7 Welcome to Grace Café Grace Café (ASUMC s outreach to folks experiencing food insecurity) is open every Sunday through the end of June. After a brief period of faith sharing, those gathered will enjoy a homecooked meal hosted by volunteer groups. 195 people attended last week s Grace Café. Marg Donnelly and family provide today s dinner. There are still openings for hosts to bring food and prepare a meal for about 200 people. If you know of a group that would like to assist in this important mission, please have them contact the church office at or Darlene DiDomineck and Carmen Francesco at gracecafephilly@gmail.com Greeters, servers and clean-up crew are needed and always welcome. A BIG THANK YOU FROM GRACE CAFE! Grace Cafe gives thanks to Foods on First for donating the Grace cafe meal this past Sunday! We served over 195 guests a delicious and nutritious locally made meal. About the initiative: Foods on First (located a half block from ASUMC) is a family owned restaurant dedicated to giving back to the Philadelphia community. The partnership between Grace Cafe and Food on First serves as a pilot project for businesses and restaurants to take the lead on providing food for those who are food insecure in the Philadelphia community. Grace Cafe and Arch Street UMC are immensely grateful to the family and staff at Foods on First. 8 I Want to be Part of History That was a POWER member's response to the question What is motivating you to attend the June 20 rally for fair funding for public education in Harrisburg? at a recent POWER meeting. If that sounds unrealistic you should know that a lot is happening in the PA state legislature that could mean an end to education apartheid, where skin color affects the funding that a school receives. Several legislators who had not been sympathetic to correcting a racist funding method are now actually proposing legislation do just that. We need to support them in actually going through with it and showing their colleagues that NOW IS THE TIME for fair and adequate funding for ALL of Pennsylvania s children. POWER will build on a solid history of achievement for children. You should be part of it! Please mark your calendar for June 20 and join us on a luxury bus to Harrisburg. Arch St. reads The Indigenous History of the United States by Roxanne Dunbar-Ortiz! On Sunday June 3rd, the United Methodist Women will host a book discussion of The Indigenous History of the United States and we hope you will join us. Get your copy from Margaret Harris today or next Sunday! Why should you read this book? Well, it was the 2015 Recipient of the American Book Award! What is it? The following is from Amazon s review: The first history of the United States told from the perspective of indigenous peoples- Today in the United States, there are more than five hundred federally recognized Indigenous nations comprising nearly three million people, descendants of the fifteen million Native people who once inhabited this land. The centuries-long genocidal program of the US settler-colonial regimen has largely been omitted from history. Now, for the first time, acclaimed historian and activist Roxanne Dunbar-Ortiz offers a history of the United States told from the perspective of Indigenous peoples and reveals how Native Americans, for centuries, actively resisted expansion of the US empire. In An Indigenous Peoples History of the United States, Dunbar-Ortiz adroitly challenges the founding myth of the United States and shows how policy against the Indigenous peoples was colonialist and designed to seize the territories of the original inhabitants, displacing or eliminating them. And as Dunbar-Ortiz reveals, this policy was praised in popular culture, through writers like James Fenimore Cooper and Walt Whitman, and in the highest offices of government and the military. Shockingly, as the genocidal policy reached its zenith under President Andrew Jackson, its ruthlessness was best articulated by US Army general Thomas S. Jesup, who, in 1836, wrote of the Seminoles: The country can be rid of them only by exterminating them. Spanning more than four hundred years, this classic bottom-up peoples history radically reframes US history and explodes the silences that have haunted our national narrative.

10 Congregational Conversation and Community Meal Join Pastor Robin and several other members and friends of ASUMC on Tuesday, May 29 th (6pm) in the chapel for a potluck dinner and dialogue about the Commission on the Way Forward. The Commission on a Way Forward was proposed by the Council of Bishops and approved by the 2016 General Conference to do a complete examination and possible revision of every paragraph of the Book of Discipline concerning human sexuality and explore options that help to maintain and strengthen the unity of the church. Having received and considered the extensive work of the Commission on a Way Forward, the Council of Bishops will submit a report to the Special Session of the General Conference in 2019 that includes: All three plans (The Traditionalist Plan, The One Church Plan and the Connectional Conference Plan) for a way forward considered by the Commission and the Council. The Council s recommendation of the One Church Plan. An historical narrative of the Council s discernment process regarding all three plans. The Carnival de Resistance at Arch Street UMC The Carnival de Resistance is a two week-long experiment where 30 artist/activists try to live into the Christian values of justice, hospitality, and community. We host powerful ceremonial theater performances, engage in community projects, and live together in a sustainable eco-village where we share meals and tell stories.
