3 August 14 th, 2016 Message: We Need Wheels on Our Prayers Big Idea: God wants us to partner with Him in prayer and action Passage: Nehemiah 2 Speaker: Pastor Scott Hill Wheels of sincerity Be authentic (Nehemiah 2:1-3) 2 Chronicles 20:6-9 Be spontaneous with prayer (Nehemiah 2:4) 2 Chronicles 20:12 Be specific with your need (Nehemiah 2:5-8) How long will this take? (Nehemiah 2:6) Whose permission do I need? (Nehemiah 2:7) What provision do I need? (Nehemiah 2:8) Wheels of clarity Be convinced of God s direction (Nehemiah 2:9-12) Build each other up in faith, love and hope (1Thessalonians 5:8-11) Respect and esteem our leaders (1Thessalonians 5:12-13) Be cautious before commitment (Nehemiah 2:13-16) Unified decision after a unified effort (Acts 16:6-10) Jesus on the unity of prayer (Matthew 18:18-20) Be committed regardless of opposition (Nehemiah 2:17-20) Knowing God s will produces commitment (Acts 21:13-14) Personal Application: 1. I will pray that our church will practice 1Thessalonians 5: I will pray that our leaders discern God s will for VBC.

4 OUR CHURCH S NEHEMIAH PROJECT We are facing financial pressures to finish our children s facilities and maintain our staff as we anticipate future growth. Most of the funds for the improvements have come in but we are about $15,000 short of the goal. At the same time our savings are being reduced and could leave us with only $30,000 in cash flow resources by this coming January. This cash flow level is necessary as we pay the missionaries, staff and regular bills at certain times of the month, before all the offerings are received by the end of the month. I would like to ask you to pray in the following ways. Commit to a personal fast to dedicate the time you normally spend in preparation and eating to prayer for God s provision. We should not only ask for God s provision but also for His direction for the leadership to know if we should cut something from our budget. Plan to join us August 28 th when we fast through lunch after church and dedicate a prayer tour through our facilities, praying corporately for each of the different ministries of the church. Vision + Faith + Sacrifice = Miracle Funding is a faith issue which requires the kind of trust that leads to the sacrifice of obedience to see God at work. The great test of faith for Abraham was the provision of a ram to sacrifice in place of his son, Isaac (Genesis 22). Abraham had been told to sacrifice his only son, but as he was in the act of making the offering, God stopped him and revealed a ram caught in a thicket for the sacrifice. Abraham called the place Jehovah Jireh or the Lord Will Provide. This prefigures the sacrifice of Christ, God s only Son, as the substitute for our sin. Just as we must trust Christ for our eternal salvation, so must we trust God for the provision of our finances. Abraham had already learned to trust God s plan for his people and was counted righteous in Genesis 15, but later in Genesis 22 he learned to trust God for the supply of his greatest need. Jesus said to seek first His kingdom and financial needs would be supplied (Matt. 6). Other passages talk about the importance of planning and administering money wisely. Though Christ didn t speak against responsibly planning our finances for tomorrow, our planning is relatively insignificant in comparison to trusting God for our finances. Often our plans fail so that we can learn that God doesn t depend on our ability to plan. In Exodus 16:4, God promised to rain down bread from heaven for you. We should think of funding as fund lowering from God and not fund raising from people. God wants us to give out of conviction for His work and not out of obligation. We give for the joy of sharing in God s purposes and not a need to rescue God s work (2Cor. 9:7) as if He wasn t able to supply immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine... (Eph. 3:20). God loves a cheerful giver. Verses like Proverbs 21:20 make it clear that wise people save and plan, but a far more important issue is trusting God. In the church we need those who are gifted in administering funds, but that should never override the concern for faith and integrity. If we must sacrifice integrity to receive or save money, then faith says, It isn t worth it! Better a little with righteousness, than much gain with injustice. (Proverbs 16:8) Small Group Discussion Guide - 1 Thessalonians 5:8-28 Ice Breaker: What causes you to get really upset and what do you do to keep from exploding? 1. What do we need according to verse 8 to put on faith, love and hope? 2. What do you think it means to be appointed to suffer wrath? What has the believer been appointed to? 3. What do you think awake or asleep means? (Compare 4:13-15) 4. Who are the believers that are over us and admonish us in the Lord? How should we treat them? 5. What is the difference between disrespect and disagree? How could we disagree and yet show respect and hold them in the highest regard? 6. Who are the different kind of believers mention in verse 14 and how should we treat each one? 7. Why is it so important that we not pay back wrong for wrong? 8. Which of the commands in verses are the most challenging to you? 9. What is the most encouraging part of the benediction in for you? 6 NEW ADULT BIBLE STUDY BEGINS SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 11 TH AT 9:00 AM. ROMANS TAUGHT BY BOB CROTTS This class will be presented in a verse-by-verse way that everyone can understand and have input where needed. We will begin by studying how God used a sinful man like Paul as His chosen instrument to spread the Gospel of Jesus Christ. We will discuss the following specific topics plus answer any other questions that may arise: What does the Gospel include? How to come to terms with our sinful nature! What is God's provision for our salvation? Our pursuit of sanctification and a holy life. The Sovereignty of God and the responsibility of man to God. What our natural response to God should be. How should we handle those who do not pursue a holy life? Other topics as they arise...once we have understood God's great mercy, we will discuss what the Christian life should look like. Psalm 119:105 says that God's Word is a lamp to my feet and a light for my path The book of Romans is a great blueprint that describes God's plan for each of us. He desires relationship with each of his creation but sin has broken that relationship. We are all sinners by Adam's curse. Romans says there is a consequence for sin. We will be alienated from God's presence. Not that God does not love the sinner, but His holiness requires sin to be judged. The wrath of God is revealed. Romans tells us of God's love and faithfulness. In Christ Jesus, he has provided a way for our curse to be broken. We will discuss how one can be saved and God's faithfulness in holding us until eternity for his Name's sake. We will talk about sanctification and what it means to live a Godly life. How is one set apart to "die to self." We are to become like Christ...that is God s plan for us. We will look briefly at our Statement of Faith for those who are interested and comment on any issues that are brought up. COOK, TIM AND BONNIE MISSIONARY PRAYER REQUESTS FOR AUGUST, Pray that God will change a couple they know and use them for His glory and His purposes in Spain. 2.Pray for wisdom for Tim and his team as they seek to help missionary parents who are struggling to educate their children in difficult environments. 3.Pray for salvation for V and others who have heard the gospel through our local Spanish church. 4.Pray for Tim s dad, Hall, as he adjusts to life without his partner of almost 67 years. 5.Pray for traveling mercies as we plan to return to Spain on August 17 th. 6.Pray for the new group of volunteers that begin arriving in August and September. 7.Pray for moldable spirits that allow God to use us for His glory however He desires in Spain. ENTSMINGER, DEBBIE 1.Pray for Whitney that she truly will be like a tree planted by streams of water that yields its fruit in its season and its leaf does not wither. Ask the Lord to work out the details if he wants Deb to keep meeting with her. 2.Pray God will open the door for Jim and Deb if He wants them to start leading a Bible study for college students in Bradenton. 3.Pray that the Lord will make His grace abound to both the staff and students who will be reaching out to new students, for energy, wisdom in pacing and that we will follow Him well to every student He wants us meeting. 4.Pray the Lord will give them wisdom so our staff teams can minister the way the Lord s created them to, being more energized and experiencing more joy as they do so, and partner well in doing this for His glory. MANDA, STEVE AND LOIS 1.Pray that the believers will rededicate their lives to the Lord, since many have not been to church for a long time. 2.Pray for the people in the village who have suffered much from the flash flooding. 3.Pray for Steve and Lois as they will be leaving Indonesia on December 12 th. POWLEY, JANE 1.Pray that the rains will now continue and that the people of Senegal will have an adequate food supply. 2.Pray for the staff and students at ITES. Pray that everyone who wants to attend will have the funds to do so. 3.Pray for the individuals who have taken on the challenge of doing the Emmaus Bible Courses. Pray that some will realize their need for a Savior and others that they will grow in their Christian walk. 4.Pray for the individuals who come to visit the library that they will find resources that will help them with their studies and see the love of Christ in us the library team. PREGNANCY SOLUTIONS 1. Pray for the Pregnancy and Infant Loss Awareness event on October 15th. This event will be a powerful reminder of the value of each life, and that it will provide needed awareness and support about the impact of pregnancy loss for those in our community.
