2 ST. PIUS V CHURCH Dear parishioners, As a young woman, Simone Weil was a promising student. Born of Jewish parents in France in the early 20 th century, she went on to become among the first female graduates of a leading French university. Weil eventually left her native country for the United States following the Nazi invasion. She joined the French resistance and died in England in 1943 at the age of 34. In spite of the shortness of her life, Weil was a prolific writer on social and political affairs. Her works were published widely in French magazines and journals. Weil s lasting legacy however, is that of a modern spiritual writer. One of her more significant contributions is a 1942 essay Weil wrote to a Dominican priest, Father Joseph-Marie Perrin. Fr. Perrin asked her for help in explaining prayer to a group of young Catholic school students to whom he ministered. The priest believed that Weil, an accomplished student turned teacher, could relate the topic well to the audience. In her essay, Weil connects prayer with study by pointing out that attention is an essential characteristic for doing both well. Just as attention is necessary to receiving what one is being taught, attention in prayer is necessary for communicating with God. Weil explains that if one wants to learn how to pray, he or she must first learn to pay attention. It is only when we stop living as though going through the motions that we can begin to orient ourselves to God. Weil s essay forms part of a collection of her writings organized by Fr. Perrin after her death and published under the title Waiting for God. In a very practical way, the essay echoes Jesus s teaching to stop babbling in prayer (Matt 6:7-9). By paying attention, Weil might add, the babbling will cease. The Gospel this weekend encourages us to pray without ceasing. Weil defined prayer as the orientation of all the attention of which the soul is capable toward God. An active incorporation of Weil s notion of prayer would seem to satisfy the Gospel s exhortation toward unceasing prayer. One way to orient our attention toward God is by measuring the value of all of our actions by whether they bring us closer to being fit to live in heaven. Those that do, we should pursue. Those that do not, we should either change the manner in which we are doing them or drop them altogether. When we are not sure, we should ask God for guidance. Examining the place of God in daily life is becoming particularly foreign to our youth. Two weeks ago I wrote about recent studies showing that Catholics are abandoning the faith at younger and younger ages. This diocese too, has noted recently that many younger Catholics rarely return to church following their receipt of the sacrament of confirmation. At the close of this Gospel, Jesus asks when the Son of Man comes, will he find faith on earth? This is a question that all of us, but especially those who are parents of children young and old, are being invited to answer. May we pray without ceasing, so as to keep the faith alive in those we leave behind. Wishing you all the blessings that I can give, Fr. Thomas More Garrett, op PROVIDENCE, RHODE ISLAND Eucharistic Adoration Eucharistic Adoration is held on Thursdays, immediately following the noon Mass until 8:00 p.m. Adoration ends with a Holy Hour from 7:00 to 8:00 p.m. that includes the Sacrament of Reconciliation and Benediction.
