2 Deacon s Page August 16, 2015 JMJ Deacon Paul s Corner Sunday Scripture Note The first reading speaks of a glorious banquet offered to those who love wisdom. It is a promise of the great blessings that will come with the Messiah. We see it as a foreshadowing of the Eucharist, and of the heavenly banquet. Finally it invites us to prepare to hear the Gospel. In the Gospel the Eucharistic theme of John 6 continues. Language shifts from eating and drinking physical food to the Spiritual food of Christ s body and blood. But there is even more to this flesh (body) and blood is a Hebrew phrase used to refer to the whole person. Thus, it is not just Christ s body and blood we must take, but also his entire person his word and teachings as well as the Eucharist. In the liturgy of the Word we are fed with divine revelation and teachings; in the Liturgy of the Eucharist, we are fed with the flesh and blood of Christ. As Christians we hunger for much; however, only God can satisfy our deepest hunger. ~ deacon paul Aug 21 Aug 23 Sept 5 Sept 13 Sept 20 Nov 1 Dec 14 Aug 9 Notes Amount Offertory Saturday Offertory Sunday Other/ Designated Save the Dates 2015 Ladies Guild Meeting Fr. 5 El Camino de Santiago de Compostela by Fr. Larry Rice, CSP During the summer travel season many people of faith will take the opportunity to not just travel but to go on a pilgrimage. For the last thousand years or so, one of the most popular pilgrimage destinations has been the route to the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela in Galicia in northwestern Spain. According to legend, the cathedral is the resting place of St. James the Elder, one of the first apostles of Jesus Christ. By the twelfth century, the pilgrimage to the apostle s resting place had become one of the most popular travel routes in the Middle Ages. Known as El Camino de Santiago de Compostela, the pilgrimage route was described in a book called the Codex Calixtinus, which is widely regarded as the world s first travel guide. Pilgrims travel various paths across northern Spain to reach the Cathedral of St. James, and along the route there are lodgings and hostels, established specifically for those on pilgrimage. Today, the Camino is still traveled by thousands of pilgrims each year. Along the pilgrimage routes, pilgrims document their progress by collecting stamps in a sort of passport called a credential. In order to receive a certificate of completion of the pilgrimage at the cathedral, pilgrims are required to walk at least the last 100 km, about 60 miles. For more information on the Camino to Santiago to Compostela, you can go to the website The Camino on Film You can also experience the Camino on film, both in the 2014 documentary Walking the Camino: Six Ways to Santiago and in The Way, writer-director Emilio Estevez s 2011 drama. Catholic News Service s film reviewer John Mulderig described The Way as a thinking person s road movie. The film follows a quartet of central characters along the ancient pilgrimage route as it conducts viewers through a reflective, and ultimately rewarding, exploration of elemental themes. To find information on screenings of Walking the Camino: Six Ways to Santiago or to purchase a copy of the film, visit The Way is available on Blu-Ray and DVD and via Amazon Prime s streaming service.
