St Andrews - Lhanbryd & Urquhart Church Magazine SALU Summer 2013 To Know - To Love - To Serve Minister Rev Andrew J Robertson Tel:

From the Manse Dear Friends I am sure you will agree with me - it is always encouraging when visitors and holidaymakers come to Lhanbryde during the holiday season to join us in worship on a Sunday Morning. Their presence always acts as a reminder that we are part of something bigger - bigger than our parish, bigger than the presbytery of Moray and even bigger than the Church of Scotland. In fact we are part of a very large and diverse group of brothers and sisters that span the globe - the Church of Christ. At SALU - the first half of the year has been an active one - alongside the usual full calendar of church activities, we have had a Stewardship campaign, the formation of our monthly Messy church, a children s holiday club, a community banner project run by the girls at the Thursday craft group and even had time to let our hair down at a drama workshop. I think over the summer season it is time to take a rest although that does not mean stopping church for the summer months - when Jesus rested, he spent time with his Father - rest with God gave Jesus time to pray and reflect. This summer we have all age services running throughout the summer months and these have been specifically designed to accommodate families. The service will have three parts - a starter to explore the idea - a main course aimed to stimulate thought and feed our appetite to learn more about God, and for those that want to desert - children s and parents if they wish may go through to the hall for games and fellowship - those that remain in the sanctuary will be given further ideas to explore and takeaway. The themes for July and August are: Mountain Climbing A place of testing A place of rules A place of power A place of Sacrifice The folly of three very foolish ideas You can hide from God When in trouble don t ask for help God wants to punish people

These services are designed to be fun and family friendly. For those who are fortunate enough to be going on holiday either home or abroad - I encourage you to visit a church to join the congregation in worship. This I have always found to be an uplifting experience - as it serves a reminder of the bond that links us all in Christ- no matter the language or the denomination. It will also encourage them as a congregation - I look forward hearing of the new brothers and sisters that you engage with on your journeys. Please relay the best wishes of the people of St Andrews- Lhanbryd and Urquhart Church. Peace and blessings Andrew YOUNG CHURCH, TIC TACS & CRÈCHE Thank you We owe a big thank-you to all the leaders in crèche, Young Church & Tic Tacs who ve committed a great deal of time and energy to supporting and encouraging all the youngsters in the church family. Church family life would be so much poorer without you! The young people in church continue to enjoy meeting during the regular Sunday morning services. The younger ones have been looking at the Old Testament prophet Elisha, seeing how God provided for people in history and still does today. With the teenagers, discussions around the topic What is truth? have been wide ranging and thought provoking - is truth relative, or an absolute thing? Sunday 16 th June We re having an all-together service on Sun 16 th June when we ll mark the moving on of our youngsters. This year we ll be making special presentations to those who are either starting or leaving school, and encouraging all of the young people to continue to be part of our church family week by week.

Summer Our usual groups will be meeting in June, and then whilst the summer holidays are a welcome break from school, we re keen not to give the impression that church has a 6-week break too. It s good to be able to give the regular leaders some time off, so we ve decided to have a slightly different style of service over July & August. There will be variety in the services, and a session of games/crafts/refreshments in the hall during the second part of each Sunday. So we ll look forward to seeing everyone, however old or young you are during July and August. If you d like to offer to help out during the summer sessions, and have been through the church s Child Protection disclosure, please speak to Fiona who ll be delighted to put your name down. Sunday 25 th August will see the usual programme of crèche, Young Church and Tic Tacs back in place. Fiona Cumming Can you guess who we are? The display above shows all the young people in Tic Tacs in silhouette form. It was created by each individual lying down on the piece of paper in turn and being drawn round. Hair and clothes were then added to create each individuals personal style. Some people have words and symbols added to their clothes which all have Christian relevance to them. We have had a number of positive comments on the display already, but we now invite you to come and try and guess who is who on the wall! Kirsty Cumming

Parachute games, fun, laughter, crafts, chat, singing, bible stories and fabulous food was what we enjoyed at our very first Messy Church. It was wonderful to see so many families arrive to join in with the celebration and the afternoon flew by. Our next Messy Church is on the 16 th June from 4-6pm in Lhanbryde Community Centre and we are looking forward to lots of crafts and activities based this time on the story of Joseph, ending with another family meal this time a picnic! Look forward to seeing you there!

SALU Website SALU has a new website - Like ourselves the SALU website will always be a work in progress, it will never be finished this side of Christ's return - in geek speak this means it will always be in a beta state. However being a website always in a beta state is not a bad thing - it s how it should be! The website is a way of thinking, creating, and living. It will always be unfinished as the church s work is unfinished. This website is there to provide information on SALU for our congregation, visitors and people who are thinking about joining us. The website is a showroom to the world and aims to reflect our rural church in the heart of the community and the work she is engaged in. I encourage you to follow the activity of the site and in particular the blogs. This is easily done by subscribing. All you need to do is put your in the area on the bottom left of the page and click follow. Any time there is a new post it will appear in your inbox. Hot off the press. One click and you can follow the minister s blog, the notes from the service, Messy Church and get the order of service and notices. Also Simone has just completed her blog from the General Assembly.

There is a feedback area so we can try and improve the site it s completely anonymous so please take the time and fill in. The website can be accessed via computers and mobile devices. For computers Internet Explorer does not work well - try Firefox, Google Chrome or Safari. If glitches appear on your ipad then clear the cache! Happy surfing Grant Cumming The Fellowship Group plan to have a Congregational Coffee Morning on Saturday 10 th August at 10am in the Church Hall. Donations of baking etc. will be gratefully received for the Stall, either between 2pm - 3pm on the afternoon of Friday 9 th, or on the morning of Saturday 10 th from 9am. All proceeds to Church Funds.

Guild News The Guild has recently completed Session 2012/2013, apart from the annual outing which is planned for the afternoon of 11 th June. Under the leadership of Jane Rossetter, the Committee had planned a programme appropriate to the Guild Theme of A Faith to Proclaim, and the Discussion Topic Being Christian in today s world, and it had given a good balance of food for thought and lighter moments. Jane will continue as Guild Convener next Session, and the new Committee have already met to plan the programme for , on the theme A Fellowship to Build. Ruth will have the syllabus ready for distribution prior to the start of the new Session, and there will be copies available for those of you who expressed an interest in becoming a member of the Guild at the Stewardship Gatherings, and any others who would like to have one. The first meeting will be on Tuesday 17 th September. Stamp Appeal Money made from stamps in 2012 was 3.300, which went to the Agricultural College in Lebanon. This year the money will go to Living Water project in Horni Krepa in the Czech- Moravian Highlands where the Evangelical Church have acquired an old school campus in 2008 and turned it into a centre for environmental education for all ages. They are extending it and opening up an old well to make a lake. Further literature is on the board in Church and also in the small hall. Please remember to leave sufficient paper around the stamps so they are not damaged. Thank you - Doris

Heart and Soul 2013 Thousands of people headed for the Capital on Sunday 19 th May to attend the 3 rd event of its kind in Princes Street Gardens. Within half an hour of getting off the train at Waverly, Susan and I had bumped into Janet Whyte and then Simone. The Stands were already beginning to get busy as we headed for the Ross Pavilion for the Opening Service which was being led by The Guild. Although it was primarily a Service of Worship, the opportunity was also taken to promote the work of the Guild. We stayed there for a time after the Service to listen to some Fischy Music, before making our way along the Stalls, of which there were more than ever. Quite a number of them were promoting the work of organisations such as Christian Aid, Crossreach, Alternativity etc., but this time there were stands from a good number of Churches, too. We then met up with Andrew, our minister, who was down for the week as a commissioner at the General Assembly. He had taken down 2 stones which Shirley had painted beautifully. One had our church logo with St Andrews - Lhanbryd and Urquhart on it (along with our new website address) while the other was decorated on behalf of Buckie South and Enzie, where Andrew is currently Interim Moderator. He laid them at the foot of the cross in the display of Stonehaven and Fetteresso Church, creating a link with them, and greatly pleasing the ladies there. We saw several members of the Billes family on our travels, Sheila and her daughter Heather, and several Guild ladies from different parts of Scotland, whom Susan and I have got to know over the years. Chats with those we met were kept shorter than we would have liked, because there was so much to see. I was also pleased to have a chat with Peter Nielson, who was the inspirational leader at St. Ninians, Crieff when Isobel Weir and I did Elders Training around 20 years ago. He is a good friend of David and Maggie Lunan. The Closing worship, as ever, was a memorable experience, packed as it was with no empty seats to be seen. Once again, this had been a very positive shop window for the Church of Scotland, and we were so glad we had managed to be there. Meg Anderson

CHALLENGED!! How does faith enrich lives? How does your faith influence your life? Does it impact on people around you? Can you tell us about your faith journey? Interesting questions!? A couple of weeks ago I received an exciting letter with an invitation to visit Primary 6 at St Sylvester s School. It is the class of Diane Kirk, a member of our church. I could hardly wait! The children didn t want to discuss Maths, English, Geography or Science. They didn t want me to help with knitting, baking or painting; nor did they suggest we could sing or make music together. No! We would like you to focus on how your faith influences you and impacts on your community was the invitation. Apart from the questions at the beginning of this piece of writing we talked about Jesus, his life and what we can learn. We discussed prayer. (The youngsters had a lot of questions) When, where and how do we pray and the importance of listening were all important. The children happily shared their thoughts about people whose lives radiate faith and pointing to many of their classmates and saying why. There was a lot of laughter and fun! I am always amazed (and really by now I shouldn t be) at how much children influence our lives and how much we can learn from them. Their honesty, enthusiasm and questioning minds are totally inspiring. I thank God for the wonderful experience of being in a classroom again, with these fantastic children; it was uplifting, invigorating and renewing. But! I was also challenged! How often do we as adults engage with one another, in such a way, about our faith? June Taylor

THRIFT SHOP - opened 19 th April 1983 Memories were shared when past and present volunteer workers of the Thrift Shop met, along with its founder Maggie Lunan, in the Sunninghill Hotel, Elgin on Friday 26 th April for the 30 th celebration lunch. Lots of stories and laughter were heard while we dined. The Sunninghill Hotel is used to the Thrift Shop Ladies as we usually have 2 lunches together during the year. The first days of the Thrift Shop were so different from now. They were held in Wm. Watson s workshop and the shop was not so organised as today. The ladies who worked there then did have some wonderful tales to tell. Things did change once the move was made to the Manse garage. The back area was used to sort and price stock. More space was required so the back shop came in to being with the stock being taken to Helen and George Fordyce s house/garage. The two areas in the shop stock the following items: Front shop clothes, shoes, soft toys, bags, jewellery, cds, dvds etc. while the back shop has toys, books, jigsaws/games, crockery, glassware, lamps, ornaments, etc. It really is worth a visit - opening times Tuesday am and Thursday pm.
