3 CHURCH ACTIVITY REPORT EVENT SUMMARY The Ocean City Council #9053 of the Knight of Columbus held its annual memorial Mass on 07 November 2017 at 7 PM at St. Luke s Church located in Ocean City, Maryland. At this Mass, Council #9053 honored those fellow Knights and Ladies from the Auxiliary who had died during the previous year. HIGHLIGHTS Council #9053 s chaplain, Reverend Father John Lunnes, celebrated the Mass. The Ocean City Fourth Degree Knights of Columbus Assembly #2454 Knights Color Guard, lead by its captain, Neil Foote, wore the traditional regalia and carried the sword honoring Christ and His apostles during this religious occasion. The Color Guard formed the Honor Guard through which the Reverend Father Lunnes processed and recessed before and after Mass. Following Reverend Father Lunnes homily, the sacristan dimmed lights, and our Worthy Grand Knight, Joseph Gangi, and the President of the Ladies Auxiliary, Dee Mathews, read the names of the deceased. Selected Knights and Ladies rose and responded absent when either Worthy Grand Knight Joseph Gangi or President Dee Mathew read the name of a deceased individual, and these selected Knights and Ladies remained standing until the Worthy Grand Knight and Auxiliary President read the complete list of deceased individuals. It was a very moving ceremony. Following the Mass, the Knights and the Ladies Auxiliary provided refreshments in the Women s Holy Room at St. Luke s. PURPOSE OF THE EVENT The Roman Catholic Church established the month of November for the deceased souls as a perpetual commemoration in the 10 th century. This tradition stemmed from the traditional time to visit the graves of loved ones on the anniversary of their deaths. This tradition, coupled with Autumn as the dying season when the trees shine like rainbows in September and October until November arrives and the leaves pass away and the chilly rains shellac the tree trunks and branches, let us remember that prayers are extremely powerful in assisting the souls of our loved ones in their journey to attaining eternal life and peace. As Catholics, we celebrate the birth into eternal life of our beloved dead, the birthright of the Christian received at Baptism, and we can communicate with loved ones beyond the grave through Scripture, the sacraments, prayer and also by offering a Mass in their name, by giving alms, by indulgences or other works of penance done for their benefit. Hence, we have this annual Mass to honor and offer prayers and petitions for those who have passed during the past year.

4 CHURCH ACTIVITY REPORT PLANNING The Knights of Columbus Assembly #2454 Color Corps Captain, Brother Neil Foote, and the Knight of Columbus Council # 9053 Church Program Director, Brother Steve Mastbrook, joined together to plan this Special Mass at a prior Council meeting, coordinating this entire effort with the St. Luke s Parish office and priests, as well as, holding a special meeting just prior to the Mass. PROMOTION The Knights of Columbus Council #9053 s Communications Director, Brother Tom Foglesong, kept everyone informed about the memorial Mass by sending reminders to the members of our Council. Brother Steve Mastbrook also had announcements put into our Council s monthly newsletter, Knight Times, and on our Council s website. EVENT POSTSCRIPT Special thanks to all the members (Brothers) of the Color Corps that participated: Bartholomew, Joe Burnett, Chuck Celeste, Frank Cooke, Richard Coons, Bruce Crabill, Jim David, Lou Fairbend, Rick Foote, Neil (Captain) Gangi, Joseph Herwig, Tom Matthews, Jim Straight, Wayne Thomas, Richard Council #9053 would also like to thank the President of the Ladies Auxiliary, Dee Matthews, for her participation during this Memorial Mass.

13 COMMUNITY ACTIVITY REPORT EVENT SUMMARY In the fall of each year, the Ocean City Knights of Columbus Council #9053 s Community Director, Brother Tom Foglesong, and the Charity Committee Chairperson, Brother Tom Herwig, coordinate our Council s efforts with the Knights of Columbus Supreme organization to purchase and distribute winter coats to local (Ocean City) needy children. In years past, Council #9053 has provided coats to the three (3) local Catholic churches, St. Luke s, Holy Savior and St. John Neumann, and the only local Catholic school, Most Blessed Sacrament (MBS) Catholic School. This year Council #9053 decided to expand the outreach of its program to include the Ocean City Fire Department (OCVFD), as well as, the Ocean City Crisis Center, which is behind an In From the Cold Shelter Program for nights when the temperature is below 32 o Fahrenheit. Below is the list to whom Council #9053 distributed the ten (10) boxes of coats: ORGANIZATION Holy Savior Parish 2 Most Blessed Sacrament School 2 Ocean City Fire Department 1 Ocean City Crisis Center 1 St. John Neumann Parish 2 St. Luke s Parish 2 QUANTITY (NUMBER OF BOXES) HIGHLIGHTS All organizations receiving the coats were very excited to be recipients of this year s program. Council #9053 decided to expand it efforts this year, and it was extremely pleased to partner with the OCVFD and the Ocean City Crisis Center because our Coats for Kids Program melded so nicely with their established programs. Council #9053 is thrilled about the potential growth opportunities that can result from the union between our organizations. PURPOSE OF THE EVENT Every community has its unique needs. For the Knights of Columbus, whose first principle is charity, finding ways to help those in need in their communities is a mission our Council embraces. Knowing that many low-income families use their scarce resources to meet the most basic essentials and that they need help to provide for vital winter necessities, Council #9053 puts into action its vision of ensuring that needy children have new winter coats to wear by selecting/participating in this mission to provide new winter coats to children in need

14 COMMUNITY ACTIVITY REPORT The Council s objectives are that these children can remain healthy; be able to attend school regularly and have a strong self-esteem. PLANNING Early in September of 2017, Council #9053 accepted the Coats for Kids challenge by once again asking its Charity Chairmen, Brother Tom Herwig, to coordinate our Council s effort with the Community Program Director, Brother Tom Foglesong. Once Brothers Tom and Tom met and created an plan of action acceptable to our Council and its officers, Brother Tom Herwig coordinated the effort with six (6) recipient organizations, completed and submitted the K of C Coats for Kids Order Form to the Knights of Columbus Supreme organization, arranged a central delivery point for the ten (10) boxes of coats, and ultimately, coordinated the delivery team to deliver the boxes of coats to the recipient organizations. PROMOTION Brother Tom Herwig contacted our previous points of contact in Holy Savior, MBS Catholic School, St. John Neumann and St. Luke s to see if these organizations wanted to participate in this year s Coats for Kids program. Internally within our Council and the Ladies Auxiliary, Brother Tom asked if any Council members or Ladies knew of any friends, relatives or other organization that could benefit from our Coats for Kids Program. Based on suggestions which he received, Brother Tom initiated contact with the OCVFD and the Ocean City Crisis Center to explain our Coats for Kids Program to them and to see if our program could integrate into their efforts. EVENT POSTSCRIPT Council #9053 s efforts to provide needy children with warm winter coats were once again a very worthwhile and successful endeavor. By purchasing and distributing these 120 coats, Council #9053 has helped low-income families in our communities not only warmly clothe their children against the cold weather, but it also allows the children to hold their head high with dignity and self esteem. Council #9053 was thrilled about the new partnerships between OCVFD and the Ocean City Crisis Center, which have the similar clothing service programs/goals as the Knight. Together, we were able to help some low-income families meet the challenges of the cold and winter. Our Council would like to recognize Brothers Charlie Lamb, Wayne Straight, Tom Irwin and Tom Foglesong who drove around Ocean City and its communities to distribute the twelve (12) boxes of coats to the recipient organizations.

The others who have benefited from this project are the OCVFD and the Ocean City Crisis Center. Through our program, these two (2) organizations have extra resources to meet their customers needs.

21 COUNCIL ACTIVITY REPORT EVENT SUMMARY The Knights of Columbus Council #9053 held a Breakfast to Help Hurricane Harvey Victims on 01 September Although Council #9053 has an all you can eat Breakfast with the Knights on the second and fourth Sunday of the month from spring to early fall to raise funds to support the operations of the Council and donations to local charities, Council #9053 decided that it would hold a special Sunday breakfast, Breakfast to Help Hurricane Harvey Victims, to raise funds to donate to the Hurricane Harvey Relief Effort. Normally, between 80 and 100 people, on a good Sunday, attend these breakfasts, but our Council served a record 241 customers at this special breakfast. In terms of dollars from this breakfast, our Council made close to $2,400, less expenses of $960, for a profit of $1,440. In addition to the paying for their meals, our customers also contributed over $1000 in the tip jar. After seeing the generosity of the customers, our Council voted to absorb the expenses, and include it with our donation from our Council to the Knights of Columbus Texas State Council Disaster Fund. HIGHLIGHTS With a record number of attendees, 241 persons, at this special breakfast, the Ocean City (Maryland) community gracefully showed its support to Council #9053 s efforts to donate to the Hurricane Harvey Relief Effort. The unexpected $1000 in the tip jar echoed the support that our customers had for this Breakfast to Help Hurricane Harvey Victims. PURPOSE OF THE EVENT When Father McGivney founded Knights of Columbus in 1882, he had the intention of helping those most in need. From then to the present time, the Knights have continued this legacy through our works of charity, for example, helping disaster victims. When our neighbors are left with nothing, the Knights are among the first to rush in and help them get back on their feet. This fact coupled with fact that our local communities have experienced first handed similar, but not as devastating, effects from Hurricane Sandy and fall and winter nor easters, Council # 9053 knew that it needed to help the Hurricane Harvey victims. Council #9053 s goal was to ensure that 100% of its donation went to the devastated Harvey victims. After researching which organization would give 100% of its donations, our Council decided to send a $3,000 check to the Knights of Columbus Texas State Council Disaster Fund. PLANNING Since Council #9053 holds Breakfast with the Knights twice a month from spring to early fall, it already knew what food items to purchase and prepare, and it already had a designated team for preparing the food, setting-up the hall, serving and cleaning up after customers finish eating.

22 COUNCIL ACTIVITY REPORT Nevertheless, our kitchen manager, Brother Richard Thomas, ordered additional food to serve between 275 and 300 people because these breakfasts are all you can eat. As with any breakfast which our Council serves, we plan for the leftovers. If we have any leftovers, our Council takes them to Diakonia, Inc., a Worcester County, Maryland, food, homeless shelter and help facility for men women and families. The real difference between this Breakfast to Help Hurricane Harvey Victims and our usual Breakfast with the Knights was the advertising effort. PROMOTION Council #9053 advertised for this event through the three local Catholic Churches (Saint Luke, Holy Savior and Saint John Neumann) in the Ocean City (Maryland) area by making announcements in their Church bulletins and at Masses, as well as, the Council used the local news media to let everyone know about this special breakfast and exactly where our Council would send the profits to the very worthwhile effort to help the Hurricane Harvey victims. EVENT POSTSCRIPT Council #9053 thanks all the people who supported this disaster relief effort, as well as, our members and the ladies of the auxiliary who helped set-up, prepare, server and clean-up making this our Council s best Sunday breakfast. MANPOWER SUMMARY Man-hours for Planning and Preparing: 18 Man-hours for the Event: 36 Total Man-hours: 54 TOTAL NUMBER OF GUESTS 241 WHO BENEFITED MOST FROM THIS PROJECT The victims of Hurricane Harvey benefited because they could begin the long process of putting their lives back together. The Knights of Columbus Texas State Council Disaster fund benefited because it had additional funds to provide shelter, food and water to the hurricane victims. Diakonia, Inc. received the few leftovers which helped to feed its people. Last, but not least, the public, our customers, who ate a great breakfast at a great price.

26 FAMILY ACTIVITY REPORT EVENT SUMMARY In keeping with one of the Knights of Columbus founding core principles of families spending time together, Council #9053 begins in September and continues until late spring hosting a Simple Supper once a month for families within our Council, as well as, parishioners, neighbors and friends from our local community. At very good price of $7.00 a person, this encourages all to take advantage of a great, inexpensive dinner, and at the same time, it allows us to interact socially as a family unit. HIGHLIGHTS Since Council #9053 holds a Simple Supper once a month, it gives many different Brother Knights working together or a Brother Knight and his spouse an opportunity to showcase their cooking talents and favor recipes. This gives us a variety of meals cooked with a lot of Tender Loving Care, and sometimes, the chefs forget it is a simple supper and really prepare a fantastic feast. PURPOSE OF THE EVENT Unlike many events that Council #9053 does to raise money to fund and support our charitable endeavors, these simple suppers are not to make money, but rather, to bring our families together around a great meal. One of the main menu features of these simple suppers is that Brother Knights do not discuss council business. These evenings are paramount in our mission to provide an opportunity for Brother Knights to bring their families together and socialize having good food and fun. PLANNING After one of our families volunteers to host and prepare the simple supper, the hosting family,chef(s) for the evening, meets with Council #9053 s Kitchen Manager to discuss and decide what supplies that they will need, and the host family may need a couple of days for shopping and preparing of the meal. With all the preliminary details addressed, Council #9053 Communications/Newsletter Chairman, Brother Tom Foglesong, sends an asking for waiters, kitchen help and desserts. PROMOTION Council #9053 sets the last Wednesday of each month (September through May) as simple supper night. Brother Tom Foglesong sends out updates to reminder all the Brothers about the simple supper, as well as, the Council puts notices on its website and social media sites.

27 FAMILY ACTIVITY REPORT If someone misses these announcements, Council #9053 also places announcements in the Church bulletin, makes announcements at the Friday night Bingo games, at Council meetings and at the Ladies Auxiliary meetings. Since Family is important, our Council goes the extra mile by placing a large sign on the main road in from of the Council Hall inviting the local community to the simple suppers. EVENT POSTSCRIPT Council #9053 thanks all the families who have hosted the simple suppers. Through their efforts, they keep the Family Core Concept as the backbone of the Church and the Knights of Columbus. Additionally, these simple suppers create a healthy rewarding challenge to each host family each host family wants to break the previous simple supper attendance record. After a delicious meal for only $7.00, most of attendees can t wait for the next simple supper. 33 CULTURE OF LIFE ACTIVITY REPORT EVENT SUMMARY October is Respect Life month, and pro-life people have observed October as Respect life month since This year, marking the 45 th year, was no exception when forty-eight (48) Delawareans and Marylanders participated in a peaceful Life Chain on 01 October 2017(Sunday) in South Bethany Beach, Delaware from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM. The event opened with a prayer at 2:00 PM, and then the participants formed a "Life Chain" along Route 1 at South 9 th Street in South Bethany Beach, Delaware. The opening prayers took place outside the home of the organizer, Carolyn Marcello, who also provided signs. Some individuals brought their tasteful anti-abortion signs. Although most individuals stood for the ninety (90) minute period, some individuals, who have difficulty standing for long periods, brought their own chairs. As in the past, people of all ages attended and showed their support for life. HIGHLIGHTS These are the words of Carolyn Marcello, Delaware State Director for Life Chain and the Bethany Beach, Delaware, Life Chain organizer (LifeChain.Net(work)): I went up to St. Jude's in Lewes (Delaware) and got the idea to start one in South Bethany where I live. It has been a blessing to have it all these years. I am not sure when Life Chain started in the area. We have two (2) chains a year: on Good Friday from 10 to 12 noon and on the first Sunday in October from 2-4 pm. We had 48 attend the October Life Chain. PURPOSE OF THE EVENT Life Chain is a peaceful and prayerful public witness of pro-life individuals standing for ninety (90) minutes of praying for our nation and for an end to abortion. The Christian Community makes a visual statement of solidarity that abortion kills children and that the Church supports the sanctity of human life from the moment of conception until natural death. Always being courteous, pro-life people get together at a public place, e.g., on a public sidewalk, alongside a busy road and/or intersection, holding pro-life signs which read abortion kills children, adoption: the loving option, or abortion hurts women, pray to end abortion. The idea is to spread the pro-life message and to be there as a resource in case anyone driving or walking by is pregnant and considering aborting their child.

34 CULTURE OF LIFE ACTIVITY REPORT PLANNING The local churches in Bethany Beach, Delaware, and the Ocean City, Maryland, areas receive notification when LifeChain.Net(work) plans to hold its Life Chain. Typcially, LifeChain.Net(work) has two (2) chains a year, Good Friday and the first Sunday in October. PROMOTION Once the local churches receive the notification/information about the exact date and time for the Life Chain (usually a month prior to the event), the pastors put it in the church bulletins EVENT POSTSCRIPT Carolyn Marcello was extremely gracious about providing pictures and information which became the basis of this report. Our Council thanks her. The Knights of Columbus Council #9053 and its individual members were proud to participate and assist in this successful event to help save the lives of unborn children in our community. 39 YOUTH ACTIVITY REPORT EVENT SUMMARY On 10 November 2017, the Knights of Columbus Ocean City Council #9053 held its annual Soccer Challenge at Most Blessed Sacrament (MBS) Catholic School. Ninety-two (92) boys and eighty-eight (88) girls from the first grade thru the eighth grade participated. The students began arriving at 8:30 AM, and the competition finished up at 3 PM. HIGHLIGHTS Twelve (12) Brother Knights from the Ocean City Council #9053 hosted the Council s 2017 Soccer Challenge for one hundred and eighty (180) children/players to demonstrate the most basic soccer skill the penalty kick. Although most of the participants were Catholic, they did not have to be Catholic to join in this event. All participants will receive a Certificate of Participation, and the winners of each age group will receive a Winner s Certificate and a soccer ball. Normally in the past, Council #9053 has distributed the awards after the weekly Mass which the children attend on Thursday morning, but because of scheduling conflicts, MBS Catholic School has deferred the award ceremony. PURPOSE OF THE EVENT Since the early days of the Knights of Columbus founding, it has worked to provide for the welfare of young people and to protect the orphans of its members. Through sponsoring sports activities such as this annual Soccer Challenge, Council #9053 looks to foster the development of young people as they follow their paths to adulthood, and at the same time, sporting events like this provide the possibilities for participants to advance to the Knights of Columbus district, regional and state competitions. PLANNING To achieve the Council s goals of providing good, wholesome fun for the youth in our area, as well as, developing a foundation of honesty and good and competitive social skills for adulthood, Council #9053 begins planning its annual soccer challenge several months in advance. Council 9053 s Charity Committee chairman, Brother Tom Herwig, and its Youth Program Manager, Joe Hook, coordinate the Council s ordering and distribution of the Soccer Challenge materials from Supreme using either the SC-KIT Form from the Report Form Booklet or using the online form on the Supreme website at:

40 YOUTH ACTIVITY REPORT Council 9053 s Youth Program Manager, Brother Joe Hook, and his Assistant Program Manager, Gary Waesche, solicited the help of other Brothers at the Council s monthly meeting and via s which our Communications Chairman, Brother Tom Foglesong, sent to each council member. Because Council #9053 uses MBS Catholic School s soccer field on which to hold the Soccer Challenge, Brothers Joe Hook and Tom Herwig coordinate with MBS Catholic School s Principal, Mark Record, and MBS Athletic Director, John Haskell, to ensure the availability of the school grounds. Also since the Soccer Challenge usually occurs on a Friday, Brother Joe needs to coordinate the challenge on a day that MBS does not have classes. Early on 10 November 2017 before any children arrive, Brother Joe and fellow Knights had to arrive at MBS Catholic School to set-up the nets, get the soccer balls organized and set-up the registration desk. PROMOTION As time drew near for annual Soccer Challenge, Council #9053 advertises the date and time for the Soccer Challenge via announcements at the local Masses, in the Church bulletins of the local Catholic churches (Holy Savior, St. John Newman and,st. Luke s), at MBS Catholic School, as well as, the Council put notices in its monthly newsletter, Knight Times. EVENT POSTSCRIPT As evident by the number of children who attended this year s Soccer Challenge, this event was a great success, and all of the children who attended had an enjoyable, fun-filled day. Unfortunately because of timely this year, Council #9053 still needs to finalize the award date with MBS s principal, and therefore, Council #9053 has decided not to publish the winners names at this time. Council #9053 would like to thank MBS Catholic School Principal, Mark Record, and MBS Athletic Director, John Haskell, for their continued support and use the school property/soccer field to hold this annual competition.
