All the time All the time God is Good! GATHERING AS GOD S PEOPLE * OPENING HYMNS Praise the Lord! God s Glories Show # 33 Great Are You, Lord # PRAYER OF CONFESSION We confess to You, our Lord and Savior, that we have betrayed and denied You, forgotten and doubted You. When our faith is tested, we wonder where You are. When we see injustice in the world, we often stand by, we turn our backs, we ignore the cries of others. We confess that again and again we deny You and betray You with our silence when we fail to proclaim Your Good News, when we fail to live out Your teachings and love our neighbor as ourselves. Forgive us, O God, and help us to truly repent. Help us to remember Your sacrifice, Your love, and to know Your forgiveness. In the name of the One who lived, who was crucified, and who lives again, Jesus the Messiah, we pray. Amen.
3 * ASSURANCE OF PARDON Hear the good news! Even in the face of betrayal and rebellion, even in the face of death and denial, even in the face of fear and despair, God's Grace knows no bounds. We ARE forgiven, we ARE called back into relationship, we ARE set back on the path that leads to the Realm of God. Thanks be to God. Amen. * RESPONSE Glory to God, Whose Goodness Shines on Me # 582 Glory to God, whose goodness shines on me, and to the Son, whose grace has pardoned me, and to the Spirit, whose love has set me free. As it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be. Amen. World without end, without end. Amen. World without end, without end. Amen. World without end, without end. Amen. As it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be. Amen. LISTENING TO GOD S WORD FIRST LESSON pg. 30 Matthew 26: 20-25, When it was evening, he took his place with the twelve; 21 and while they were eating, he said, Truly I tell you, one of you will betray me. 22 And they became greatly distressed and began to say to him one after another, Surely not I, Lord? 23 He answered, The one who has dipped his hand into the bowl with me will betray me. 24 The Son of Man goes as it is written of him, but woe to that one by whom the Son of Man is betrayed! It would have been better for that one not to have been born. 25 Judas, who betrayed him, said, Surely not I, Rabbi? He replied, You have said so. 45 Then he came to the disciples and said to them, Are you still sleeping and taking your rest? See, the hour is at hand, and the Son of Man is betrayed into the hands of sinners. 46 Get up, let us be going. See, my betrayer is at hand. 47 While he was still speaking, Judas, one of the twelve, arrived; with him was a large crowd with swords and clubs, from the chief priests and the elders of the people. 48 Now the betrayer had given them a sign, saying, The one I will kiss is the man; arrest him. 49 At once he came up to Jesus and said, Greetings, Rabbi! and kissed him. 50 Jesus said to him, Friend, do what you are here to do. Then they came and laid hands on Jesus and arrested him. SECOND LESSON pg. 31 Matthew 27: When morning came, all the chief priests and the elders of the people conferred together against Jesus in order to bring about his death. 2 They bound him, led him away, and handed
4 him over to Pilate the governor. 3 When Judas, his betrayer, saw that Jesus was condemned, he repented and brought back the thirty pieces of silver to the chief priests and the elders. 4 He said, I have sinned by betraying innocent blood. But they said, What is that to us? See to it yourself. 5 Throwing down the pieces of silver in the temple, he departed; and he went and hanged himself. ANTHEM The Servant Song arr. Tom Fettke THIRD LESSON pg. 118 Acts 1: In those days Peter stood up among the believers (together the crowd numbered about one hundred twenty persons) and said, 16 Friends, the scripture had to be fulfilled, which the Holy Spirit through David foretold concerning Judas, who became a guide for those who arrested Jesus 17 for he was numbered among us and was allotted his share in this ministry. 18 (Now this man acquired a field with the reward of his wickedness; and falling headlong, he burst open in the middle and all his bowels gushed out. 19 This became known to all the residents of Jerusalem, so that the field was called in their language Hakeldama, that is, Field of Blood.) 20 For it is written in the book of Psalms, Let his homestead become desolate, and let there be no one to live in it ; and Let another take his position of overseer. 21 So one of the men who have accompanied us during all the time that the Lord Jesus went in and out among us, 22 beginning from the baptism of John until the day when he was taken up from us one of these must become a witness with us to his resurrection. 23 So they proposed two, Joseph called Barsabbas, who was also known as Justus, and Matthias. 24 Then they prayed and said, Lord, you know everyone s heart. Show us which one of these two you have chosen 25 to take the place in this ministry and apostleship from which Judas turned aside to go to his own place. 26 And they cast lots for them, and the lot fell on Matthias; and he was added to the eleven apostles. 7 IN THE LIFE OF THE CHURCH August 26, 2018 WELCOME! It is good to have you in Worship service with us this morning! Please join us for a time of fellowship following the worship service in the Fellowship Hall. MESSAGE FROM PASTOR WENDY: It is very important to me that I set time aside to be available to meet with individuals. My pastoral work varies from day till evening depending upon meetings with various committees, Session, Deacons, Presbytery, Youth events, and outside mission work. I generally spend the early mornings seeking spiritual guidance at home as I develop my sermons and plan for our worship services. I plan to be in the office Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10:00 am to 1:00 pm if you should want to drop by to see me. However, the best way to connect with me is to make an appointment with me. Please call or text my cell phone, or me at wendyks.cpc@ggmail.com. You can always call Betsy in the church office at and leave me a message, but I may not respond to those messages quite as quickly. Please note that Monday is my Sabbath Day. If you have any concerns with our church, church services, or message that I share with the congregation, I encourage you to call me directly so we can talk about it. This is our church and it needs to be the avenue to Christ for all of us. THESE DAYS devotional booklets for July, August and September, both regular and large type, are available in the narthex. These are provided to you free of charge by the Deacons of the church.
8 TODAY is CENTS-ABILITY SUNDAY. This program supports the Food programs of our Presbytery. We hope you remembered to bring your donation at least five to ten cents for each meal you have eaten this past month and put it in the jar located in the narthex. Your support is appreciated. Put books to donate on the shelves in Fellowship Hall. NAMETAGS. Do you need a nametag? Betsy is compiling a list of folks who need a new nametag. If you don t have one, or if yours is missing or damaged, please contact the church office, , to get on the list. It takes a couple of weeks to have them made. GARDENING HELP NEEDED. As with most growing things, upkeep is needed, and even though our garden is small it needs tender loving care to keep it looking its best. If you could come weekly, great! Only monthly, still good! Please talk to Bob Avirett and he will work out a schedule with you. Our garden will certainly appreciate your efforts and so will the people who enjoy its loveliness.

10 PEDAL FOR PROTEIN. Presbytery of the Redwoods is embarking on the 5 th annual Pedal for Protein bike ride to support food bank pantries and food projects. The goal is to raise $40,000 to supply protein food for hungry children, seniors, homeless folk and lowincome working families. So far 24 riders, including our own Dave Standafer, are registered for one of the many rides in Humboldt County, starting at Bayside PC 9/16-21, with a one day local ride on 9/21 and in Santa Rosa at Knox PC on Saturday, 9/29. To donate and support Dave Standafer, go to On the left of the next screen go to Find a fundraiser, select David Standafer. On the right of this screen is the opportunity to Donate. Select an amount and the next screen will be for your Billing Information. Or use: Standafer (Bonnie tried both addresses and they both work.) Fliers are posted on the Mission Outreach board in Fellowship Hall. PEDAL FOR PROTEIN FAIR TRADE FAIRE TODAY. Get a jump on your Christmas shopping and support Dave Standafer s Pedal for Protein fundraising account by checking out the items for sale in the Fellowship Hall following worship service. 11 SAVE THE DATE!! CPC 75 th Anniversary Celebration November 18, 2018, 2:00 PM Tidbits from history: In September 1960, we had a Women s Association because we also had six women s circles: morning circles, Ruth and Esther; afternoon circle, Naomi; and evening circles, Grace, Martha and Rebecca. At that time each of them met at the home of a member, called a hostess. It appears these groups met weekly. In addition, the Association met monthly and included a program as part of its business. In that same September 1960 Bell, it ended with the following advice: our strength and comfort come only when God dwells ls in our souls working together with us. UPCOMING WORSHIP SCHEDULE: Sunday, September 2, 10:00 am worship Wendy preaching. Communion will be served. Sunday, September 9, 10:00 am worship Homecoming Sunday It s been a busy summer filled with trips, vacations and visits to family. If you took a break over the summer, we would love to see you back Sunday, September 9 th for Homecoming Sunday. Following worship we will have ice cream sundaes in the Fellowship Hall. It s a great time to invite others to join us, so bring a friend!
