1 The First Congregational Church of Old Lyme MAY 2018 Living in Sanctuary As I sit down to write this month, I m aware that it has now been 37 days since Malik and Zahida entered sanctuary at FCCOL. The background of that story is familiar to all of you by now, and so I don t need to rehearse it here. Their reality now is one of ceaseless waiting, punctuated by visits and activities that can help serve as a distraction. Their legal team is working diligently on their appeals process, and we trust that ultimately, it will succeed. Meanwhile, they adjust to an existence lived entirely indoors, confined to a lovely building and yet confined all the same. On the wall of Malik and Zahida s living space, they ve hung a collage of notes and cards sent by well wishers from our community, and from around the state. Many are addressed to their daughter Roniya, sharing love or support or words of encouragement with her. During a recent visit, some of us lingered over those cards, wondering what it must be to reside in sanctuary day after day. In particular, we wondered what it must be to raise a five year old from the confines of that space. And we wondered what it must be like to actually be five years old, facing realities that most adults cannot comprehend, let alone a child. Can you imagine what it would be like to try and raise your five-year-old child - while trapped within the walls of a building you cannot physically leave for fear of being taken away from that child? It s an invisible kind of horror that this family lives with everyday. Throughout the Gospels, some of the most powerful utterances that Jesus speaks have to do with children. When the disciples try to shoo them away from Jesus, he urges them draw near. When a child lies in repose, sick from a terrible illness, Jesus takes her hand and makes her well. In a discussion with religious and political leaders of his day, Jesus says that it would be better to have a millstone cast around one s neck and thrown into the sea than to cause a child harm. I think about the way Jesus seemed to delight in children, and to identify with them, whenever I m with Roniya. And I confess I think about his words when I consider the profound harm our policies do to families, and especially to children. I worry about the burdens the trauma of forced or potential deportations are creating and I wonder about the metaphorical millstones that Jesus speaks about, the unbearable burdens that each of us is forced to carry when harm befalls a child. But I also believe other ways are possible, and available. That s why we ve entered the new sanctuary movement. It s why we ve chosen to extend hospitality to Malik and Zahida and Roniya. And it s why we ll continue in this work for as long as it s necessary to do so, trusting that our witness can help to create an alternative to the trauma of separated families and forced exiles. But it s also an invitation to learn more about our country s broken immigration system, including why and how families like Malik and Zahida and Roniya have suddenly been thrust into this situation. To that end, I m recommending two books that may prove helpful to those willing to spend more time thinking about these issues. One is entitled Undocumented: How Immigration Became Illegal, by Aviva Chomsky. The other is entitled The Line Becomes a River: Dispatches from the Border, by Francisco Cantu. I m working my way through both at the moment. I d like to invite you to join me. But I also wonder if some of you might consider joining a journey to the Mexican countryside outside of Mexico City this coming September. Since embarking on our sanctuary efforts, I ve been made aware of a program there that educates those of us from North America on the realities that might lead a person to risk everything to cross the border into the United States. It s a program that promises to help us think not only from a national perspective, but from an international perspective. It s a program that promises to help us understand our commonality with those on the other side of a rather arbitrary barrier. It s a program that promises to help us consider these issues theologically, as we learn to embrace all of God s children - not simply those with the right documents. We still have a few places available, and so if you d like to be a part of such an experience, let me know. In the meantime, we ll do our part here at home too. If you haven t met Malik and Zahida and Roniya yet, introduce yourselves on a Sunday, or find a time to stop in and say hello. They d love it, and I can guarantee you ll be moved as well. And if you d like to be involved at a deeper level, let me or Lina Tuck know, and we ll figure out how you can contribute. But as much as anything, I would simply ask that you keep this family in your prayers, as we all do our best to lighten the heavy burden they re carrying. In faith, hope, but most especially, in love.

2 LBS LUNCHEON ON MAY 8 th at NOON You hear her angelic voice from the choir loft on Sunday mornings. Now you can hear Marcy Conway doing an extended solo performance just for those attending the LBS Luncheon on Tuesday, May 8 th. She will accompany herself on guitar and banjo. Marcy has a broad repertoire and will sing folk, inspirational, and patriotic songs in commemoration of Memorial Day at the end of the month. Marcy began her singing career imitating Julie Andrews when she was 11. She was next inspired by the folk music of Joan Baez and she immersed herself in the era s musical world, attending the celebrated 1969 Woodstock concert in a VW van with 15 other people. After formal musical training, she went on to sing with the Yale Camerata and the Yale Bach Society. For five years she was the full-time staff Musician at CT Hospice in Branford but that is a whole different tale! There she discovered a broad musical repertoire and an emerging sense of ministry. Marcy is now selfemployed as a musical therapist performing at senior centers, nursing homes, and other community venues. All her life, Marcy has simultaneously been on a pilgrimage of faith propelled by her musical passion. Early on, she became an Episcopalian where her friends were also singing. In the early 1980s, her broadening curiosity moved her to the Baha i faith. Then she began Buddhist meditation and later began dancing with the Sufis at the Dances of Universal Peace. She arrived at FCCOL, eager to sing with the Christians, because she was so amazed at our choir and the minister s warm welcome when she showed up for Easter two years ago not to mention the fantastic director, Simon Holt! The rest is history, and our collective joy. The Luncheon begins at noon in the Fellowship Hall of the First Congregational Church of Old Lyme; the program will start around 1 pm after dessert. Programs last about 45 min., including a closing Q&A. The Ladies Who Stitch sewing group will also have recent work on display and for sale. The cost of the Luncheon is $5 plus canned goods for the Shoreline Food Pantry, or a package of disposable diapers for the Diaper Bank. Please call the Church Office at by Friday, May 4, to reserve a place at the Luncheon. This will be the final LBS Luncheon for the Spring. But join us for the annual Haitian Dinner on Sunday, May 20, at 5 pm. Luncheons will resume in September. Multifaith Prayer Service and Potluck Dinner, May 9th, 6:00 8:00 pm Please join us for a Multifaith Prayer Service for Malik, Zahida and Roniya starting at 6:00 pm in the Meetinghouse. All are welcome as we gather in loving community to pray and share in a feast with our friends living in sanctuary at FCCOL. A potluck dinner in Fellowship Hall will follow the service. 3 Church News Annual Haitian Dinner on Sunday, May 20th at 5:00 pm: The Ladies Benevolent Society will once again sponsor a Haitian dinner to benefit the work of The Crosby Fund for Haitian Education. Becky Crosby, our former Associate Minister and co-founder of The Crosby Fund, will offer a 'PowerPoint' presentation of their on-going work in Haiti with a special focus on the work of the Education Center. Vaudy Jean Baptiste, our Program Director in Haiti, and Fednor Sidort, our Program Administrator, will join us on this festive occasion. The presentation will offer several short videos to give you a glimpse of the activities at the Center. Sandra's Next Generation, a fabulous Creole restaurant from New Haven, CT will provide the delicious Haitian meal. Suggested cost per person is $10.00 (donations are gratefully received!). Doors will open at 5 pm for Haitian art shopping. Dinner will be served at 5:30 pm, followed by the presentation. Call the church office ( ) for reservations. Puerto Rican Community Meal The Refugee Committee of Christ the King Church, St. Ann s Church and the First Congregational Church of Old Lyme invite you to our 2 nd annual community meal, this year hosted by our Puerto Rican family: Adrian, Lis Marie, Adrian Jr. and Gustavo. Saturday, June 9, 6:00 pm at Christ the King Church. All Donations Welcome. The Ladies Who Stitch, a group of 15 women from both inside and outside FCCOL, meet most Mondays from 10:00-2:00 in the Sheffield Auditorium. We knit and sew many things to sell and donate. We will not meet on Monday, April 30th, or Monday, May 28th (Memorial Day), and our final session will be June 4th when we ll take a much-deserved break for the summer. Our inventory is available during our Monday working hours and well as at the May 8th LBS luncheon. All proceeds from our sales go to LBS to support the church s many outreach programs. Our creations will be on sale during the Crosby Foundation s Haitian dinner on May 20th - and all income from that evening will be donated to the Crosby Scholarship Fund. In support of the Crosby Foundation s mission in Haiti, LWS also made 80 teeshirt dresses and collected 67 tee-shirts and more than 200 pairs of girls and boys underpants - all of which were taken to Deschapelles by the students participating in the April trip. We continue to make large tote bags (90+ now) for the NLHHC, and we are making book bag/backpacks that will be sent to Haiti for the beginning of the school year. Currently we are also working on quilts, aprons, baby items, Sunday school teacher gifts, and more. We are sometime able to fulfill special requests. Questions? 4 More Church News On the roof of the First Congregational Church of Old Lyme are 136 solar panels which reduce the cost of electricity, as well as reduce the environmental footprint of the church. Congregational Church a Leader in Old Lyme Solar Efforts By Maureen Plumleigh, Member, First Congregational Church of Old Lyme and Old Lyme Conservation Commission The Old Lyme Conservation Commission encourages the Town of Old Lyme to become cleaner through supporting pollinators, eliminating lawn pesticides, and utilizing renewable energy. The First Congregational Church of Old Lyme takes a leadership role in Going Solar. An iconic center of Old Lyme, the church began efforts in 2014, urged by the church s Committee for the Environment. The church s efforts included input from solar-based non-profit organizations, financial and engineering experts, and installer Waldo Renewable of Old Lyme. Waldo Solar installed 136 panels on the roof of the church parish house. At peak, they can generate 44 KW of electricity. Even through this winter s heavy winds, they continued to function, providing a flow of renewable energy and financial savings. Since start of generation in 2015, the church derived 37% of its energy from the panels. We also sell the unused energy generated by the panels back to the utility at retail price. Thus the panels provide a 60% financial saving. States Senior Minister of FCCOL, Reverend Steven Jungkeit: Our effort is to demonstrate how any institution, family, or business can step up and take action. We are proud to be a part of a faith institution that cares about the world, our environment, and puts our faith into practice ecologically. The benefits of clean energy reduce the church s electricity expenses as well as its carbon footprint. 5 Church Business News Uses of Life Insurance for Planned Giving Planned Giving is about giving the Church assets that it can use at some later point. Many of the articles I have written previously have described how you can make a gift to the Church and yet receive an income for your lifetime first before the Church receives the donation. Life Insurance could work similarly, but the most common use is to give the Church the gift of the premium for a policy on your life. Note the table below for a gift of a $100,000 policy to the Church: Age Annual Premium 40 $ $ $ $ $5607 You get to deduct 100% of the gift of premium to the Church and the Church will receive the $100,000. What a meaningful gift for a small amount of money! Of course, various methods of paying the policy over shorter time frames and your health affect the actual premium that is charged, but in most circumstances this is a great way to give to the Church in a meaningful way. Perhaps you have a policy that already exists. That policy could be gifted to the Church and you can receive an income for life based upon the cash value of the policy. If the policy is a term insurance policy, it might be able to be sold. The sale price could be given to the Church and you could receive a deduction for a percentage of the gift. So there are many ways to make a Planned Gift with life insurance. Please feel free to contact Tom Grant at or tcgrant9215@gmail.com should you have questions about this topic. WHEN MAKING A GIFT OF STOCK Please notify the Church of your gift, including the designated use, at the time you request your broker to make the transfer. You may also use the Church s broker, Morgan Stanley, to make the transfer if you wish. We occasionally receive gifts from a broker without knowing the donor, or whether the gift is intended for a 2017 or 2018 giving, or for another purpose. If you have any questions, or need further instruction, please feel free to call me or Teri Gedrys at Your help is greatly appreciated. Bob McCracken, Treasurer WHEN SENDING A CHECK Please be sure to note on the check where the offering is to be credited (e.g. pledge, food pantry, donation, Habitat, etc.). It is also important to note whether your contribution is for 2017 or 2018, especially vital this time of year. Thank you for your help.

7 Christian Education News GOD'S NEIGHBORHOOD SUNDAY SCHOOL Welcome to God s Neighborhood All Are Welcome! Please Join US! May 6 - Review our Favorite Parables! May 13 - Parenting Appreciation Recognition Day May 20 - Children s Day May 27 - Special Memorial Day program Senior Pilgrim Fellowship at First Congregational Church of Old Lyme has a long tradition of participating in the Midnight Run every year. This year is no different on May 27, 2018 a group of high school students and a few supportive adults who will lead and drive them will journey to New York City to deliver food, blankets, clothing and toiletries to homeless residents. We will think about veterans on this trip thanking them for their service. Although all of this is important, also important are the conversations we have and stories we listen to while we share a cup of drink and a bowl of chili. There are many ways to support this important night: Provide clean clothing, bags, toiletries, and blankets to hand out Clothing sorting and toiletries packing is needed from 4-6 (with Pizza!) on Saturday, May 19 and Saturday, May 26. Sandwich ingredients (meat and meatless options). Donations of fruit. Donations of bottled water. We need youth to make sandwiches and pack lunch bags on the afternoon of May 27 starting at 3:30. Chili made and delivered on May 27. Two adults are needed per vehicle to drive safely down and back. High School Students to hand out food, drink and clothes! We NEED lots of ENERGY! Please LisaDoggart@gmail.com to help with any of this or to add your ideas, and to participate! This night is a fun and meaningful night that is an incredible evening! We leave Old Lyme at 5:30, our first stop in NYC at 8 and plan to arrive in OL sometime around 12. Your teen will text en route. Here is the overview of the program from Midnight Run: In over 1,000 relief missions per year, Midnight Run volunteers from churches, synagogues, schools and other civic groups distribute food, clothing, blankets and personal care items to the homeless poor on the streets of New York City. The late-night relief efforts create a forum for trust, sharing, understanding and affection. That human exchange, rather than the exchange of goods, is the essence of the Midnight Run mission. Midnight Run is not a solution to homelessness. Our goal is to forge a bond between housed and homeless people by establishing a foundation of sharing and caring from which solutions may evolve. Through Midnight Run, volunteers come to see the homeless as real people, not a commodity. And homeless men and women learn that many mainstream adults and teenagers have commitments and concerns that go beyond their own lives and families.
