1 TLC Trumpet Keeping you informed and sharing our experience, strength & hope in the love of Christ Volume 9 No. 2 February 2012 F or the past few years in February, my wonderful landlords (you know, the Lincolns ) have invited me to go with them to a local eatery on Abraham Lincoln s birthday. Roger dons his full Abe costume top hat and tails and, during dinner, he strolls around to every table thanking everyone for coming out for his birthday. He hands out shiny new Lincoln pennies to the children. It is a treat for Roger, who loves his role, for Colleen, who loves her spouse, for me, who loves my landlords, and for the owner and patrons of the restaurant, who get to tell the story of meeting Abraham Lincoln. It is, perhaps, not received with the same kind of dubious-turned-to-delight reactions I ve seen on a lot of faces when this guy dressed like Abraham Lincoln walks up to their table and starts talking to them, but I believe that it is a treat when, putting on Christ, we encounter others. It takes self-awareness, an awake and alert conscience, to put on Christ, to be self-sacrificing in compassion, respect, love. It s easier some times; we fail sometimes too. Maybe there should be a costume. Love, In This Issue Pastor s page... Page 1 Group News... Page 3 News from Lutherans Concerned... Page 4 Adult Classes... Page 6 Jotting from Jean... Any kind of canned soup including stew and chili will work. From the barrow standpoint and for the sake of Marilyn and the TLC resident mice stick with the cans! The mice loved a couple of packages of rice that accidentally landed in the wheelbarrow. Not a worry for the regular giving to the narthex F.I.S.H blue barrel as it has a cover. The soup barrow will be present during this season of lent. TLC did such a great job last year. Let s try for even better this year. F.I.S.H.=Friend in Service Here emergency food pantry, corner of North and Benton Streets, Santa Rosa. Same Day, Additional Time for Tuesday Pericope Study On Tuesdays in 2012, you have two opportunities to join Pastor Jean for a first-glance at the pericopes for the coming Sunday. 4 Center for Lesbian and Gay Studies Lavender Lunch: See the Holy: Spirituality in the Art of David Wojnarowicz February 16th, 2012, 1:00pm-2:00pm, Mudd 100, Berkeley, CA R ising from a devastating early life as a homeless gay youth and hustler in Times Square, David Wojnarowicz became an acclaimed artist and author. His artwork gives holy status to people and places that society has rendered invisible. Using the symbolism of his Roman Catholic childhood, along with images of gay culture and sexuality, the artist depicted an expansive and beautiful spirituality. These images have also been a lightning rod for conflict with conservative Christians, during Wojnarowicz s lifetime and beyond, including the censorship of his film, Fire in My Belly, from a Smithsonian exhibit in Active as an artist during the 1980s and 1990s until his death in 1992 from AIDS-related illnesses, Wojnarowicz was an outspoken critic of the church s silence during the AIDS crisis. David Wojnarowicz ( ), Untitled, Join us as we explore the spiritual themes in his artwork and consider what this artist has to tell us theologically. This Lavender Lunch will be presented by Justin Tanis, Community Outreach and Education Manager of the National Center for Transgender Equality and author of Transgendered: Theology, Ministry and Communities of Faith. News from Phil Soucy, Director Communications Lutherans Concerned of North America Bishop Chris Boerger, ELCA Northwest Washington Synod, testified on Monday at a public hearing of the Washington State Senate Committee on Government Operations and Tribal Relations & Elections, saying that he was in favor of LGBT couples being able to have legallyrecognized marriages that are equal in the state. Rev. Boerger s statement to the hearing: Mr. Chairman, I am Chris Boerger, the bishop of the Northwest Washington Synod of the Evangelical Church in America. In 2009 the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America voted to commit itself to find ways to allow congregations who choose to do so to support and hold publicly accountable lifelong monogamous same gender relationships. That s quite a mouthful: publicly accountable, lifelong, monogamous, same-gender relationships. One of the people who had questions about our 4 doing this said, Bishop, isn t that marriage? And my response is, Well, in everything but name. The reality is, the Lutheran church has always held that it is the state that defines what marriage is; it s the church that then blesses people who enter into that relationship. We have now stated our desire to bless those who are publicly accountable in lifelong, monogamous, same-gender relationships. We can t call it marriage--you can. That s why I am here today to say there will be those in my church who will not participate; we understand that freedom. There are those who want to, and we ask for that freedom. Executive Director Emily Eastwood said, We thank Bp. Boerger for his courageous witness. His Continued on page 5

The Northwest Tim Feiertag Joins Staff of Lutherans Concerned Lutherans Concerned has hired Tim Feiertag as Grassroots Organizing and Training Coordinator at the LC/NA headquarters in St. Paul, Minnesota. Tim will take up his position on February 15. Tim is a 2009 Mdiv. Graduate of Pacific Lutheran Theological Seminary, and a graduate of Valparaiso University with a degree in Social Work. He has more than a dozen years experience helping people and groups to find solutions in direct service, supervisory, pastoral and administrative support positions he has held. He comes to LC/NA and St. Paul from his employ in Kansas City with the Missouri Children s Division as a case worker for abused and neglected children and their families. Tim has a long history of involvement in Lutherans Concerned in leadership, training, and organizing at the local, regional and national level. Beginning in the early 1990s, Tim started as the co-chair of the Kansas City/Lawrence Chapter. He joined the national board of directors of LC/NA in 1995 as the Regional Director for the Central Region. In 1998, he was elected co-chair of LC/NA, a position he held until Across time he has participated in and conducted various trainings, from I-Wheel to RIC and Building an Inclusive Church. Washington Synod has long supported full participation for LGBT people in the life of church and society. Bp. Boerger s statements reflect the views already expressed by the synod. Nevertheless, by taking these views to the legislature and, therefore, into the media, Bp. Boerger has acted for justice. Our thanks are due. The hearing was on Senate Bill 6239, An act relating to providing equal protection for all families in Washington by creating equality in civil marriage and changing the domestic partnership laws, while protecting religious freedom... Emily Eastwood, Executive Director, said, I am so very pleased that Tim has accepted our invitation to join the staff of LC/NA. He has demonstrated his commitment to our organization through many years of service in a number of different volunteer positions. His easy smile, pastoral presence, quirky humor, and abiding faith will bring welcome additions to our ministry. We confirm his call from God and his passion for our reconciling programs. We thank him for his willingness to relocate to St. Paul to take this position. Tim said, As a gay man, I have been blessed by the welcome I received in my home congregation and in my seminary, both of which are Reconciling In Christ organizations. I am excited to work through LC/NA in helping others to broaden and deepen our Christian vocations of hospitality and reconciliation. After February 15, Tim can be reached by phone ( ) or grassroots@lcna.org. We ask you all to join us in welcoming Tim to our staff as he takes on the exciting and important work that lies before him. 5

7 Women of the ELCA SPS At the October Biennial Assembly of the Women of the ELCA Sierra Pacific Synod, Pastor Jean was elected to serve a two-year term on the Board. She attended the first board meeting in January. Among the demands of the Board are the goals to support the resolutions made at the Assembly. The first resolution calls for women in the ELCA to support the 1,000 days Initiative. Though the underlying causes of malnutrition can be traced back to issues of food, care, health, hygiene and ultimately, poverty, there is one critical determinant that has been overlooked: the status of women. While increasing the intake of vitamins and minerals and promoting good nutritional practices are absolutely essential to combating malnutrition, some argue that improving the status of women and expanding their access to education, resources, and land rights can prove even more impactful to the long term eradication of the problem. Malnutrition is a global shame. As a community, we must take a serious look at the role that women the first and primary custodian of a child s health play in their societies. Are they equal partners in land ownership? Is their work valued the same way that men s work is? Do they have the same opportunities for education and jobs? For too long and in too many places, women and girls have been condemned to eat last and eat least. This cannot be the case if we are to end the grip that malnutrition has on countless futures. As a community, we must take a serious look at the role that women the first and primary custodian of a child s health play in their societies. For more information, check out The second resolution calls for women to support the ELCA Malaria Campaign which aims to wipe out malaria by the year The Board, in its January meeting, voted to sell fly swatters at the 2012 Sierra Pacific Synod Assembly, May 18-20, as its first action of support. (The swatters were Pastor Jean s idea!). You can get involved by putting in an order with TLC s voting member! Other work of the Board includes planning and coordinating the next synod women s retreat and the next biennial assembly. Please support Pastor Jean in her involvement with this expression of the wider church. Jottings, continued years of service on the Council...I heard that Sandy Koppen and Judy Sawyer had a nice visit...george and Diane Land were in Huntington Beach for the holidays...it was great to see Roma Dakini-Bella Donna in church again and doing so well...thanks to Jan Tiedemann for joining the Stewardship Committee...anyone else want to step up and join one of the committees at TLC?...congratulations to Tim Feiertag on his appointment as Grassroots Organizing and Training Coordinator for Lutherans Concerned/North America and to his proud parents Ingrid and Paul...be sure to ask Astrid Anderson about her trip to Cancun...Grace Israelson has been in the hospital is home and seen her heart Dr. who says she should take it easy, so she is...thanks to Karen Lehman for organizing, Pastor Jean and her sister Janet for leading, Jan Loewen for playing her guitar, and Sandy Koppen for her solos at the Women s Retreat. 7

During Lent this year, on Sundays and Thursdays, we will examine different interpretations of cross designs, explore other meanings and definitions outside Christianity, and learn the stories of favorite hymns about the cross of Christ. Diane Land is creating cross banners to grace our sanctuary. Lent begins on February 22, on Ash Wednesday. We will hold our traditional evening worship service which includes Holy Communion and the imposition of ashes. It is a powerful beginning to the Lenten journey to the cross, to the empty grave, and to the joyful news of Easter: Christ is Risen! Get Ready to Get Phreaky!
