6 James, son of Zebedee, was one of the Twelve Apostles of Jesus. He was brother of St. John the Apostle. One of only three witnesses of Jesus Transfiguration. Author of the Book of James. Martyred by Herod Agrippa in 44 AD. The Patron Saint of Spain; according to tradition, his remains are held in Santiago de Compostela. The feast day of St James is celebrated on 25 July.

9 The traditional symbol of the Camino de Santiago. Is metaphorical: The grooves in the shell, coming together at a single point represent the various routes pilgrims traveled arriving at one location: the tomb of James in Santiago de Compostela. Also is a metaphor for the pilgrim: As the waves of the ocean wash scallop shells up on the shores of Galicia, God's hand also guided the pilgrims to Santiago.
