Banner Prince of Peace LIVING OUR BAPTISM Our Lenten Journey This Lent Season, we are all reminded of our public affirmation of our baptism: 1. To live among God s faithful people, 2. To hear the Word of God and share in the Lord s supper, 3. To proclaim the good news of God in Christ through word and deed, 4. To serve all people, following the example of Jesus, and To strive for justice and peace in all the earth. There are a lot of events taking place in our society today, some have temporal effects but some have eternal consequences. In seeking to fulfill our public confession at baptism, Lent is an ideal season for us as a church to reflect on what those five promises mean in our contexts. Just like our Triune God, we are called to live in community among God s faithful people. This can be right in our neighborhood, at work, in shopping malls, salons, or even at the pet shop. Through the waters of baptism, God becomes the source of that life that we live and we take on his DNA of love and care for each other. During our Lenten journey, I want to invite you to want to deepen the relationships of those around you. Our simplest of actions can start an avalanche of change that we so yearn for in our church and community. For instance, praying for your unsuspecting neighbor for good health, family, or fulfilment in their employment. But it starts with you and me, accepting our baptismal call. This can be the difference between I go to church and I am the church. My prayer is that through this Lenten season, we will grow closer and stronger with each other and also with our community. 2 CHURCH MAINTENANCE Wednesday, March 7 9:00 a.m. Church Maintenance Lately a lot of talk has been going around about the state of the Education Building s appearance. We hope to get some volunteers together to help move things around inside and decide what is and what isn t being used there. It has gotten cluttered by us and by outside groups. I ve reached out to the outside users of our building and they agree we could offer them more attractive storage options and we have the freedom to move their belongings and organize them with the express promise that they keep it well organized during their use. With that in mind, I hope interested parties could come out and help move some of the bulkier items out of the Fireside Room and relocate them where they make sense (or dispose of those things that no longer make sense). Thanks everyone. Your help with the committee is invaluable. My office looks the way it looks today because ART LANDSKOV came out and helped the Goodriches, Sam Sseba, and Chris Simonds move the big heavy items around. Thanks, Art! You are a hero to me! Deborah Santiago MARCH S COMMUNITY MEAL Come out on Tuesday, March 6, at 6:00 p.m. for our monthly FREE community meal. Come out for this special monthly meal and get to know some of the people who regularly attend. It s good fun and the food is amazing (personal experience here). There is usually also some fun musical entertainment. We are always looking for volunteers to help prepare the meal, set up the Fellowship Hall or clean up after the meal. We also need drivers who can take to go meals to Hospitality House or other shut in members who would like to receive them. Interested in volunteering? See Stan Skjeie at church or contact him via phone at (206) or Skjeie.stan@comcast.net. TUESDAY MORNING BIBLE STUDY Join us every Tuesday at 8:00 a.m. We meet at the Des Moines Creek Restaurant at Marine View Dr S. All are welcome to join! LADIES BOOK CLUB March s meeting will take place on Monday, March 12, at 11:00 a.m. in the Fireside Room. March s book is All the Light We Cannot See. If you enjoy a good book, Joyce Lentz will be happy to answer any questions you have about Ladies Book Club. Reach her at (206) HOSPITALITY HOUSE Hospitality House Supplies March is one of the two months PoP is specifically asked to donate household supplies and office supplies to the shelter. 4 WELCA WOMEN OF PRINCE OF PEACE In March our Bible Study will be looking at the parable of the Good Samaritan. We have heard this story too many times to count and know the story well. How has this story been meaningful to you? Probably most of the people in the U. S. know the story. How is it used? Is there any way that we could learn something new? After reading the study, there are some new insights...at least for me! Different cultures look at parables differently...and there are different applications in our contemporary society. Again the author has provided some thoughtprovoking questions and insights. As the author shares, The Bible is a living word. It often means different things to different people not because people misunderstand it (though of course that does happen), but because God speaks through Scripture to people in ways that they need to hear. Women s Bible Study Circle meetings will take place the third full week of March with the exception of Grace Circle which will meet on Monday, March 12, at 10:00 a.m.. Peace Circle will meet Monday, March 19, at 10:00 a.m.; Joy Circle will meet Tuesday, March 20. at 7:00 p.m.; and Faith Circle will meet Thursday, March 22, at 10:00 a.m.. All circles meet at the church...and ALL are welcome. Find a time that works for you and come on down. The prologue to the Gather Magazine this month says, The living word of Scripture speaks to us all in unique, profound and meaningful ways and that is a good thing. The MANY articles that speak to that are outlined on page 3. Each article has a hook that will draw us in to read what that author has to say. Departments are rich with things to ponder as well. We can thank God for these Christian authors that tweak our thinking and encourage us on our faith walk. The latest Lutheran World Relief Faith in Action issue highlighted Quilting, Baby Care Kits, and School Kits. The report encourages all who participate in any or all three of these important in gatherings. Headline for Quilts: 38 years & 30 miles of quilts (23,865 quilts) and this is from one church in Valders, Wisconsin. Great story. There are two more stories highlighting the other two kits. The report will be posted on the WELCA bulletin board. Big numbers are wonderful, but each quilt, school kit, and baby care kit blesses someone. THANK YOU and God bless everyone that participates in any way!! WELCA would like to continue its emphasis on supporting Highline Food Bank with donations of canned protein products. Consider purchasing canned meats, tuna, Spam, or beans, and jars of peanut butter or other nut spreads to donate to the food bank bin in the Narthex th Ave S, SeaTac Volume 27 Issue 3

Old business: NONE New Business: NONE Stan left the meeting at 7:49 p.m. Budget Spending Plan: John Kelly states that our job is to approve the spending guide. It is a continuation of our ministries. Some laws changed so we needed to look at that as well as how ministries are supported through our budget going forward th Ave S, SeaTac Volume 27 Issue 3

Motion has been given to approve the top line budget it was approved. The giving needs to be stressed at how positive this is for our congregation celebrate this piece. There is a lot of giving that is not in this budget. Council President Stan Skjeie brought two recommendations from the Personnel Committee for inclusion into the 2018 Budget Spending Plan in regards to employee salary changes for Deborah Santiago. Increase salary by 5% bringing hourly wage from $19/hr to $20/hr. Pastor Conrad Tollefson. Award a one-time bonus of $2,400. After some discussion, congregation council approved the salary recommendations. Adjourn: As there was no other business, the meeting was adjourned at 8:05 p.m. Respectfully submitted, Sam Sseba EASTER EGG HUNT Saturday, March 31, starting at 10:00 a.m. children ages 12 and under are invited to take part in the Annual Easter Egg Hunt at Prince of Peace. See Cindy McKay at church or call her at HOLY BAPTISM On Sunday, February 25, we welcomed into the body of Christ, Arne Frederick Johnson, son of Lindsey and Craig Johnson, grandson of Georgia Johnson. YOU DON T HAVE A PROBLEM The Rev. Kirby Unti, Bishop, NWWA Synod From the March 2018 edition of The Spirit During my formative years, my dad was the Executive Director for the Easter Seal Society of Washington. It no doubt shaped his values - and informed mine as well. Let s just say he knew - and introduced to me - a great number of people who whose physical and mental challenges were not always easy to cope with. One such introduction was to Johnny Kemp - who was born without arms or legs. His parents were told he would be better off institutionalized. Dad convinced the Kemp family that Johnny could be fitted with artificial arms and legs and that he would do just fine. He became a life-long friend who went on to have a successful law firm - providing counsel to people with disabilities. Then there was Harold Wilke - who was born without arms. I remember the first time he sat at our family dinner table. Smoothly operating his knife and fork with his feet, he removed any doubt that he could do anything. You should have seen him pick out the correct paper denominations from his wallet when paying for a purchase. The stories go on including my attendance at Easter Seal Camp with my dad where I witnessed kids my age readily do what I was unable to do given all my body parts. This background is important to understand the wisdom that dad shared with me the first time I got a dent in my first car. I was devastated. A friend sat on the hood and left an impression equal to her size. My day was ruined. More like my whole week was ruined. There was also the time I had my car window broken and my eight-track player and tapes were stolen th Ave S, SeaTac Volume 27 Issue 3

His response in both cases was the same, Kirby if money can fix it, you don t have a problem. My dad taught me so much about perspective. How do you weigh the things in life that matter? He taught me wisdom The patient sorting out of what choices lead to life and what choices lead to death. You can only imagine what my own girls have gone through. The first time my girls dented their cars you can be sure what words came out of my mouth. They may not be words filled with great empathy, but they are words filled with great truth. Life does present us with challenges that money can do nothing to fix. These are the challenges that really matter. These are the challenges that call us to place our faith in God. Johnny and Harold were both people of great faith; people who taught me that even when money can t fix what you are facing, faith can make all the difference in the world. Faith moves people from being victims to survivors - teaching all of us to see the challenges of life as opportunities to grow in faith and lean sharply into the direction of life. Let us lean into this life together, knowing that God is leading. LENTEN OFFERING RECIPIENT AudioBook Ministries Familiar for many years as Tape Ministries NW, this organization records spiritual resources for all who find it difficult to read because of eyesight and associated conditions. The resulting free lending library of Christian Literature for the blind and disabled now has over 3,000 titles. In recent years the changeover to digital format has required much extra work and cost, and AudioBook Ministries has done the transition well and provides resources where some others were unable to continue. They operate out of the former parsonage here at Prince of Peace, and help clients throughout the country. EMERGENCY PREPAREDNESS PLANNING Please join us for upcoming meetings of the Emergency Preparedness Team if you are interested in updating our emergency plans and being involved in implementing them. Meetings happen: March 19 at 3 PM April 16 at 3 PM May 21 at 3 PM The church is working to get the plans for emergencies updated as we become more aware of the possibilities of seismic events and in case of ANY possible emergency scenarios. It s important in this climate to have contingency plans for anything that can go wrong on the property. REMEMBERING GREG VICARS It is with great sadness that we share that our dear Greg Vicars has been called home to his Heavenly Father with family by his side. Greg had been bravely battling pancreatic cancer since his diagnosis in July. He underwent surgery in August and began chemotherapy thereafter. Through it all, he and his wife, Cindy, have held on to their faith in God and the Hope that He brings to all. Psalm 139:16 reminds us that God knew the days Greg would have on this earth. "Your eyes saw my unformed body; all the days ordained for me were written in your book before one of them came to be." Each of us has been touched by Greg in some th Ave S, SeaTac Volume 27 Issue 3

way or another. His commitment to his beloved wife, children, and grandchildren was extraordinary. His love for God, his country, and his community was extraordinary. He was a man of great character and such an encouragement to all. His example is one to follow in how he would pull up a chair and chat, or lead a group of people to a common goal. He always made time for the important things in life: people. We were some of those fortunate ones, weren't we? While we grieve his passing, we also have the promise that he is in his eternal home with Jesus. He no longer suffers from pain or disease. His soul will live forever in the Holy, golden streets of heaven just as all the saints before him, and the ones to follow. Please pray for comfort and peace for Cindy, Nick (Heather), Laurie (Raymond) and his grandchildren. "The eternal God is your refuge, and underneath are the everlasting arms." -Deuteronomy 33:27 Judy Schwanke & the Staff at AUDIOBOOK MINISTRIES ESTHER PAULINE HUNTER People were always amazed when they found out Esther Hunter raised five sons. They would say, Wow, how did you do that? That must have been a challenge. Once they got to know her, they had their answers. Sure there were challenges, but she overcame those with her loving, caring, forgiving, sweet, humble, and kind nature. And she had a sense of humor; had to have that with the Hunter boys. Esther was born May 17, 1923, in Alpena, Michigan, near the shores of Lake Huron, one of the Great Lakes. She was the daughter of a Lutheran minister and moved at age three with her family to Chelsea, Michigan. She grew up with an older sister (Johanna), two older brothers (Moritz, Ted) and a younger sister (Irma). Esther graduated from Capital University in Ohio with a teaching degree. She met James P. Hunter at Capital. They were married August 24, Jim Bud and Esther started life together in Detroit, where son John was born, before moving to St. Clair, Michigan, where four more sons were born enough for a basketball team. The family of seven moved west in 1960 to Salem, Oregon, where much of the raising of the sons occurred. Jim, Esther and three of their sons moved in 1971 to Seattle. The couple moved in 1978 to Gresham, Oregon. Esther moved to Des Moines in 1995, six years after her husband died. She wanted to live closer to her young grandchildren in the Seattle area so she could enjoy quality time with them and watch their athletic and musical performances. Esther enjoyed singing in church choirs with her beautiful alto voice. She volunteered at a hospital in Portland to greet visitors and at schools in the Des Moines area to help kids with their reading. She loved to play golf and tennis and participated in water aerobics, activities she credited for living into her 90s and keeping a sharp mind. She moved to retirement centers in Seattle for her final eight years. She died peacefully in her sleep on February 11, early on a Sunday morning. Survivors include her five sons John, of Troutdale, Oregon; Ted, of Seattle; Jim (Margo), of Seattle; Bill, of Federal Way; and Steve, of Des Moines; eight grandchildren and one greatgrandchild. OUR PRAYERS ARE WITH: Betsy Poehlman, Kathy Hand, Sandy Jennings, Meeri Clark, Frank Lentz, June Brady, Norma Heath, JoAnn Alexander, Claude Wesson, Carolyn Wesson, John Ahartz, Wade Peterson, Bonalynn Henderson, Anna Wagner, Ken Schultz, Brady Switzer, the family of Audrey Anderson at her passing, the family of Greg Vicars at his passing, and Scott Randall and his family at the passing of Scott s mother, Lois th Ave S, SeaTac Volume 27 Issue 3

SUNDAY WORSHIP SCHEDULE GOSPEL FOR MARCH March 4 John 2:13-22 Jesus attacks the commercialization of religion by driving merchants out of the temple. When challenged, he responds mysteriously, with the first prediction of his own death and resurrection. In the midst of a seemingly stable religious center, Jesus suggests that the center itself has changed. March 11 John 3:14-21 To explain the salvation of God to the religious leader, Nicodemus, Jesus refers to the scripture passage from Numbers 21. Just as those who looked upon the bronze serpent were healed, so people will be saved when they behold Christ lifted up on the cross. March 18 John 12:20-33 Jesus entered Jerusalem for the last time to celebrate the Passover festival. Here Jesus words about seeds planted in the ground turn the disaster of his death into the promise of a harvest in which everyone will be gathered. March 25 14:1 15:47 The passion story in Mark s gospel presents Jesus as one who dies abandoned by all. He shows himself to be the true Son of God by giving his life for those who have forsaken him.
