3 Jared Hamilton Graduates Andover Newton Theological School May 19, 2012 On Saturday, May 19th, Jared Hamilton graduated from Andover Newton Theological School in Newton Centre, Massachusetts, culminating four years of instruction at the seminary. Rev. John Hughes and Rev. Llewellyn Smith attended the ceremony. As part of Jared s seminary training, our church formed a Teaching Parish Committee to oversee Jared on site parish work for a two year period. The T.P.C. used an action-reflection model to help Jared with his three objectives: 1) to learn to create vitality by ministering to youth, through teaching Sunday morning Middle School Youth Group, Confirmation Class, and planning recreation and spiritual events for youth. 2) to learn to minister in the context of liturgical year, through participation in liturgy with Rev. John Hughes, preparing the services for Christmas Pageant and Christmas Eve, as well as, preaching on Christmas Eve. 3) to learn to contribute to a staff team, the C.E. Committee and other committees, through meeting with Rev. John Hughes bi-weekly, staff meetings when available, and attending Christian Education Committee monthly meetings. First Parish Church also paid for outside supervisors to help Jared reflect theological, one hour per week, on his developing career as a minister. Jared was helped to integrate his ministry at First Parish Church by attending Practicum groups, led by seminary professors, with seminarians from other Teaching Parish settings. Jared and the Teaching Parish Committee filed Mid-Year Progress Reports and Final Evaluations. Our Church has provided a rich, thoughtful setting for Jared to integrate his seminary coursework with a practical, hands-on ministry. Jared s graduation marks an important step in his maturing for ordained ministry. Jared first came to First Parish Church, Congregational in the fall of 2009 as Youth Director. He and his wife, Leah, joined the church on December 6, Their daughter, Camille Rose, was baptized during the October 17, 2010 worship service. Leah sings in our choir. Congratulations Jared Hamilton on your graduation! Congratulations First Parish Church for helping to make it possible!

10 PAGE 10 THE CHURCH BELL JUNE 2012 CE Committee continued These are just a few of the many successes this year. We are very gratefully for to our many volunteers who serve as teachers, lead our children in singing, and assist in the nursery. All of this has been achieved under the leadership of CE Director Priscilla Duda. The CE committee recommended, and the Church Council has approved, that the CE Director s hours be increased to reflect the actual amount of time that is required to successfully run the programs and produce the excellent results we ve seen over the past 2 years. The CE Director has worked very hard to make this all happen and we want to ensure the hours are sufficient to keep this program growing, and attract new Sunday School families to our church. Respectfully, CE Committee MAY MEETING Church Council met on May 12. After an opening prayer by Rev. Hughes the Council received a presentation from the Christian Ed. Committee on the accomplishments and plans for Christian Education at First Parish Church. Nancy Petersen and Alice Walker both spoke for the CE committee and offered a very positive picture of the growth and activity in the Sunday School over the past few years. At the request of the Committee, and after discussion, the Council voted unanimously to alter the Job Description for the Sunday School Director to allow for an increase in hours, recognizing the fact that our Director (Priscilla Duda) has been consistently, and effectively, working more than the previously allotted hours. In separate business, the date of the Annual Meeting was formally set for June 17 after Sunday services. Council members expressed some concern about the fact that this will be Father s Day but scheduling in June offered no better alternatives. Child Care will be provided, and the Council and your Moderator urge members to attend the meeting and support the vitality of the Church. Although the Worship Committee recommendations had been on the Council agenda, this discussion was tabled until the next Council Meeting. The Worship Committee was an ad hoc group formed last year to gather and present suggestions for Sunday Worship Services. This Church Council meeting included reports from the Committees and Officers of the Church. A condensed version of the reports on activities follows:

11 CC continued Treasurer and Financial Secretary reported briefly and noted that everything was proceeding smoothly. Rev. Hughes presented the Pastor s Report and noted that Jared Hamilton will be graduating from Andover Newton Theological School on May 19 and that we can look forward to hosting an Ecclesiastical Council in the Spring of 2013 as Jared moves toward Ordination. Membership and Growth suggested that the church move to inactive status those young adults who have been absent from Manchester for a considerable time, and are no longer able to actively participate in the Church. Council approved the move to Inactive status of 26 confirmands who have been absent from Manchester for 2 years or more. (Inactive members are still members of the church, and membership can be re-activated by request). Missions Committee reported on the Jazz for Joy Benefit Concert, and the Council greeted the report with a round of applause for Alice Eastland, and for the work of Rebecca Shrimpton, the Missions Committee, our guest musicians, and everyone who made this event a success. Missions also reported on another volunteer effort at the Open Door and on funds disbursed this month. Christian Education reported on a number of activities, including a successful retreat at the Crane Estate that was held earlier in the month. Upcoming is Children s Sunday, which will be followed by a luncheon and a presentation by Nancy Petersen on their family trip to China. Rev. Lelly Smith reported on the diligent work of the Nominating Committee. This is a busy time of the year for them, and they still have a few Committee seats to fill before the annual meeting. George Nickless reported for Delegates, who attended the 4/22 Andover/Essex annual meeting. Paul Driscoll reporting for the Trustees, said that the Steeple work is completed, and was greatly helped by the Meeting House Endowment Fund. Additional work on the clock face is recommended. Trustees are concerned that we need to paint the church, and this will be a significant expense. The Music Committee was represented by Maggie Michaels, who was pleased to report that Don Dunn, our organist and choir director, will be attending the Mass. Choral Directors meeting at Gordon College in July. For the Council and with thanks to all the Members who participated, Richard Smith, Chair, Church Council

13 Missions Committee The Jazz for Joy benefit concert for the Grace Center held in the church sanctuary on May 6 th was a success by any measure. The benefit gave a substantial funding boost to the Grace Center in Gloucester and helps support day services essential for Cape Ann's adult homeless and other people in crisis. The concert attracted an audience of more than 150 people from Manchester and the greater Cape Ann community and had broad interfaith support. The benefit was widely promoted by the North Shore press and created awareness for the Grace Center's mission. In addition to ticket purchases there were many outright contributions to the Grace Center. Opening the church doors for the Jazz for Joy benefit demonstrated First Parish Church's long tradition of concern for neighbors. In Rev. John Hughes words, the concert enabled the church to "...share the Grace Center's hope for a new sense of belonging for people who desperately need to join in and be received by a caring community willing to serve them." The Missions Committee is grateful to all the church members who hung posters, sold tickets, lent sound equipment, set up the church as a concert hall, prepared refreshments, greeted concert goers, ushered, cleaned, and restored the sanctuary to worship space. Jazz for Joy showcased the talents of a dozen stellar musicians. A concert recording is posted on the FPC website so that anyone who was not able to attend Jazz for Joy has the chance to participate in the spontaneity and excitement of the live performances. Those who were in the audience can enjoy the concert again. Special thanks go to Rebecca Shrimpton for the amazing night. Her professional expertise and versatility was in evidence at every point. Rebecca not only persuaded so many top-tier entertainers to appear but made the concert work thematically with her own vocal marvels. First Parish Church is very fortunate to hear Rebecca sing and add joy to our Sunday morning services. May Donations: The Missions Committee voted to contribute $ each to Beverly Bootstraps, Healing Abuse Working for Change (HAWC), and the Plummer Home for Boys. In addition, $ was donated to Heifer International to support the Sunday School and Youth Group effort. The Open Door The next Open Door Community Meal is scheduled for June 20. Volunteers are needed to prepare food and to cook, serve, and clean. Please send to Alice Eastland alice@shoreview.com or leave a message at (978) if you want to sign on. Time slots are available in the Chapel kitchen in Manchester if you are unable to go to the Open Door in Gloucester.
