1 The Mini-Messenger August 2018 Let s feed the hungry: Summer offers no break for food pantries. Hunger doesn t get the attention in the summer that it does during the holiday season, but, food pantries are still working to bring in donations and pass them out to the needy. Remember, August is canned tuna meat month. Sweet corn, peaches, squash, zucchini, tomatoes: What do these types of produce have in common? Attention gardeners food pantries DO accept fresh produce!! Please deliver these items directly to Doorstep. Sharon Koepke Doorstep Coordinator Courtyard Update Weeds are gone-all is ready and waiting for cooler weather to lay sod. Many thanks to Ann palmer for her oversight. Also to the Courtyard Committee members who kept our beautiful urns of flowers watered. -Deacon Annie NEWS FROM THE DAUGHTERS OF THE KING: Our next scheduled meeting is August 11, The Mary and Martha Chapter of the Daughters of the King meets at 10:30am on the second Saturday of each month except June and July. 2 Our Church Financially June 2018 Unfortunately, we are in our summer doldrums as our June pledge and offering donations fell short of budget by $4,145, with pledge donations accounting for most of the shortfall at $3,130. However, the GOOD news is that year-to-date through June our pledge and offerings donations remain ahead of budget by $8,700. This is due those who have paid all or part of their pledge ahead and that plate offerings (cash) are ahead of budget. Most all expenses are well within budget, though, as you would expect, our electric bill is about $1,100 over budget. As you may know, our electronic sign project should be about $4,000 under our original budget due to some physical location issues, which resulted in a one face sign rather than two faces as we first thought. Lynn Thompson, Treasurer The youth group is holding a Bake Sale/Car Wash on Saturday, August 4th from 10a 12p in St David's parking lot & the narthex. Come support the youth in raising funds for a future trip & activities. Donations of baked goods will be accepted at church office on Friday, August 3rd On Sat, August 11th, St. David's Youth /Children's ministry (grades 3rd-5th) will depart from Grace Cathedral at 2pm to go to Worlds of Fun for an evening. The younger group will need adult chaperones of 1 adult to 4 kids and will leave to return to Topeka at 8 pm. The Youth will meet to return around 10:15pm. Youth will need to be picked up at Grace Cathedral in the morning before or after church if they want to stay for a lock in that night, or they can be picked up after return. Transportation is being provided by a bus company to and from Worlds of Fun. Call Stacie or Kirsten to RSVP by July 25. Forward Day by Days are here! The newest edition of Forward Day by Day (August-October) is in the narthex for a donation of.50 or $1(please use envelope provided and put in offering plate or under church office door). 3 Successful Second Year Lunch Program Wraps Up For seven weeks St. David s served up food, fun and hospitality in an often rowdy demonstration of community love for one another. Daily starting on June 4 and ending on July 20, kids rushed in to gobble down their meal before they could get to the good stuff--- the activity area. A big favorite was our hidden treasure box stocked with fun trinkets. Kids intensely searched and then squealed with delight when they found the one they were hoping for. And thanks to the generosity and organization of Mary Jo Jackson every child coming to our program took home a favorite book to continue their summer reading. We also had several surprise visits from a friendly neighbor named Dennis who skillfully twisted skinny balloons into a quirky hats and perky animals that brought smiles to all. We are waiting for our final numbers of how many kids we served but we know that we served as many if not more as last year which should be about 500 children and 160 adults requiring about 600 volunteer hours from our parish. Quite an accomplishment! Our volunteers reported having as much fun as the kids and are already talking about doing this again next year. There is real joy in knowing that you are sharing God s love with others in an environment that nourishes their bodies while also nourishing their spirit. We can count this program as a win-win for all.
