1 Windmill First Presbyterian Church 800 Jefferson St. Kerrville TX (830) February 21, 2016 Annual Congregational/corporate Meeting February 21, following the 11:00 a.m. service for the purpose of reviewing the 2016 budget; electing deacons to fill the terms vacated by Gary Garbish and Judy Gausnell; hear a report from the Personnel Committee to amend the terms of call for the Rev. Dr. Rob Lohmeyer; and hear a report from the Planning and Training Committee regarding electing a new Officer Nominating Committee (ONC): Judy Vaught (Chair), Nancy Mallory (Vice Chair), Lauren Liljestrand (Deacon), Warren Ferguson (At Large), Tim Summerlin (At Large), Jane Ragsdale (At Large), Blake Smith (At Large), Liz Murray (At Large), Marcus Goodyear (At Large). Something to celebrate!! The Abiding Legacy Endowment Fund of First Presbyterian Church was formally established in 2008 with over $500,000. The session, upon recommendation of the Planned Giving Committee, has voted to share our blessings with others in our community. To that end we will be making two gifts this year: $30,000 will go to the Dietert Center for the expansion of their kitchen, allowing them to prepare more food for their Meals on Wheels program, and $14,000 will be given to the Hill Country Youth Ranch to help rebuild their Art and Music Building after a devastating fire. Mark your calendars now for our celebration and presentation of checks to these two worthy non-profits at a luncheon after the 11:00 a.m. worship service on Sunday, March 20, More details to follow. submitted by Judy Ferguson 3rd Annual Family Night Supper Chili Cook-off Get Your Peppers On! Join the Fellowship Committee on Wednesday, February 24 for a great evening of fun, music and of course, chili. The event will begin at 5:30 p.m. (5:00 p.m. for all contestants) in the Family Life Center. Bring chili to be judged or just to share. There will be 2 divisions for judging: INDIVIDUAL and TEAM. Special celebrity judges will be judging those entries that are competing. You must call the Church office at (830) by February 22 to enter. Only the first 10 who sign up will be judged. If you choose not to compete, you may still bring your favorite chili recipe or a side dish (cornbread, salad, dessert). 2 Friendship Bible Study led by LeRoy Schlechte, room 208 The Gospel of Matthew is a treasure of Jesus' teachings, both to His inner circle of disciples, and to the crowd that His presence invariably attracted. In addition to His teachings, most of His recorded miracles are included in Matthew. Join us as we explore further this rich heritage of "The Words and Works of Jesus Christ;" (i.e., a borrowed book title). We'll probably be in or near chapter 12 in early March. We're the Friendship Class, where we make a special effort to be welcoming; a combination of lecture, sharing and discussion. Faith Seeking Understanding led by Judy Ferguson, room 207 The definition of theology has often been given as faith seeking understanding. In this class we will seek to understand how the faith of John Calvin evolved into reformed theology and how over the past 500 years the reformed tradition has given voice to semper reformanda, reformed and always being reformed. Using modern scholarship, we will explore the essential tenets of the Reformed Faith and the meaning of those for modern Christians of the Presbyterian persuasion. The Wired Word: the Church in Society led by Sonny Payne, Ryan Hall The class will take a different topic from the news each week, and discuss ways the church might respond to those events. This will be the fourth time this popular class has been offered, and if you have attended before you are still on the advance distribution list of topics; if not, please buckwood@ktc.com and you will be added. Illuminating Journey s End led by Gretchen Rye and Nancy Mallory, room 206 There are far, far better things ahead than any we leave behind - C.S. Lewis Illuminating Journey s End is an informational as well as group discussion based on conversations regarding the last chapters in our life. Together we will explore topics like caregiving, financial planning, how to have conversations with your family, our changing body and mind, and more. 3 Melanie Houdeshell, a life-long Presbyterian, grew up in Ohio and attended The Ohio State University. After college, Melanie had a career in the banking industry holding positions in Training and Development, Branch Management and Commercial Lending. Melanie and her husband, Tom, joined First Presbyterian Church 14 years ago when they moved to Kerrville from South Carolina. Melanie previously served our church as a member of the Pastor Nominating Committee, Building Task Force, Director of Vacation Bible School, as well as a Deacon. Outside the church, Melanie has served on the board of a number of organizations, including the Symphony of the Hills, Kerrville Jr. Service Guild, Hill Country Charity Ball Association, and the Nimitz Elementary School PTO. Currently Melanie stays busy with the many activities of their three children, Andrew (14 in April), Evan (12) and Elyse (9). JoAnn Jones has been a member for a long time. She wants to say 30 years but she s not sure. She and Richard moved to Kerrville from Omaha, Nebraska where Richard was stationed at Offut Air Base. She was born in Texas and wanted to return. The Rev. Dick Ryan was pastor at that time and they just loved him. Their daughter grew up in the church and was married in the chapel. They have wonderful memories of First Presbyterian. Jo Ann worked for the Schreiner Bank for 5 years until an opening at Tivy High School became available. She then taught bookkeeping for 5 years and then was transferred to the Central Office. She spent 34 years in the school district as Personnel Director and Secretary to the Board of Trustees. She was responsible for school elections each year, checking all routes to make sure only students in the Kerrville District were attending and collecting tuition from parents that lived in other districts but wanted their children to attend Kerrville. She has three former students that are now members of First Presbyterian, and she is proud of all three. They have lots of fun together. JoAnn has been President of the Women of the Church and is a life member, of which she is very proud. JoAnn has taught Sunday school for all age groups, has helped in areas such as preparing food for Church suppers and funerals, and has worked with Mike Busby and the youth. She has helped with everything but cleaning floors or changing diapers, which she says she can do, but no one has ever asked her! JoAnn will feel honored to be a Deacon and serve her congregation in that way. She feels this is a great way for her to give love to those in need, and some day someone will help her. From the Diaconate Many thanks to all who attended the "Meet Your Deacon" opportunity on the 14 th. The Deacons had a great time sharing with all who attended. The little blue piece of paper called "Flock List, Division of Names" can be very valuable in creating better communication between the congregation and the Deacons. Please use this to share concerns of those in our church family that could otherwise be overlooked. It's all about CARING and SHARING! 4 Souper Bowl of Caring Wrap-Up Thank you for your generous donations on Souper Bowl of Caring Sunday. Over 200 items of non-perishable food and $ , were collected to be divided between CAM, Hope s Kitchen, St. Vincent de Paul, and Blessings in a Backpack at Tom Daniels Elementary. Our young disciples learn the importance of giving and helping others by following your example. BOG Squad Members: Front Row: Beth Cunningham, Adonia Umfress, Adiya Umfress, Keaton Mitchell Back row: Emilia Graham, Josh Graham Jr., Joey Rodriguez, Robert Jackson FPC member Dr. Bob Bowers inducted into Paul Harris Fellowship of Rotary Dr. Bob Bowers, a retired eye surgeon and long-time member of First Presbyterian Church of Kerrville, has been inducted into the Paul Harris Fellowship of Rotary International. The Fellowship, named for the founder of Rotary, provides funding for Rotary Foundation campaigns to wipe out polio, malaria, hunger, and diseases transmitted by polluted water and human waste in developing nations. Douglas Whinnery, a Past District Governor of Rotary and a former Treasurer of First Presbyterian, inducted Bowers into the Fellowship during the weekly meeting of the Rotary Club of Kerrville. Whinnery noted that Bowers and his late wife, Marianne, and FPC members Dr. Jack Thurmond and his wife Lois, had made many medical mission trips to Central and South America and the Caribbean. Bowers was sponsored for the Paul Harris Fellowship by Rotarian and First Presbyterian member, Joseph Benham. Paul Harris Fellows are among the 1.2 million members of Rotary International worldwide. Prayer During Lent During the season of Lent, you are encouraged to participate in a season of prayer in Schreiner Chapel weekdays (except Wednesdays until after 1:00 p.m.). You may enter through the Education building lobby during office hours. Scriptures for the day and other meditation materials will be there if you wish to use them. Let us join our hearts and minds as we dedicate this season to pray for our church, our community, and our world. submitted by Judy Ferguson, Spiritual Formation team Lent Covenant Group On Tuesdays, for the six weeks before Easter, from 9:00 to 9:50 a.m. in Ryan Hall we will convene a covenant group to share readings, observations, and prayers to deepen our Lenten practices. This year we will use Lenten material prepared by Rev. Dr. Fane Downs in 2011 using Holy Scripture and Celtic Christian traditional material.
