1 2017 Grace Lutheran Church Newsletter Grace and peace to you, my siblings in Christ! Amen! As many of you know, this year, Lutherans around the world are celebrating 500 years of reformation. On October 31st, 1517, Martin Luther posted his Ninety-Five Theses on the door of the church in Wittenberg, Germany, which led to a debate about the theology and teachings of the Catholic church at the time, and eventually the reformation itself. At the heart of Luther s concerns was the fierce conviction that God s grace is a free gift for all; and that every person, from priest to ordinary believer, was a beloved child of God, and needed no human mediator for their faith, for their relationship to their loving Creator. Much of Martin Luther s work focused on opening up the Good News to everyday Christians.

2 This work included translating the Bible into German - something that had never been done before - so that ordinary believers could hear the scriptures in their own language. He also preached and led much of the worship service in German for the same reasons. Before Luther, both the Bible and the worship services were in Latin, a language almost no everyday believer could speak. Luther loved music, which he called the language of the heart, and wrote many new hymns - again, to bring good news to people s hearts. Finally, Luther wrote his Large and Small Catechisms, meant to be teaching resources for pastors - and for parents. The Large Catechism is that - it is quite large. Luther created it as a tool for pastors, especially those who lived far from theological schools where they could engage regularly in what today we would call continuing education. But again, Luther felt so keenly the importance of each believer having ownership over their own faith, that he wrote his Small Catechism. This resource was meant not for pastors, but for parents. It was a daily guide for them to help them teach their children, and together grow in faith. If I could share a brief story: One of my most treasured memories of my Grandpa Mischke comes from the Autumn before he died. I was in my first semester at seminary, and Pat and I were visiting my grandparents farm. Grandma was asking me what I was studying this first semester, and I shared that in one of my classes we were studying the Small Catechism (as part of a wider look at Luther s teaching and theology.) I explained that we were required to memorize Luther s Small Catechism explanations of the three parts of the Apostle s Creed. I had studied the Small Catechism during my Confirmation years, but never memorized the Apostle s Creed portions. And so I began to recite for them the first article - what I had memorized so far. I began the words, and suddenly, my grandpa joined me. Up until that point, I wasn t sure how much of the conversation Grandpa was picking up. He was 90 that year, and time had taken away most of his strength, eyesight, and hearing. However, his mind was sharp as always, and he had an inexhaustible memory, which he now was showing us.

3 I hadn t known for sure if my grandpa could hear me, but as I began my recitation, he joined me, and finished the whole thing with me. He then chuckled and said, I haven t done that since I was 12. In the next few months, Grandpa s health declined quickly, and he died that January, days after my birthday. Grandpa never got to hear me preach, or see me preside over Holy Communion - but I ve never doubted how proud he is of me. The moment we shared that day is one I hold dear, and one I think of often as a pastor now. I think of the power of the words we take into our hearts, and how this simple theology has been strengthening and uplifting Christians for centuries. I think of the gift Martin Luther gave to us all, his passion for the freedom of faith for every Christian, and how important that still is today in the church. Starting mid-june, we will begin a seven-week sermon series diving into the key pieces of Luther s Small Catechism. Our seven weeks will focus on the 10 Commandments, the Apostle s Creed, the Lord s Prayer, Baptism, and the Lord s Supper. Many of you who grew up in a Lutheran church or attended Lutheran Confirmation classes may have studied or memorized parts or all of the Small Catechism - like my Grandpa Mischke. You may remember it well, or only bits and pieces. On the other hand, you may never have opened the Small Catechism in your life! Together, as we celebrate the movement Luther began 500 years ago, we will explore his teachings and the heart of faith found therein. Martin Luther said, The Bible is the cradle wherein Christ is laid. Jesus is at the heart of the scriptures; Jesus is at the heart of Martin Luther s teachings; Jesus is at the heart of the church s reformation. As we celebrate this year 500 years of reformation, we remember that the church is in the midst of reformation every day, as the Holy Spirit draws us further into the mission of God in the world, and transforms us daily into the Body of Christ. May these weeks studying Luther s teaching inspire us with deeper and bolder faith, that we might continue the good work of reformation for the sake of the church of Christ, and of the world God loves. Amen! Small Catechism Sermon Series June Commandments, Part 1 June Commandments, Part 2 July 2 - Creed, Part 1 July 9 - Creed, Part 2 July 16 - Lord's Prayer July 23 - Baptism July 30 - Lord's Supper

Kathy Kearns and Heidi Mann have agreed to take on this temporary part-time role. During these weeks, we will be exploring the needs of our office. As our congregation continues to grow and our ministry opportunities continue to shift and expand, we are looking to take a proactive step to discern what our specific needs will be for our office going forward. We hope to assess the day-to-day needs of the office, as well as explore the office s specific role in the church s overarching ministries and mission. Heidi and Kathy will use their time to help research and maintain the day-to-day needs, while Candy will be exploring the office s expanding ministry, in addition to her current duties in managing the office. If you have any questions about this, please contact Pr. Katie or a council member. And a special thank you to Kathy and Heidi for their willingness to take on this role!

8 Global Barnyard Project: So were you wondering why the little red barns were not handed out during Lent? This project was turned over to the Social Outreach Committee and we decided to do something a little different this year. The purchase of a goat or some chickens for a family is a wonderful project. But we decided to go a little bigger this year. We are aiming to purchase a whole FAMILY FARM. Yes through the ELCA Good Gifts, we can purchase a whole Family Farm. Including: [1] Cow, [2] Goats, [10] Chickens, [2] Pigs, [1] Duck, Farming tools, with training and marketing support. This can help a family farm its way to a fresh start and escape the cycle of hunger and poverty for good. We will be promoting this project from Memorial Day through Labor Day. A chart will be posted for everyone to see our progress. If you have any questions you can contact anyone on the Social Outreach committee. Weekly Bible Study about the following Sunday's readings will be held in the living room on Wednesdays from 3-4:30 pm. Bring your Bibles, try to complete the readings and think about how they may relate to you, today s world, etc. The readings are located in the Sunday bulletin. Attend whenever you are able. Contact Bob Jalonen at with questions. Building Security: Thank you to everyone for their increased efforts to keep our church locked and safe. Just a reminder to check the outside door by the elevator before you leave. Also, please make sure that the church office door is always locked behind you. Keep up the great work!

9 Knitters & Crocheters: The Big Ships are starting to move in Duluth. This means the crews will be coming and the Twin Ports Ministry to Seafarers will be in much need of caps for these folks [remember there are female crew members too]. So if you want to take a break from Prayers Shawls and take on a smaller project or use up some of your smaller balls of yarn. Whip up a few caps for this ministry. We will gather them and send them off sometime this summer. Thanks for all your 'Happy & busy fingers". A Word of Thanks: Thank you very much for allowing us to use the Fellowship Hall for Logan s graduation party. We greatly appreiate it. And thanks to all who were able to join us for the celebration. Greg & Heidi Mann Need a Donations List? Anyone wanting a quarterly or annual Giving Statement, can submit their current address to Candy in the church office. Don t have ? Our Accounting Manager, Jackie, is happy to print a statement for you and have it available for pick up in the office the next business day. Need Greeting Cards? 13 A Prayer for Father s Day, and for all those who wrestle with this day Holy God, whom we call Father, we give you thanks for the people who have been our earthly fathers in this life, and we pray for all sorts and conditions of fathers. For fathers who have striven to balance the demands of work, marriage, and children with an honest awareness of both joy and sacrifice. For fathers who, lacking a good model, have worked to become a good father. For fathers who by their own account were not always there for their children, but who continue to offer those children, now grown, their love and support. For those whose relationships with their fathers have brought them grief, sorrow, or pain. For fathers who have been wounded by the neglect and hostility of their children. For single fathers and fathers who have gone through divorce. For fathers whose children are adopted, and whose love and support has offered healing. For fathers who, as stepfathers, freely choose the obligation of fatherhood and earned their stepchildren's love and respect. For fathers who have lost a child, and grieve especially on this day. For men who have no children, but long to hold their own babe in their arms. For men who have no children, but cherish the next generation as if they were their own. For those men who have "fathered" us in their role as mentors and guides. For those men who are about to become fathers; may they openly delight in their children. And for those fathers who have died, but live on in our memory and in the communion of your Saints, whose love continues to nurture us. All this we ask in the name of your beloved Son, who is both father and mother to us all. Amen. Found and adapted from the version posted on re: worship blog

A family emergency required Amy Soderberg to leave. Under Roberts Rules of Order the Secretary Dolores Delaney was to lead but deferred to Curt Vandeen in order to continue with her minutes. Old Business Mission Plan Team: The Mission planning team met on May 7 th after worship and agreed to arrange a time to meet with Rev. Amy Odgren, Assistant to the Bishop and Director of Evangelical Mission out of the NE Mn. Synod office to further discuss the plans and goals of the mission planning team. Pastor would like more people added to the team and ideally a diverse group of gender and ages. Internet Update: The installation is completed. It is working better and faster for the office and Pastor Katie s home. Council will revisit at our August meeting changing from a one year plan to a two year plan at a lower rate. Amy will add this to our August agenda.

17 Constitution Committee: Amy requested two council volunteers to assist her in updating our Constitution. Curt Vandeen and Dolores Delaney will work with Amy to complete the task. Curt Vandeen will be speaking with James to address these concerns. Council Conversations: Dolores Delaney: Arlene Today complimented the choir and pointed out that many members prefer the choir remaining in their pews rather than in the sanctuary. Remaining in the pews is felt to be more a part of the service rather than the latter being more of a performance. This will be brought to the Music and Worship committee. Christian Education: Joe Owens and Pat Merfeld met with the Christian Ed group to express our support and to give more assistance going forward to provide greater assets for the children. The need for nursery personnel with CPR certification and current background checks hired as soon as possible.
