5 INTEREST SESSIONS Serving the Lord in Gary, Indiana Rev. Delwyn Campbell As the Strategic Missionary Developer for Gary, Indiana, Rev. Campbell leads the development of missionary outreach and supports the health and growth of the current Lutheran population in the area. This includes assisting in the establishment of a Lutheran educational facility. He will share details about his ministry and tell us how we can partner with him. Japan Short Term Mission Trip Rebecca Masters and Dawn Kirk Growing in relational ministry to serve God in your community and in short term trips all over the world. We will share how God directed and provided abundantly for the ministry He cultivated in Michigan and continues to grow in Japan. The Hymnal in Your Home Dr. Jon Eifert We think of the hymnal as the book found in the church, which contains some favorite hymns and a church year s worth of singing. But our hymnal is much more than that. Come and discover how many and varied are the resources we find within the Lutheran Service Book, and explore some of the ways in which it can be used to enrich your home devotional life as well. Chapel of the Resurrection Windows Rev. Joseph Cunningham The chancel of the Chapel of the Resurrection is 98 feet high and is circular in shape with a roof shaped like a nine-point star. The nave is 58 feet high and 193 feet long. Rev. Cunningham will explain the symbolism of the windows in the chancel area. K-9 Ministries Tim Hetzner Tim Hetzner, President/CEO of Lutheran Church Charities, along with LCC staff, will share how Lutheran Church Charities and the LCC K-9 Ministries embrace the unique, calming nature and skills of purebred Golden Retrievers to interact with people of all ages and circumstance. LCC works through congregations to help individuals and families by sharing the Mercy, Compassion, Presence and Proclamation of Jesus Christ to those suffering and in need. Servant Events Chances are several Servant Events will not be completed in the 4-hour Friday afternoon time slot. A shorter Servant Events session Saturday is a second opportunity for anyone whose hands still want to be busy cutting stamps, making blankets, coloring Cards of Hope, etc., or for those unable to participate Friday. Serving Re-Imagined: Helping the Least of These Rev. John Albers Pastor Albers will use his lifetime of experience to help re-imagine what it means to help those whom Jesus referred to as the "least of these." From individuals experiencing homelessness, to school children in Gary (Indiana), to our neighbors in need... these are those who are waiting to receive the love and care of God's people in Christ. Rev. John Albers serves as the Executive Director of the Lutheran School Corporation of Indiana and Administrator of Ascension Lutheran Christian School, Gary, Indiana. What Do Jewish People Think of Jesus? Rev. Dr. Robert Roegner and Kristi Rev. Roegner, and his wife, Kristi, the first missionaries to serve in Israel for The Apple of His Eye Mission Society, a Recognized Service Organization of The Lutheran Church--Missouri Synod, will share challenges and rewards of reaching out to Jewish people with the Good News that the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob is the same God Who sent His Son to be our Savior, the Messiah! Hymnody, History, and Lessons for Us Dr. Jon Eifert To appreciate a hymn, it is not necessary to know everything about its background. However, an awareness of the history of hymnody--and how theological challenges and practical trends have influenced the church and its hymns--can lead you to a greater appreciation of the wonderful blessing that we have in our hymnal. Come, sing some great hymns, and learn about the Church's song through the centuries. 5

6 INTEREST SESSIONS (CONTINUED) Global Missions in Your Neighborhood Jessica Burkman Come hear Compass International Family Center's Executive Director, Jessica Burkman, share about their ministry, and how you can serve immigrants and refugees in your own community. You'll have an opportunity to hear personal testimonies of the challenges international newcomers typically face, and ask questions to better understand this special group of neighbors in need of compassionate care and Christ's love. Come with Me to a Quiet Place Lisa Lessing The Christian life for women has become a hurried and busy one. We have joined in with a culture that swiftly runs toward back-to-back activities. Social media threatens to distract and draw us away from relationships. Noise abounds! Jesus invites us to Come with me by yourselves to a quiet place and get some rest. (Mark 6:31) What a relief for our bodies and souls! From frenetic running to taking a slow walk with Jesus, our faith is strengthened and nurtured, preparing us to love people well! Agnus Day, The Lectionary Comic Rev. Jim Wetzstein Each week Rev. Wetzstein, a pastor at Valparaiso University, creates a comic strip based on the assigned readings from the common lectionary. The conversations between the sheep, Rick and Ted, drive home a point. SERVANT EVENTS You have several opportunities to serve our Lord with your time... Please note that participants will again sign up for a specific time period rather than for a specific event. Phil s Friends is a nationwide network providing hope and support to those affected by cancer. Among their many services, Phil s Friends sends Care Packages filled with practical, comforting, and entertaining gifts. Their Cards of Hope program currently mails 14,000 encouraging cards to patients each week. We will hand decorate Care Package boxes, make child-sized fleece blankets for the Care Packages, and color Cards of Hope. Valparaiso University Welcome Bags will be assembled for students attending a campus Bible Study that meets twice each month. The bags demonstrate goodwill and help students recognize LWML. We will fill 60 bags with snacks, school supplies and devotions, plus a cross, made from used greeting cards and personalized with a Bible verse. Bring used greeting cards and scissors. Trimming and Sorting Stamps to be sold for additional mission funds is a time-honored favorite, a relaxing way to make a difference and visit with friends! Bring your scissors and any stamps you ve saved. Prayer Warriors The Christian Life committee invites you to sign up to be a Prayer Warrior during the convention. As a Prayer Warrior, you will choose one or more of the five times available to gather in the Living Water prayer chapel and pray for specific requests received, as well as more general needs in the church and world. You may sign up during the Servant Events on Friday, and instructions will be given at that time. INGATHERINGS You have several opportunities to serve our Lord with your donations... Lydia House, Gary (Gary Zone) provides temporary housing and spiritual support for women battling drug addiction, alcoholism and homelessness. Please bring personal care items for women. Swaddling Clothes, Dyer (Hammond Zone) shares the mercy of Christ with their neighbors through gifts of clothing, food, friendship and the forgiving Word of God. They accept new and gently used baby and toddler items clothing up to 3T, diapers through size 5/6, and diapering supplies and bottles. Immanuel Lutheran Church Food Pantry, Valparaiso (Valparaiso Zone) serves with Christian love by giving food items free of charge to those in need. Requested items are non-perishable canned or boxed food, smaller boxes of cereal, canned meat; no paper products. 6

7 INDIANA DISTRICT CONVENTION BANNER CALL 2018 The LWML Indiana District Convention will be held June 29 July 1, in Valparaiso, IN. Each zone is asked to create a banner for the convention. The theme is: Walk in the Light of the Lord based on Isaiah 2:5b,... let us walk in the light of the Lord. Our convention hymn is: 411, I Want to Walk as a Child of the Light. If your zone plans to have a banner at convention, please notify Cathie Wakeland, Vice President-Conventions and Communication, before May 30. Banner guidelines are as follows: 1. Finished banner should be 3 x Base your banner on the theme of the convention. Do NOT use the convention logo. 3. Be creative in materials, color, and design (these are zone expenses). 4. Your zone name should be in the banner or on the front of the banner. Do Not abbreviate your zone name. Please make certain your name is attached to your banner on the back side using a 4 x 6 ID. (You are responsible for your zone banner property.) 5. Please attach either two ribbons or Velcro fasteners to the banner prior to convention. Place one fastener at the top and one at the bottom; each centered inches from the edge of the back of the banner. The ties should be long enough to tie a bow around a 2-3 pole or fasten it using the Velcro tabs. This will help hold the banner to the pole and lessen the swinging of the banner when carried. 6. If you are using a dowel rod at the bottom of the banner, please tack it to prevent the rod from slipping out. 7. There will be poles provided for carrying and displaying the banner at convention. 8. Please attach the banner to a 1-2 dowel with a screw eye on each end of the dowel. Note: as an aid to hanging the banner on the pole, make a small loop in the middle of the cord. Secure the cording through each screw eye. Please use a strong quarter inch or 8mm cord. Make certain it is long enough. It can be shortened. Be certain to attach the cord tightly because the cord will stretch with the weight when the banner is hung. (I encourage you to hang your banner for a few days before bringing it to convention, to adjust for any stretching.) 9. Heavy fabrics or bulky type materials are discouraged because the banner should be easy to handle when carrying. Use your creativity and fellowship in designing and making the banner. 10. Do not forget to let me know by May 30 if you will have a zone banner for the 2016 convention. We would like to have a banner from each of the 21 zones. Blessing to all and let those creative juices flow! CONVENTION LUNCHEONS Be a Light - Christian Life Committee We will present ideas for how to be a light in today s world.
