2 NUM-Key Notes from Debbie Mallory, NUMC Music Director It is two days after the Choir s presentation of In the Presence of Jehovah, and I am still soaring. As one of our songs proclaimed, Calvary s Love will sail forever, bright and shining, strong and free. We received many wonderful comments and reactions from those in attendance, and most felt as if they had been in the presence of Jehovah. That makes me so happy, because that is our ultimate goal. Yes, we want the singing to be NUMC s Heather Whyte named Wilmore Grade Teacher of Year Congratulations to Heather Whyte, a member of NUMC, who has been named Teacher of the Year at Wilmore Elementary School. beautiful and without flaws, but to hear people worshipped and felt the presence of God was powerful. Thank you for your participation and response. I would like to personally thank each and every person who participated. From the Choir regulars to the extras to the narrators, sound technician and video producer, those who helped with the set and anyone else I may have forgotten, Thank You. It was a team effort and could not have been done without each of you. May we all live in the presence of Jehovah, now and forever. Love, Debbie Mallory Nicholasville United Methodist Church 303 W. 3 MESSENGER UP. OVER. OUT. T H E A WORD FOR GOD S PEOPLE Pastor Mike Knock, knock. Who s there? Peter. Peter who? Read Acts 12:1-19 I had never seen the house so full of people before. It was a prayer meeting. And it was quite well attended. I could hardly make my way from one end of the house to the other as I tried to make sure all of our guests were served. And they were still coming! They were praying because one of the church leaders had been arrested and thrown in jail. His trial date was set for the next day, and it was not hard to guess what the verdict would be. Another of our leaders had been executed already, and it seemed very much like we would soon lose Peter, too. I prayed quietly as I served the others; Jesus, set him free. Let him get away somehow. S Some people in the room were weeping. They already were mourning what seemed for them to be the inevitable loss of Peter. It was as if they already had given up. But I had to believe God could still answer our prayers. A knock at the door distracted me from my prayer and reminded me of my household duties. As I headed for the door I thought to myself: Not more people! We can t possibly fit another... And then I heard the voice of the one who was knocking. It was Peter! I immediately turned and ran to tell the others. I was so excited Peter was at the door, I forgot to let him in! I could not wait to let the others know he was OK! UP But when I told them Peter was at the door, they said, Peter who? They just could not believe the Peter they had been praying for had actually been set free! They found the notion so utterly absurd they accused me of being crazy! Don t bother us with talk about miracles, we re busy praying! I do not mean to be cynical. I mean, who am I? Just a servant girl. But it seems to me that when we pray we should allow for the possibility God just might answer us. NUMC Seder Supper Photos / Pages 1 and 4 by JAY WARD MAY

4 GOOD TURNOUT IN HIS PRESENCE FOR SPECIAL EVENT Seder: See, smell, taste, feel and hear the Word The ancient Scriptures came alive at the Seder Supper on Holy Thursday, April 21, sponsored by the Nicholasville United Methodist Women. About 100 people attended as family gathered around the dinner table. In Scripture it is called the festival of unleavened bread. It is often called the Passover. It is the oldest continual human activity in our history. The actual festival lasts for seven or eight days. On the first or second day of Passover, there is a ceremonial dinner called the feast of unleavened bread or the Seder. It is the dinner that Christians now refer to as the Last Supper. It has been said Seder teaches us the obligation to express gratitude. The dinner was also a Bible study of sorts. For as the ancient scriptures were read and explained we learned the connection between what Christ did with His disciples and what we do today as we take Holy Communion. Almost every facet of this dinner exists in order to pass on important Bible stories and Biblical Truth using all five senses of the participants. We did not just hear the Word, we could see, smell, taste and feel the Word. We did not just inform our children, we involved and encouraged them as they discovered the Word of God. This was a dinner and a story. The story was about God keeping promises. It was a new way to encounter the very personal story of our redemption and salvation from Jesus. After the Seder and a meal we all took Holy Communion served to us by Jesus. There were children, youth, young adults, parents and grandparents all partaking Communion together. One individual said as everyone was leaving, I felt I was in His presence. We were indeed in the presence of Jehovah! Praise God for what great things He has done! 5 Wanted: Web, A-V, Facebook On the heels of the Easter Cantata, I find myself reflecting on the powerful impact sound and video displays can have on ministry. That is why I am looking for folks interested in working as a team to expand NUMC s use of audio-visual, web and social media. If some of these things do not make sense, do not worry... we can train! I am looking for the following: Web team s Make.jpgs for our rolling website screens s Assist in placing material on website s Monitor materials on website (Outdated? Appropriate?) s Assist in finding suitable graphics Audio-Visual team (Did you know you can get paid for outside events after NUMC training/certification?) s VIP team People who can shoot video, interview and take photographs s Vignettes Work with a team to storyboard and Program Director Bill Hogan produce video vignettes for use on Facebook, website, sermons or special occasions Facebook team s Our Social Media Dream Team s Figuring out the best way to reach out and use/maintain NUMC Facebook presence For those thinking this entire article has made no sense, don t worry! We will make sure everything we advertise and promote is available through other means. We will leave no one behind as we move forward into a more active digital presence. We are simply trying to make use of all means available to ensure the good news is reaching everyone possible! If you are interested in any of the above, or have other ideas that will promote the gospel and draw people to Christ, then Let s talk! Bill OVER Take heart... this is our Father s world Jesus said,... by trusting in me you will be unshakable and assured, deeply at peace. In this godless world you will continue to experience difficulties. But take heart! I have conquered the world. John 16:31-33 (The Message) Ah, Spring! Everything is green (!) and blooming (!). The dark days of Winter are past. We are reminded this is our Father s world. Although there are wars and rumors of wars, earthquakes, tornadoes, floods and other world problems, our Father is still in charge! So take heart. Our Savior has conquered the world! Wednesday nights in May (6:30 in C002), we will continue to focus on some of the Saints, Sinners and Scalawags featured in the Bible, including the likes of Job and Balaam, who is described in The Open Bible as a destroyer of the people, mentioned frequently in the Book of Numbers and eventually killed by the sword because of his sin. Blessings! ~ Sandy Higgs, LifeShare Groups MAY

7 Praise God and share his grace with others Praising God for what we have received is one of the purposes of personal prayer. Over the past several years, I have watched Nicholasville UMC grow, especially after the Community Center opened and another worship service started at 9:30 a.m. Praise God for the Community Center. Pastor Mike preached a series recently about the Community Center. Does God want us to have it or do we want it irrespective of what God wants? The answer is God wants it because we have filled it, with God s help, with ministries that reach up to God, reach over to others in our church and reach out to the community. Praise God for the good shepherd he has provided us in Pastor Mike. We tend to think of pastors in churches of over 150 people as having it easy compared to the pastor who has three smaller churches for which he is responsible. Have you looked at what Pastor Mike does? Essentially, he has a three-point charge collocated on one campus. Coat and tie at 8:15-9:10 a.m., casual attire at 9:25-10:35 and back to coat and tie at 10:50-12:10. In addition, if you have been to two or more of those services, you know that an original sermon is delivered in each service yes, the three are different and tailored to the particular audience. On average, 400 people expect to be called by name each Sunday by this one man whose name everybody knows. If you think three sermons between 8:15 and noon is easy, I would encourage you to talk with Sandy Higgs who recently spoke at all three services. Praise God for Debbie Mallory, Director of the Chancel and Bell Choirs, and sidekick Julie McConnell, at the organ, piano or tenor section. If you heard the In the Presence of Jehovah Cantata on Palm Sunday, you cannot help but praise them and the augmented Choir. Amazing! UP Praise God for the quality parents who come with their children each Sunday and Wednesday and to Vacation Bible School. Parents, you are the primary role model for your children. When you happily come to church and Sunday School, your children mimic you they are happy, too. As you praise God for events in your life, tell others about those blessings and share God s grace with others. Allowing the grace of God to flow through you rejuvenates you and invigorates others. Share the Good News and share the grace of God wherever you go praising God. Fred Walsh, Prayer Coordinator RINCON HISPANO (cont.) we are talking about is Christ s body of chosen people. Each of us finds our meaning and function as a part of his body. But as a chopped-off finger or cut-off toe we wouldn t amount to much, would we? So since we find ourselves fashioned into all these excellently formed and marvelously functioning parts in Christ s body, let s just go ahead and be what we were made to be, without enviously or pride fully comparing ourselves with each other, or trying to be something we aren t. (Romans 12:4-6 / The Message) In one body, so as Mount Zion and NUMC Church will work with INTERNET CAFE is why last April 4 was recorded a video to promote this great work, thanks to the collaboration of our fellow cyber: HECTOR MARTINEZ, ARTURO CABRERA, ELVA AND JESSICA PEREZ, LORENZO AND CRISTINA ARICELA ARGUELLO. Always remembering that Internet Cafe is now a reality and that is in your church. The opening will be May 9 at 6 p.m. HOPE YOU COME! We want to thank everyone who made this work possible, for their faith, prayers, their enthusiasm, will and your TIME. MAY

9 INUMC Calling all 5th-graders; Youth Missions support MA TT DIETRICH Director of Youth Y O I T H If you are a parent of a 5th-grade student, I want to invite you to bring your 5th-grader to Youth Group on the second Sunday of each month starting in May! This will be a great way to help students transition into Youth Group as they prepare to start 6th grade in August. Rising 6th-graders can start coming to Youth Group every Sunday night starting August 7, which will be our back-to school pool party. We meet Sunday evenings from 5-7 in the Youth Room to play games, eat, worship and have a lesson. I hope to see lots of 5th-graders on May 8! Youth Mission Trip News Summer is right around the corner, and that means it is time again for the Youth Group Mission Trip. We will be going back to Henderson Settlement in Southeastern Kentucky to help families who live in some of the poorest regions of Appalachia. The Youth Group will be heading to Frakes, KY from June Here are some ways you can help support the youth group as we share the light of Christ with our neighbors in Southeastern Kentucky: 1.) If you have a Kroger card from the Youth Group, do not forget to load it before shopping. If you need a card, call or me ( / numcyouth@gmail.com) and I can get you one. The Youth Group receives 4% of all money loaded on cards and uses it for missions. 2.) Buy a newspaper Sunday mornings. A portion of the proceeds benefit youth missions. 3.) Tuesday, May 17 / 7-9 p.m. ~ Invite everyone you can and bring your whole family to the Lexington Ice Center to play miniature golf on one of three Biblically themed courses. The Youth Group will get a portion of money for each person who plays during this time frame. 4.) Wednesday, May 18 / 5:45-8:30 p.m. ~ Come to NUMC Outreach Night to find out more about Henderson Settlement and sign up to help support in other ways (prayer, tool lending). 5.) Sunday, May 29 / 11:30 a.m.-1 p.m. ~ The Youth Group will be having a Spaghetti Lunch in the Community Center and will be accepting donations to benefit the mission trip. 10 MAKING DISCIPLES HERE, THERE AND EVERY WHERE Please pray for and give to our partners in ministry This month I want to share with you Dr. Dennis Kinlaw s March 22 devotional in This Day With The Master. Perhaps you have read it previously, but let s take a new look at it. He points out the main measurement of a great church. OUT And my God will meet all your needs according to his glorious riches in Christ Jesus. Philippians 4:19 When Paul wrote to the people in Philippi whom he loved so deeply, he was facing death, so his manner was very tender. This church had taken a missionary offering and sent it to Paul. He wrote to thank them and declare their gift to be a fragrant offering, an acceptable sacrifice, pleasing to God (Phil. 4:18). Paul was overjoyed that the church wanted to be a part of his mission to the Gentiles. They were giving so the world could be redeemed. He assured them, My God will meet all your needs according to his glorious riches in Christ Jesus. We have the unfortunate habit of taking single verses and pulling them out of their context. Have you ever quoted that verse about God supplying what is needed? That promise was not declared in a generic fashion. It was spoken to people who had contributed to the work of God. The promise is that if one shares willingly in God s work, God will share in that one s life. A reciprocity emerges between God and his people. I once led a Holy Week series at a formal Presbyterian church in the South. This church radiated incredible power and life, and it had one of the largest groups of university students I have ever seen in any church. As I glanced at the bulletin, I found the reason for its dynamism: 51 percent of its budget was set aside to send for overseas missions. When we care about what God cares about and show that care in sacrificial giving, he is free to bless us and honor us because we are honoring him. Our giving is a fragrant offering to God. Do you want to please God? Be a part of spreading the gospel across the earth through your offerings, your prayers, and yourself. [Used by permission.] Let s pray and give so our NUMC missionaries can take the Gospel to the people of their calling. Are we: the staff, the lay leadership and each individual member willing to meet the challenge, be obedient to God s command to... go and make disciples of all nations... and show that we care by our sacrificial giving? If so, our church will radiate incredible power and life which will lead to our youth being called to take the Gospel to the nations and God s promise, My God will meet all your needs according to his glorious riches in Christ Jesus, will become a reality in our church.
