2 Our Mission Welcome to The Episcopal Church of the Holy Communion, a welcoming and diverse community seeking to walk in the way of Jesus and to reveal Christ s reconciling love in our city, nation, and world. Can I receive Communion? Yes. Whoever you are, wherever you find yourself on the journey of faith, you are welcome to receive the bread and wine made holy. Are children welcome? Yes. Children are invited to participate actively in the service. Coloring pages, crayons, and books are at the entrances to the church. Nursery care is available 9:00am - 12:00pm for children ages 0-4; the Nursery is located through the lounge. Changing tables are located in the downstairs bathrooms and the Nursery. Our chapel is a sound-proof place to bring a crying infant, or a boisterous toddler, with windows into the church and speakers broadcasting the sound from the service. Children s Chapel begins after the Gospel reading. Children are invited to follow the procession to the front of the church and then make their way across the hall and into the lounge for Children s Chapel. They will return to their families at the Peace. How do I find my way around? There is a map by the Welcome Table in the main entryway (on the East side of the church). Also, feel free to ask anyone around you for directions, or help navigating the service. Where are the restrooms? There are single-user, all-gender restrooms in the Lounge, through the main (East) door, and through the next glass door. There are gendered, larger restrooms downstairs (take the elevator or stairs at the end of the long hallway in front of that entrance). Changing tables are available in the downstairs restrooms or in the nursery. Is there wheelchair accessibility? Yes. Our entrances have auto-open buttons, and our elevator is ADA compliant. Both the downstairs restrooms and one of the upstairs restrooms are accessible. Everyone is invited to remain seated during the service as they need. What about hearing assistance? We can help there, too. Hearing assistance devices are available from the ushers. Just ask. How do I get involved? If you begin by filling out a Connect Card in your pew, or at the Welcome Table, we d be glad to keep you up to date with all that goes on here. Then the Lord put out his hand and touched my mouth; and the Lord said to me, Now I have put my words in your mouth. In the synagogue at Nazareth, Jesus read from the book of the prophet Isaiah, and began to say, Today this scripture has been fulfilled in your hearing. All spoke well of him and were amazed at the gracious words that came from his mouth. They said, Is not this Joseph s son? He said to them, Doubtless you will quote to me this proverb, Doctor, cure yourself! And you will say, Do here also in your hometown the things that we have heard you did at Capernaum. And he said, Truly I tell you, no prophet is accepted in the prophet s hometown. But the truth is, there were many widows in Israel in the time of Elijah, when the heaven was shut up three years and six months, and there was a severe famine over all the land; yet Elijah was sent to none of them except to a widow at Zarephath in Sidon. There were also many lepers in Israel in the time of the prophet Elisha, and none of them was cleansed except Naaman the Syrian. When they heard this, all in the synagogue were filled with rage. 4

5 They got up, drove him out of the town, and led him to the brow of the hill on which their town was built, so that they might hurl him off the cliff. Presentation and Examination of the Candidates Bishop The Candidates will now be presented. Presenters Bishop Candidates We present these candidates for Confirmation, and these candidates to be received into this Communion. Do you reaffirm your renunciation of evil? I do. Bishop Do you renew your commitment to Jesus Christ? Candidate I do, and with God s grace I will follow him as my Savior and Lord. After all have been presented, the Bishop addresses the congregation, saying Will you who witness these vows do all in your power to support these persons in their life in Christ? People We will. The Bishop then says these or similar words Let us join with those who are committing themselves to Christ and renew our own baptismal covenant. The Baptismal Covenant Bishop Do you believe in God the Father? People I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. Bishop People Do you believe in Jesus Christ, the Son of God? I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord. He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit and born of the Virgin Mary. He suffered under Pontius Pilate, 5

He ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again to judge the living and the dead. Do you believe in God the Holy Spirit? I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Will you continue in the apostles teaching and fellowship, in the breaking of bread, and in the prayers? I will, with God s help. Will you persevere in resisting evil, and, whenever you fall into sin, repent and return to the Lord? I will, with God s help. Will you proclaim by word and example the Good News of God in Christ? I will, with God s help. Will you seek and serve Christ in all persons, loving your neighbor as yourself? I will, with God s help. Will you strive for justice and peace among all people, and respect the dignity of every human being? I will, with God s help. Prayers for the Candidates The Bishop then says to the congregation Let us now pray for these persons who have renewed their commitment to Christ. A period of silence follows. Then the Bishop says Almighty God, we thank you that by the death and resurrection of your Son Jesus Christ you have overcome sin and brought us to yourself, and that by the sealing of your Holy Spirit you have bound us to your service. Renew in these your servants the covenant you made with them at their Baptism. Send them forth in the power of that Spirit to perform the service you set 6

7 before them; through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen. The Candidates are then Confirmed, Received, or Renew their faith. When all the candidates have finished, the Bishop says to the people: Almighty and everliving God, let your fatherly hand ever be over these, your servants; let your Holy Spirit ever be with them; and so lead them in the knowledge and obedience of your Word, that they may serve you in this life, and dwell with you in the life to come; through Jesus Christ our Lord. The Ministry of the Table Enriching Our Worship The presider offers thanks to God for the grace and mercy made available to us in Christ. In response all sing: Sanctus LEVAS 253 9

10 The presider gives thanks to God for Christ s redeeming work, and remembers Jesus last supper with his disciples. The people are invited to respond to the words: We acclaim you, O Christ: Dying, you destroyed our death. Rising, you restored our life. Christ Jesus, come in glory! The presider concludes with prayer for the Holy Spirit to sanctify the bread and wine, and the gathered congregation. The Eucharistic prayer concludes with a plea for the coming of God s reign. Through Christ and with Christ and in Christ, by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, we worship you our God and Creator in voices of unending praise. Amen. 10

11 Great Amen We sing the Amen to the tune of Heleluyan. The Lord s Prayer Pray in the language you prefer: Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. Christ our Passover is sacrificed for us; Therefore let us keep the feast. Alleluia. Administration of the Sacrament All are invited to receive the Sacrament of the Holy Eucharist. Gluten-free wafers are available, on request, from the minister. On the left (West) side of the altar rail, the chalice is filled with white grape juice, as a sign of welcome for those who choose not to consume wine. On the right (East) side of the altar rail, the chalice is traditional red wine. Please feel free to cross the aisle for your preferred chalice. If you would prefer to receive a blessing, simply cross your arms over your chest. 11

Adult Forum - The Next Bishop of Missouri: A Holy Listening Session: Next Sunday, February 10 join us at 9:15am as Deborah Nelson-Linck, chair of the Diocesan Bishop Nominationg Committee will join us at Holy Communion. You will have a chance to have your voice heard in a listening session. Pilgrimage Course Begins: This class is especially suited for newcomers, but it is open to all who are exploring. The course will be held on four Sundays from February through May. The first class will be meeting February 10 12:15p-2:45pm in the Vestry room. Movie Screening & El Salvador Trip Meeting: February 17 at 4pm, join us for a meeting in preparation for the El Salvador Trip (June 3-10). The cost per person will be about $1,800 (including airfare). Scholarships are available. We will also be screening the movie Romero. Signup deadline is February 20th. Contact the rector to sign up and for more details. Laundry Love: On February 19th, our volunteers take over Classic Coin Laundry in UCity. We provide the quarters, the soap, food, kid s activities, homework help, and conversation. Volunteer orientation starts at 6:00pm.

14 Liturgical Changes During February- Black History Month 1. Music from the Black Church Tradition: You will notice many of the music selections come from Lift Every Voice and Sing, the Episcopal Church s African American hymnal. At 8am the Canticle is Tommy Dorsey s Precious Lord, Take my Hand, which was Dr. King s favorite hymn. At 10:30am our offertory hymn each Sunday will be We Shall Overcome, a standard in the Civil Rights era. At sung services, you ll also notice that the Sanctus (Holy Holy Holy) and the Gloria (the hymn of praise at the beginning of worship) come from the Black Church tradition. 2.Green frontal color and matching vestments: The ordinary time color most often used during the year, green reminds us that we are in the space between great feasts and fasts, when we focus on the challenges of faith in daily life. 3. Inclusive Language Our prayers, including the prayer for the Eucharist, the Lord s Supper, come from Enriching Our Worship. This collection of supplemental prayers has been approved by the General Convention of The Episcopal Church and our bishop. Holy Communion has chosen to use these prayers in ordinary time as our default mode because they are more inclusive of diverse perspectives and work to balance gendered pronouns for God. The altar flowers are given today in thanksgiving for the ministry of Bishop Smith by the Rector and Vestry. From our Diocesan Gun Violence Prevention Ministry: When we proclaim a principle in our public witness, it is important to practice it personally. Along with the Diocese of Missouri we ask all gun owners: Please ensure that all guns in your home are locked and secured against use by children or those suffering agonizing despair.
