1 The May & June 2018 BrOaDsiDer Covering the Broadside Benefice parishes of Ranworth with Panxworth, South Walsham, Upton & Fishley, and Woodbastwick Dear Friends, On Monday April 16 th, Green Pastures Christian Bookshop in Dereham installed a community fridge. Local businesses can deposit food that has passed its sell by but not its use by date, for anyone to take free of charge. On Christmas Day 1596, the Privy Council ordered every household in England to fast for one evening a week and to give the food they d saved to the hungry. What do these two events have in common? Both offer a challenge to people s lifestyles, how to avoid waste and share what they had with those who had nothing. In the depths of winter of 1596, many Norfolk people were starving after two failed harvests, and grain riots were said to have occurred in Norwich a month earlier. The Privy Council s message was effectively saying, we re all in this together. For the next year, it was a clear Christian duty to feed the neighbour and even the stranger. Churchwardens were to report hoarding and lack of goodwill to the authorities. The community fridge is just one manifestation of our current drive to end the wasteful dumping of perfectly edible food and also to distribute resources to people who have to manage on little or no budget. Recently I attended a presentation by an officer from Fare Share, a large British charity dedicated to eradicating food waste and hunger. They collect large amounts of food from supermarkets and suppliers and sell it to Foodbanks at heavily discounted prices. They even deliver game birds. A charity called the Country Trust collects donated partridges and pheasants from shoots and turns them into microwaveable casseroles. They ve proved very popular with Foodbank clients! I am amazed and gratified to walk into our churches and see food, toiletries, drinks and sometimes gifts appear in our Foodbank boxes week by week. It shows that people in our communities are taking personal responsibility for our unknown neighbours, who are also God s children. I also find it harder to remember the time before Foodbanks existed and wonder whether the need will ever disappear. In May we have the opportunity to extend our care by taking responsibility for our brothers and sisters further away. The Christian Aid envelope in this issue of the Broadsider is the means by which we can make a difference to people affected by war, poverty and climate change. When our harvests fail, food prices rise. When theirs fail, the consequences are far worse, just as they were for our Elizabethan ancestors. Life would have been tough for almost everyone in 1596, but people could still find something to share. The world needs our generosity more than ever. With all good wishes, Nick Garrard

Christian Aid has more than 70 years experience of working in partnership to support communities to thrive. They tackle the root causes of poverty so that women, men and children the world over are strengthened against future knocks. And if disasters happen, they get people the help they want straight away. Together we re stronger than the storms is the theme of Christian Aid Week As the world s climate becomes more unpredictable and extreme weather conditions are more frequent, the world s poorest people are disproportionately affected. Visit the Christian Aid website to find out more through the story of Marcelin s family in Haiti: Hopefully, your copy of the Broadsider should contain a Christian Aid gift envelope. If not, please contact Nick Garrard, who will be happy to provide one. If you wish to make a donation, please would you bring your envelope to the following locations: Fairhaven School: School Office. Fishley: St. Mary s Church (Friday & Sunday). Ranworth: your envelope will be collected from your home. South Walsham: The Rectory. Upton: Upton Community Shop. Woodbastwick: SS.Fabian & Sebastian s Church. If you are unable to do so and would like your envelope to be collected, please contact Nick and Helen ( ). You may prefer to donate online at www. christianaid.org.uk/donations Thank you 2

3 A Big Thank You to Helen and the team who provided Monday Munch during Lent and the Passover Meal. The Munches raised plus some Gift Aid for the Diocesan Lent Appeal in aid of the Anglican Church of Papua New Guinea. This broke last year s record by a big margin!... to everyone who shared our Benefice journey through Holy Week to Easter. It was a well-supported and very meaningful time for all who took part.... to all who attended the Annual General Meeting and stood for election to our PCCs. Study Leave I have been given permission by Bishop Alan to take a period of study leave from May 5 th to June 2 nd in order to prepare my PhD Art History thesis for submission in the autumn. This focussed time will help me to achieve this and I am most grateful to the Bishop, Helen and all my colleagues here to take this opportunity. If you wish to discuss any Church matters during this period, please contact Helen, the churchwardens or Suzy Strowger, the Benefice Administrative Assistant. All their details are available in the contact panel on the adjoining page. 4 Marking 100 years since the Armistice ending World War I and also the Formation of the RAF and remembering those who served and those who lost their lives in service to their country St Helens Church, Ranworth and Norwich City Concert Band Director of Music: Brian Dermott present a Concert of Music by Mozart and Strauss with A Last Night of the Proms on Saturday 16 th June 2018 at 7.30 pm Tickets 9 from 1st Impressions Tel: The Band Charity for 2018 is: FINNBAR S FORCE Fighting Childhood Brain Tumours Finnbar s Force That s a strange name! I had not heard of Finnbar s Force until today. I noticed that this was the 2018 charity which Norwich City Concert Band were supporting, when they sent their advert through for the concert to be held in Ranworth Church on June 16 th. So I thought that I would find out a bit more. Finnbar Cork lived in Hethersett and was a sociable, happy little boy who was diagnosed with a brain tumour in 2016; within 5 months he had passed away, just before his sixth birthday. Finnbar s father, paramedic, Tristan Cork, said: Finnbar fought this with every ounce that he could give and so did we. We fought everything with 24/7 care and made sure he had as nice a life as we could. He didn t lose a fight. He didn t lose a battle. He didn t not fight hard enough. The fact is that he was given a death sentence. When you are swimming against a tide like that, there s no hope. It s an example of how unjust the world is brain tumours are one of the most common cancers in children and young adults, yet there is so little research into them. From the moment Finnbar became poorly, our lives completely stopped and the time since has been unbearable. But we are left determined to see something good happen in Finnbar s name and memory. Finnbar loved Star Wars and with that in mind, the charity of Finnbar s Force was set up by his parents, with the aim of providing new hope in the fight against childhood brain tumours. The charity has already given thousands of pounds to a research project in Birmingham. Half of the proceeds of the raffle at the concert will be going to this charity so please keep this in mind when you buy your raffle tickets. However, I needn t have had any qualms because Upton Village Hall proved to be an excellent venue and the Acle Chippy a very successful choice for the food where Shirley gave a generous discount on each of the nights. Following the final on 16 th March, the total raised over the four nights amounted to 2, which, divided in two and with a little rounding up, means that the Big C and the Salvation Army s Toys and Tins Appeal will each receive I would like to thank everyone who took part in the quizzes for their generosity and support. Special thanks should go to Ginny and Jackie at Upton, Shirley at Acle, Beryl for cooking pizzas, Ann and Mark for their excellent scoring and raffle ticket selling, and Ian for setting up the hall and doing the food run. Without your support the evenings would not have run so smoothly and I am extremely grateful to all of you. I couldn t do it without you.
