1 OUR MISSION STATEMENT TO SPREAD THE GOOD NEWS OF JESUS CHRIST TO ALL GOD S PEOPLE BY WORD AND ACTION. THE KUDOS TO KATHLEEN BEDING- FIELD FOR 15 YEARS FAITH IS KNOWING BY CINDY HAMILTON BAPTISM OF THE LORD THANK YOU LETTER FROM THE FRAIL FAMILY Winged Lion JANUARY 2013 Everyone is invited to join together on March 5th-7th at 7pm each evening. Our Parish Mission February 23-27, 27, 2013 With Special Guest Fr. Philip Fr. Philip is a Jesuit priest born on the Mediterranean Island of Malta. He has advanced degrees in Pastoral Theology, Communications and Spirituality. He has worked in high school, university and parish settings in various capacities. More recently he has been mainly involved in retreat work and spiritual direction. He is an artist at heart and madly in love with all things beautiful and soulful: music, painting, sculpture, photography, film, theatre, poetry, good company, good food, good wine and more. He strongly believes that beauty is a uniquely wonderful entry into the mystery of the God whose centre is everywhere and whose circumference is nowhere. God can indeed be sensed and experienced in all things if we have ears to hear and eyes to see, if we have the patience to have a long, loving look at the real that surrounds us. Fr. Philip considers himself a seeker, exploring and employing new, fresh and creative ways to proclaim the Good News in the hope of helping fellow pilgrims and seekers to embrace real and radical changes that will lead to conversion and transformation. Novena of Reparation for Roe vs. Wade : January The Catholic bishops of the United States have designated January 22 as a special day of prayer and penance in reparations for the massive killing that has resulted from the Roe vs. Wade Supreme Court decision (handed down January 22, 1973) which permitted abortion throughout pregnancy. We invite you to prepare spiritually for that day by joining a Novena that starts on January 14 and concludes on the 22nd. We invite you to say the prayer below each of those days. God and Father of Life, You have created every human person, and have opened the way for each to have eternal life. We live in the shadow of death. Tens of millions of your children have been killed because of the Roe vs. Wade decision legalizing abortion. Father, have mercy on us. Heal our land and accept our offering of prayer and penance. In your love for us, turn back the scourge of abortion. May each of us exult in hearts full of hope and hands full of mercy and work together to build a culture of life. We pray through Christ our Lord. Amen.

This year we expect the number to near the century mark as our LifeTeen formation program continues to attract new youth and their friends. The first step in this process is our Confirmation Mini-Retreat which offers youth, parents and sponsors the opportunity...to help the candidates appreciate personal prayer and scripture, and to guide the candidates, parents and sponsors to journey with them in the celebration of Confirmation....to encourage the candidates to embrace prayer with an open and teachable heart, with the help of the Holy Spirit, that they might use in their daily life. The retreat will be held in New Legacy on January 6, 2013 and begins at 1:30pm. It concludes as we join to celebrate the Eucharist at the 5pm Mass. It is a fun filled day of faith that you are sure to enjoy. If you have any questions contact Cindy Hamilton in the Youth Office at Some Christians bless their homes on Epiphany each year. With chalk, they write an inscription on the inside lintel above the front door. The series of numbers, letters, and crosses changes only slightly from year to year. For example, at the start of the year 2002, the line read as follows: 20+CO+M+B+02. The four digits designating the new year appear at the beginning and end of the line. In 2003, for example, the last number changed to a 3. Because Epiphany comes so near the beginning of the new year, the numbers represent an annual renewal of God's blessing. The letters have two meanings. They are the initials of the traditional names of the magi: Caspar, Melchior and Balthazar. They also abbreviate the Latin words "Christus mansionem benedicat." "May Christ bless the house." The letters recall the day on which the inscription is made, as well as the purpose of blessing. The crosses represent Christ, whom we invoke, and the saintliness of the magi. The inscription is made above the front door, so that all who enter and depart this year may enjoy God's blessing. The month of January still bears the name of the roman god Janus, the doorkeeper of heaven and patron of the beginning and end of things. This blessing adds a Christian dimension to the traditional observance of the first month. The inscription is made of chalk, a product of clay, which recalls the human nature taken by God's eternal Word in this holy season. If you want to bless your home this Epiphany, read the opening verses of John's Gospel, pray the Lord's prayer, then write the inscription for this year above your front door with chalk. 4 Faith is Knowing by Cindy Hamilton It is one thing to know scripture and another to know the God of the Bible. Charles Spurgeon once said The scripture is our inexhaustible textbook, the Lord Jesus, our boundless subject, and the Holy Spirit our divine infinite helper. Our Catholic Church teaches us, "Sacred tradition and sacred scripture make up a single sacred deposit of the Word of God. CCC (Par. 97) When I hear the word tradition, I think of one of my favorite movies, Fiddler on the Roof. Tevye, who sings his heart out, and stomps his feet singing over and over again, TRADITION. The Catholic meaning of the word tradition is to hand over to another person. Jesus is the one who handed over our traditions to us, and every generation continues to hand over those God given traditions to the next generation. For example, "The apostles left bishops as their successors. They gave them their own position of teaching authority." CCC (par. 77). "This living transmission, accomplished through the Holy Spirit, is called tradition..." CCC (par.78). "Both scripture and tradition must be accepted and honored with equal sentiments of devotion and reverence." CCC (par. 82). Did you know the Bible is the number one bestselling book in history? Great men and women have been changed and humbled by it. Napoleon Bonaparte once said, The Bible is no mere book, but a living Creature, with a power that conquers all that oppose it. It is said that your spiritual life will grow when you read the scriptures, and nothing else you can ever study comes close to the power of reading and studying the Bible. As a young child, my first memories were of a God who was an unseen part of my family. Everyone talked about Him. We had the big Bible on our table with lots of pictures. I would flip through them, and my grandparents would sit with me and explain the pictures and stories. As I got older, I loved to read about Paul and his travels. I had a small knowledge of the scriptures. I lived out the Catholic tradition just like all my family and neighbors did, until a crisis came about; my grandpa passed away. All I had been taught and believed felt unreal. God didn t save the day. I felt like no one really heard me when I prayed. I had real doubt, and had never been so unhappy in my life. My grandpa was gone, and I didn t feel something I had always had, belief. I looked for answers and no one could help me. My people perish from a lack of knowledge. Hosea 4:6 That is when I was led to pick up the Bible and read it from the beginning like a novel. I was so amazed at how interesting it was. The stories were not about a perfect people who did everything right; in fact they were a mess, just like us. They It is not we who possess the Truth after having sought it, but the Truth that seeks us out and possesses us. suffered and lost loved ones, and struggled with their relationship with God. In the Old Testament, they had hope in a sovereign God who loved them and would send a Messiah to save them. In the New Testament, Jesus was the answer to so many hopes and dreams; He is our Savior and Messiah. I began to see connections to the Catholic Church. Our Mass, traditions and prayers were rooted in the Bible. I had knowledge and a way to connect back with the living God of the Bible. It was the beginning of a great adventure that led me to work in the Catholic Church and continue to receive knowledge of the God of the Bible and His people. St. Augustine once said, It is not we who possess the Truth after having sought it, but the Truth that seeks us out and possesses us. MEN S A.C.T.S. 5 Beyond Cana Marriage Enrichment Retreat February 8-10, 2013 The Beyond Cana Marriage Enrichment Retreat is for couples in strong, Christ-centered marriages. It focuses on couple communication, love and intimacy, all vital components of stable and secure marriage relationships. It is composed of a blend of spiritual and practical talks, periods for couple reflection, prayer, and the introduction of useful tools designed to renew and invigorate your marriage through improved communication. This is all done from a Catholic perspective, with an understanding of marriage as a sacrament. Please contact: Dave & Jo Anne Dimitriou for details at BAPTISM OF THE LORD : January 13, 2013 By PAUL TURNER Christmas Time comes to its close when we celebrate the Baptism of the Lord, an event recorded in all four Gospels. To begin his public ministry, Jesus presented himself to be baptized by John the Baptist, and God manifested Jesus as the divine Son. Because we associate baptism with the forgiveness of sins, the idea that the sinless Jesus would undergo baptism seems out of place. The evangelists must have thought the same; as a whole, they downplay the incident. But the baptism of Jesus had nothing to do with forgiveness; it had everything to do with manifestation. It was a new beginning because it publicly revealed Jesus' identity, and that testimony came not from just any witness but from God. Three incidents in the Bible are traditionally called the "epiphany" events or the "manifestations" of Jesus, newly arrived on the biblical scene: the visit of the magi, the baptism, and the miracle at the wedding in Cana. Prior to 1969 we heard all three of these Scriptures in successive weeks: Jan, 6, Jan. 13, and on the following Sunday. All three stories form a unit because they progressively reveal the identity, the authority, and the power of Jesus. In today's calendar the Sunday readings spread over a three-year cycle. On the Baptism of the Lord we hear a different evangelist's account each year. Only in year C does the following Sunday feature the Gospel of the wedding at Cana to unify the three celebrations. In the United States we celebrate Epiphany on a Sunday. But in countries where the Epiphany is a holy day of obligation, it is celebrated on Jan. 6. In the United States, the Baptism of the Lord is usually the Sunday after the Epiphany; but if Epiphany comes late, falling on Jan. 6 or 7, the Baptism of the Lord goes to the next day, Jan. 7 or 8, a Monday, in order to make room for the weeks of Ordinary Time. 7 Distinguished Knights of Columbus, When I arrived at Christopher Hall a week ago Sunday, I was deeply in need of rejuvenation. I was met by lines of donors giving the gift of life, Jesus' Eternal Gift. I was warmed by the coordination and attention given to this Blood Drive. I met Gary Richmond and Al Gill, who immediately knew I was the father of Ayden Atticus Frail. My son, although he s been given a bleak diagnosis, is a small bundle of opportunity. Stage 4 Neuroblastoma is a rare and stunningly under funded cancer that is aggressive and stubborn. My son has already taught me, since his birth, to stop sweating the small stuff; all I have to do is look him in the eye. I m sure many of you are fathers. Unfortunately, I m sure because of this, you ve also experienced despair. I believe that if something good can come from Ayden s cancer, it s that if my son can gather soldiers of God to offer the gift of life to so many in need then he has become OUR disciple. Don t forget the reasons you were at St. Christopher s hall on Sunday, and spread this message to everyone you know. Children offer love freely. I don t have the words to thank you all, other than to assure you that when Ayden is old enough, I hope that one day Ayden Atticus will wield the saber of The Knights of Columbus. I love you gentle warriors and I thank you. Let the whole face wear an air of cheerfulness rather than that of sorrow, or any other disorderly affection; and if anyone be disposed to gloominess and melancholy, he must strive by much virtue and docility to suppress and banish it, and study so much the more to show a pious cheerfulness. -Saint Ignatius, Father of the Church Some quotes from Ayden Atticus, the wunderkind: "Mommy, he (Santa) can't leave too many because then there won t be enough for the rest of the children in our world. Besides Mommy, Christmas isn't only about presents, it's about love and family." I (his Mom, Jenny) just kissed Ayden and said "I'm glad I got to spend today with you." He replied" me too, and you will be spending today with me lots of times" Ayden has a perfect view of the hospital s helipad (from his hospital bed). He just saw a helicopter land and said "so, do you think they went on a rescue or just to pick up some lunch?" "I can't wait to see sister tonight, she is as pretty as a princess...she has crowns and everything" "Mommy, can you please buy me a pet spider so it can bite me just like a spider bit Peter Parker? See Mommy, that's the only way I can be the real Spiderman. I promise to keep it in a cage so it won t bite anyone else, and I won t cry even though it will hurt a little because I'm used to shots now." (Branndon wrote the Sunday after Thanksgiving) Surgery tomorrow. He is a peaceful giant of a boy. He looked at me and said," I'm too tired for cancer today. Can I have it next Friday?" YBIC, Branndon James Frail

Thabet at Accent Travel, Because of you, more than 779 families in San Antonio will get to spend their holidays at home. We just want to say THANK YOU! At this time of year, we are reminded that we have so much to be thankful for. I want you to know how grateful we are for you, a loyal supporter and partner of Habitat for Humanity of San Antonio. Because of you, more than 779 hardworking, lowincome families in San Antonio will get to spend their holidays this year in the comfort and safety of their own decent and affordable homes. There are 16 more families getting ready to celebrate the completion of their new homes just this coming weekend -- we hope you will join us! With Sincerest Thanks, Natalie Griffith NUMBER 18 by Sam Szalwinski We are soon approaching the time when we will start building our next Habitat for Humanity house. We need to raise $52,000 to build this house. This is a considerable amount of money; however, we also have a very large parish. Commitment weekend is the weekend of January 5-6 with construction to begin on February 1. That gives us a very short time to raise the necessary funds. However, the Habitat for Humanity organization knows that our parish will definitely meet the funding requirements, and allows us extra time. I am appealing to more of our families to commit to this very worthwhile ministry, especially in the area of financial contributions. You do not have to contribute large amounts. Any amount will be appreciated. We build houses for families who cannot otherwise afford to buy a new, decent, and affordable well built house. This is not a give away program. Homeowners must be employed and earn enough to pay a mortgage of about $450 per month and also meet all other family expenses. Prospective homeowners are carefully screened by the Habitat for Humanity organization with numerous other criteria that they must meet. On January 5-6, parishioners will have the opportunity to sign up in two places. First, there will be a half-sheet on which you can indicate to which of four areas you would like to help. After Mass, there will be tables in the Narthex where you may choose the day(s) that you would like to work.
9 Notes for JS Paluch: Please run 3750 copies. 8 pages in color, folded top to bottom, so the front page is facing outward. Any expedited efforts would be greatly appreciated. Sincerely, Shane Hamilton Development Director
