek to bring God s love into this community. We are taking about 21 youth and adult sponsors this year. Plus, there s something new!! We will be busing children from Maxwell NM to and from every day. This is about a 27-mile trip one way. If your youth would like to go with us, please let Marlow know of your interest and pick up a permission and packing slip so we know who will be going this year. Praise God for all He works through the youth of our community.

6 Mary Circle-UMW meets on the second Tuesday of each month, which will be June 13 at 9:30 AM in Fellowship Hall. Kaye Groves will present an original program, "Lydia-Then and Now;" and I happen to know that Barbara Springer plans on bringing Nachos for us to sample before she makes them for snacks at our showing of Moses. Doesn't this sound like a great meeting? Please come! Update from a past UMW meeting: "After hearing Dodie Hawkins, the members of our Mary Circle want to call to your attention our duty to care for God's earth. We encourage you to conserve energy, recycle, and quit using Styrofoam products. We encourage this policy for home and here at church as much as possible." We welcome you to participate in any of our activities and/or come to any meeting that interests you. Women, we also welcome your comments on how we can better program to meet YOUR needs and attract you to UMW. If you can't meet during the week and would like meet at another time, let us know. Mission u will be held July at Sacramento. Registrations are due by July 3. Contact Chris Knox for more information or registration forms. We do have two members who plan on attending but you don't have to a member to attend. Whether you are a member of UMW/Mary Circle or not, here are two areas of service that may be of interest to you --- (1) helping to prepare luncheons/receptions following funeral or memorial services. If you re interested or want more information, you may contact Chris Knox at or Jennifer York, ; and (2) Barnabas Writing Ministry which Kaye Groves is facilitating and has been very well received! Kaye sends out names to Barnabas partners, and then we send get well, sympathy or encouragement cards to those individuals. If you are interested in being a part of this, call Kaye at Notice the ad in this bulletin about the showing of Moses. Mark your calendar now for Sunday, June 25 at 1:00 PM. Remember that the movie is free, but profits from the snacks that are available during the intermission will be used by UMW to promote mission work locally and worldwide. We are hoping for a good attendance, so invite your friends and neighbors! Even if you don't belong to Mary Circle, we welcome your help especially on Sunday, June 25, to set up and take down. For more information about Mary Circle/UMW call Chris Knox at or the church office. JUNE 14 TH JUNE 18 TH

8 Abide with Me-1847 If you abide in Me, and My words abide in you, you will ask what you desire, and it shall be done for you. John 15:7 Henry Francis Lyte, vicar (an incumbent of a parish where tithes formerly passed to a chapter or religious house or layman) in the fishing village of Lower Brixham, Devonshire, England, ministered faithfully for 23 years to his seafaring people. Though a humble couple, he and his wife, Anne, lived in an elegant estate, Berry Head. It had reportedly been provided by King William IV, who had been impressed with Henry s ministry. At water s edge, its coastal views were among the most beautiful on the British Isles. Henry laid out walking trails through the estate s 41 acres and enjoyed the tranquility of the house and grounds. There he wrote most of his sermons, poems and hymns. But Henry s lung condition hung over the home like a blackening cloud. Lower Brixham suffered damp winters, and while in his early fifties, Henry realized his lung disorder had deteriorated into tuberculosis. On September 4, 1847, age 54, he entered his pulpit with difficulty and preached what was to be his last sermon. He had planned a therapeutic holiday in Italy. I must put everything in order before I leave, he said, "because I have no idea how long I will be away. That afternoon he walked along the coast in pensive prayer, then retired to his room, emerging an hour later with a written copy of Abide with Me. Some accounts indicate he wrote the poem during that hour; others say that he discovered it in the bottom of his desk as he packed for his trip to Italy, and that it had been written a quarter century earlier. Probably both stories are true. It is likely that, finding sketches of a poem he had previously started, he prayerfully revised and completed it that evening. Shortly afterward, Henry embraced his family a final time and departed for Italy. Stopping in Avignon, France, he again revised Abide with Me it was evidently much on his mind and posted it to his wife. Arriving on the French Riviera, he checked into the Hotel de Angleterre in Nice, and there, on November 20, 1847, his phthisic lungs finally gave out. Another English clergyman, a Rev. Manning of Chichester, who happened to be staying in the same hotel, attended him during his final hours. Henry s last words were, Peace! Joy! When news of his death reached Brixham, the fishermen of the village asked Henry s son-in-law, also a minister, to hold a memorial service. It was on this occasion that Abide with Me was first sung.
