This will also be the day of our all-church picnic.

5 This morning we welcome and thank The Rev. Scott Harris to our pulpit. Scott is a retired Lutheran pastor and last served as Senior Pastor at St. John s Lutheran, Stamford. Besides serving in parishes in Wisconsin and Long Island, Scott and his wife, Karen, lived in India for five years, where Pastor Harris was an instructor in Hebrew and Old Testament at an interdenominational seminary in Hyderabad, India. He is a graduate of Yale Divinity School and has a Ph.D. in Hebrew and Old Testament from Union Theological Seminary, NYC. Scott is Co-Chair of the Refugee Resettlement Committee and Karen is a member of the Board of Deacons. The Line Becomes a River by Francisco Cantu will be our next book group selection. We'll meet TODAY, following our 10:00 am worship service. This book is being read by those participating in our mission trip to Mexico in September and others. Come join us for the discussion if you can. All are welcome! News from the Immigrant Assistance Committee Today is day 140 in Sanctuary for Malik and Zahida. We continue to find new ways to help our beloved family persevere during their confinement. We are always looking for volunteers to make a visit or share in a potluck dinner. Please contact Lina Tuck (lina.tuck@gmail.com) or , to get involved. Please continue to support Malik and Zahida by having a meal at Pizza Corner, 36 Broad Street, New Britain. The FCCOL Immigration Committee supports the humane and dignified treatment of Immigrants by providing education on immigration rights, sanctuary for families in threat of deportation, and assistance to secure legal counsel. Donations to the Immigrant Assistance Fund may be sent to FCCOL. Please note this fund in the comment line. South African Choir Coming! We have now confirmed that Ovuwa, the indigenous performance choir of the University of Pretoria, South Africa, under the direction of our own Mxolisi Duda, will be visiting with us from September 26 through October 7 th. There will concerts and school visits and opportunities for fellowship. We re hoping to find some volunteers to help with the planningfinding host families, contacting schools to arrange performances and transporting our guests. 6 Summer Sings The Senior Choir is officially on break for the summer months. Simon traditionally created a new group known as the "Thrown-together-that-day-by-theskin-of-our-teeth-but-oh-isn't-this-so-much-fun Choir" that is open to anyone at FCCOL who would like to sing the first Sunday of every month. We rehearse at 9:15 am in the Meeting House for our 10:00 am service, and you are all welcome to join! Today we are blessed with one of the summer choir sings. The next date this summer is September 2. The Lyme/Old Lyme Refugee Resettlement Committee, our 3-church initiative, provides shelter and sustenance to families who need support due to traumatic/catastrophic events that have forced them from their homes. Information and volunteer sign-up sheets are available in the vestibule. FINAL CALL: WINGS OF JUSTICE: IMMIGRATION, SANCTUARY AND THE PATHWAYS OF FAITH On September 18-27, we re setting out on a 10-day immersion journey to Mexico. The cost is $1,100 per person, which includes all ground transportation, accommodations, meals and activities in Mexico. Flights are around $400 and are to be booked separately by each traveler. Channeling our concerns into public consciousness and action Together We Rise CT is a group of people from the Lower Connecticut River Valley who use open communication, art, personal testimony, political advocacy, and education to address issues of economic, racial, and environmental justice. The group holds a vigil every Saturday from 10 to 11 am on the property of Two Wrasslin Cats Coffee Shop in East Haddam. Through these ongoing vigils, participants strive to keep social justice issues in the forefront of our consciousness and to stand in solidarity with marginalized groups. Two Wrasslin Cats is at 374 Town Street, East Haddam, at the intersection of Routes 82 and 151. (Parking is at nearby Miller s Pond.) 7 God s Neighborhood Psalm 148:10 Every wild and tame animal, all reptiles and birds, come praise the Lord! During the month of August we will celebrate the Wild animals that inhabit the lands of the earth! Holy Creature Crafts meets during our 10 am service - everyone welcome! We also have a nursery nearby for play for our youngest friends. Tuesday, August 7: Family Summer Arts Camp - between 5:00 and 8:00 p.m. we will share pot luck food and fun art experiences and visit with our friends Malik, Zahida and Roniya. We will participate in Wild Animal Yoga Dance this week! August 26th at the 10AM Service: Blessing of the Backpacks All are invited to bring their back to school backpacks for a special blessing during our service. Let us enter the fall with open minds and full backpacks and thanksgiving for our teachers and new opportunities this year! August 26th: Schemitzun, the Feast of Green Corn and Dance; giving honor to Mantoo (Creator) provider of all things and celebrating our harvest, ancestors, elders, veterans, family, friends, and Native American heritage. September 9 at 9:00 AM is the beginning day of Sunday School for the fall! Our Sunday School program, God s Neighborhood, will be learning about cultures and traditions around the world as we think about how Jesus befriended others and fostered community throughout his ministry. 8 March 12 23, 2019 Extension to Jordan through March 26 Tree of Life Educational Fund will offer its next journey in March of This journey will have a special focus on the role of women, past and present, in their struggle to give birth to a New Creation. The Land of Canaan, sometimes called the Holy Land or the Land of Promise, is a place replete with the sacred stories of women who by their love, courage, resilience and determination endeavor to make their communities a place where all God s children could learn to live together in peace. The voice of Rachel weeping for her children can be heard in the lamentations of Palestinian and Israeli mothers who have lost their children in the violence. In organizations such as Women in Black, in those Israeli women who, despite being ostracized by members of their own families, courageously keep vigil at checkpoints in solidarity with Palestinians and their quest for human rights, we will be reminded of how Naomi said to Ruth, Your people shall be my people. The dignity of Hagar can be seen in Bedouin women who in weaving beautiful carpets also weave a new and better future for their children. They have opened a school in Hagar s name where Palestinian and Israeli children can learn together. We will see the face of Mary, the mother of Jesus, in those who everyday magnify God s love in the love and compassion for those victimized by a brutal occupation. In Nabi Saleh, in the home of 17 year old Ahed Tamimi, we will be reminded of a young woman from Magdala who refused to be intimidated by those in power. In Nablus, we will be reminded of a Samaritan woman who offered a cool drink to Jesus, a Jew, and in that hospitality reminded us of how crossing boundaries and comfort zones and transcending stereotypes can help to build a new and better future for us all. ln traditional Palestinian Dabke Dances, singers and ancient instruments such as the oud, we will remember the spirit of Miriam who with her tambourine and dance helped to keep alive the hopes and dreams of her people. This journey will be led by 2 remarkable women, Ghoufran Allababidi, President of Tree of Life Educational Fund and Mary Tomassetti, Executive Director of Tree of Life. Serving as chaplains for the journey will be Colleen Keyes, former Vice President and Dean of Student Affairs at Zaytuna College and Muslim leader in the interfaith community, and Laura Fitzpatrick-Nager, Senior Associate Minister of The First Congregational Church of Old Lyme, CT. Although this journey will have a special focus on the role of women from biblical times to the present; all men and women are welcome!
