1 WELLINGTON CHURCH We welcome into the life and worship of our congregation all people whatever their ethnic origin, gender, background, age, sexual orientation, mental or physical ability. We affirm our diversity and the dignity of each person. Sunday, 18th February 2018 Welcome one another as Christ has welcomed you, for the glory of God. (Romans 15:7) Love one another, as I have loved you. (John 15:12) First Sunday in Lent - Sacrament of the Lord s Supper Opening Voluntary: O wie selig Brahms (Happy are they that are steadfast in the faith) Introit: Make me a clean heart Welcome and Notices Opening responses: In the beginning, before, time, before people, before the world began, God was. Here and now, among us, beside us, clearer than air, closer than breathing, God is. G Thalben Ball In all that is to come, when we have turned to dust and human knowledge has been completed, God will be. Not despairing of earth, but delighting in it, not condemning the world, but redeeming it through Jesus Christ, in the power of the Holy Spirit, God is, God was, God will be. Hymn 617 Great and deep the Spirit s purpose
2 Prayer of Approach Prayer of the Day (said together): Saviour of the World, you saw Satan masquerading as an angel of light and shunned him. Give us wisdom to discern, behind each subtle temptation, the ploy of the powers of darkness; and in the face of all that is hellishly attractive, help us to discern and choose the will of God. Amen. Hymn 527 Lord, make us servants of your peace 1 Peter Beloved, do not be surprised at the fiery ordeal that is taking place among you to test you, as though something strange were happening to you. But rejoice in so far as you are sharing Christ s sufferings, so that you may also be glad and shout for joy when his glory is revealed. If you are reviled for the name of Christ, you are blessed, because the spirit of glory, which is the Spirit of God, is resting on you. But let none of you suffer as a murderer, a thief, a criminal, or even as a mischief-maker. Yet if any of you suffers as a Christian, do not consider it a disgrace, but glorify God because you bear this name. For the time has come for judgement to begin with the household of God; if it begins with us, what will be the end for those who do not obey the gospel of God? And, If it is hard for the righteous to be saved, what will become of the ungodly and the sinners? Therefore, let those suffering in accordance with God s will entrust themselves to a faithful Creator, while continuing to do good. Mark In those days Jesus came from Nazareth of Galilee and was baptized by John in the Jordan. And just as he was coming up out of the water, he saw the heavens torn apart and the Spirit descending like a dove on him. And a voice came from heaven, You are my Son, the Beloved; with you I am well pleased. And the Spirit immediately drove him out into the wilderness. He was in the wilderness for forty days, tempted by Satan; and he was with the wild beasts; and the angels waited on him Now after John was arrested, Jesus came to Galilee, proclaiming the good news of God, and saying, The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God has come near; repent, and believe in the good news. 2
3 Hymn 354 O Love, how deep, how broad, how high! Sermon Hymn 348 Praise the One who breaks the darkness (children enter and the offering is presented; servers come to the table) Holy Communion: Invitation to the Table The Story Eucharistic Prayer: The Lord be with you And also with you Lift up your hearts We lift them to the Lord Let us give thanks to the Lord our God It is right to give our thanks and praise the song of the church on earth and in heaven: Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might Heaven and earth are full of your glory Hosanna in the highest Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord Hosanna in the highest. 4 Anthem: Bread of the world Alan Bullard Bread of the world, in mercy broken, Wine of the soul, in mercy shed, By whom the words of life were spoken, And in whose death our sins are dead. Look on the heart by sorrow broken, Look on the tears by sinners shed; And be your feast to us the token That by your grace our souls are fed. Prayer and Lord s Prayer: Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name Your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Save us from the time of trial and deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power and the glory are yours, now and forever. Amen. Hymn 520 Ye who the name of Jesus bear Benediction Closing Voluntary: Fugue in C S S Wesley Organist: John Turner 4
