2 ST. PIUS V CHURCH Dear parishioners, I am a sinful man. With these words, Simon Peter introduces himself to Jesus. After miraculously pulling enough fish from the sea to almost sink the boat on which they were standing, Simon Peter tells Jesus to depart from him on account of his sinful disposition. He considers himself unworthy to be a disciple. Simon Peter is right; later events would serve to support the accuracy of his self-description. He practically warned Jesus at their first meeting that he would not only abandon him, but that he would deny even knowing him. Yet Jesus was not deterred from his pursuit of the man who would still later become the leader of the apostles. Pope Francis probably had today s Gospel in mind, when during an interview early in his papacy, he responded to the question Who is Jorge Bergoglio? with the response: I am a sinner. Like the man he succeeds, Francis knows failure and imperfection. At the same time though, Peter is a model not just for Pope Francis, but for us all. Consider a comparison of Peter and another disciple, Judas. Both betrayed Christ. One repents; the other falls into despair. Peter never ceased to trust in God s mercy, and that made all the difference. Repentance is crucial to accessing that mercy. With Ash Wednesday only a few days away, this coming week marks the beginning of Lent. Lent is a special time for repentance, especially in this Year of Mercy. As you consider which Lenten practices to adopt this season, give some thought as to those activities of yours that are keeping you from developing into the citizen of heaven that you are meant to become (Philippians 3:20). From what do you especially need to repent? Perhaps you might make addressing those things a personal theme for this Lenten phase of the Year of Mercy. Tailoring your Lenten practices accordingly is a good start to what will hopefully be a glorious finish. Wishing you all the blessings that I can give, Fr. Thomas More, interested adults are encouraged to meet in the church hall to discuss a particular topic. The theme for the coming week is as follows: February 9: Training to be Souls Fit for Heaven (Beatitudes, Virtues & Gifts) February 16: Doing Right by God & Family (Commandments 1-4)) February 23: Life is Worth Living (The Fifth Commandment) Each discussion group will meet on Tuesday evenings from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m. There is no obligation to register. You are welcome to come to all or only those that interest you most. PROVIDENCE, RHODE ISLAND Ash Wednesday We celebrate the beginning of the season of Lent by signing our foreheads with the ashes from burnt palm branches. Ashes will be given out at the following Masses on Wednesday, February 10, as follows: 7:00 a.m., 8:30 a.m. (School Mass), 12:00 Noon & 7:00 p.m. (NOTE: Eucharistic Adoration and Confessions have been changed to Thursdays.) ABSTINENCE: For those 14 and older, no meat is to be eaten on Ash Wednesday and all the Fridays of Lent. FASTING: On Ash Wednesday and Good Friday, those between the ages of 18 and 59 should eat less, meaning no solid food between meals and only one meal that day should be a full meal. Serious reasons (example one s health) can excuse one from this practice. Old Palms/New Life Old palms from last year are being collected. There is a box at the main entrance of the church for this purpose. 40-DAYS-FOR-LIFE LENTEN CAMPAIGN The Office of Life & Family Ministry will begin the Lenten campaign on Ash Wednesday, February 10, through Sunday, March 20. We are asking individuals to adopt an hour for a peaceful prayer vigil at Planned Parenthood, 111 Point St., Providence or the Women s Medical Clinic, 1725 Broad St., Cranston during this 40-day period. Please encourage women who are in a crisis or unplanned pregnancy to call us for confidential assistance. If you are interested in learning more about the campaign that calls for prayer, fasting, and community outreach, and the diocesan pregnancy outreach services, contact Carol Owens at x218. As part of our faith community s Lenten observance, we are participating in the Catholic Relief Services Lenten program Operation Rice Bowl. Since 1975, Operation Rice Bowl has inspired Catholics in the United States to pray, fast, learn, and give as we increase our understanding of our global community. We will connect this understanding with the principles of Catholic social teaching throughout our Lenten journey. 4 FEBRUARY 7, 2016 LUMEN GENTIUM ANNUAL AWARDS The Diocese of Providence is requesting nominations from parishes for the annual Lumen Gentium Award that is presented to those that have demonstrated outstanding service to the Church in ten specific categories.
