1 Voters approve renovation projects Five-part proposal for repairs, upgrades Voting members of Galilee Lutheran Church have approved a five-part proposal for facility repairs, upgrades and improvements. That action was the response of about 95 members to the proposal from the Renovation Task Force at a May 20 congregational meeting. Voters also authorized the Church Council to obtain a loan from the Church Extension Fund of the Southeastern District, Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod to serve as bridge financing while members are invited to commit to extra offerings during the next three years to finance these projects: UPGRADING the sanctuary with painting, a combination of carpeting and flooring, a combination of new pews and chairs (on the sides) and tinting windows to help with screen visibility. UPGRADING the narthex (lobby) with new flooring, enhanced lighting and flexible seating and painting. EXTENDING the narthex by enclosing part of the portico (covered porch area) to the east, including a new sideway entry from the parking lot and an area for afterworship fellowship and refreshments. REPAVING and upgrade the parking lot. UPGRADING the lawn sign to digital operation, expanding the media booth in the sanctuary and placing monitors so the service can be seen in the narthex and fellowship hall. According to President Bob Cosler, projected cost for the projects is about $380,000. Planned funding was detailed in an April letter to congregational members. Bob said another letter will be coming, as Galilee prepares for Commitment Sunday June 9/10. Members will be asked to commit to supporting the renovation through several options, ranging from a special offering to praying for the effort. EXPANDING the narthex (lobby) by enclosing part of the portico on the west end of our facilities was approved by voters on May 20. This will provide a new entrance area, with a sidewalk to the parking lot, as well as a space for after-worship refreshments and coffee close to the sanctuary. Henry Simon after serving since November 2005 as Galilee s pastor. Worship themes and details are: SHINING is the theme for May 26/27, as we reach the pivot point of the church year and begin the Season after Pentecost. We ll explore the idea of choosing a life verse to give us direction and meaning from Scripture as we seek to follow Jesus. The text for the sermon will be 2 Corinthians 4:5-7. We also will recognize active duty and veteran military in our annual Armed Forces Sunday observance. ALL ABOUT JESUS is the theme for June 2/3. Worship will begin at 4:30 pm Saturday, but with just one service on Sunday at 9:30 am (this Sunday only), as Pastor Hank preaches his final sermon as Galilee s pastor and goes into retirement. A luncheon marking his final Sunday at Galilee will begin at noon at the Chartwell Country Club, Severna Park.

2 From Simon of Galilee Some final Q & A Q: How do you feel as you retire after 46 years as a pastor? A: Grateful. If I had to do my life over, I would choose again to be a pastor. From early on, print journalism was and still is a love of mine. But I felt that if God could use me as a pastor, I wanted to answer that call. I am thankful to be used by His Spirit to serve people with the love of Jesus. Q: What s your best memory of pastoral ministry? A: There are too many to narrow down to one. Baptizing our three children and three of our grandsons. Serving twice as a volunteer chaplain for English-speaking tourists in Wittenberg, the German hometown of Martin Luther including preaching in the churches where he preached. Seeing lay leaders grow spiritually and sharing in ministry with them. Q: You ve worked weekends many years. How will you fill them? A: Initially, by sitting with Mary in the pew. My focus will shift from leading worship to being a worshiper, not thinking about what I have to do next in the service. As far as serving as a pastor in Florida, I have nothing planned... except to see where the Lord leads. Q: What will you miss most? A: Being a helpful part of people s lives: Baptisms. Communing people by first name. Funerals and memorial services. Encouraging faithfulness in church attendance. Teaching Bible classes where I can learn from others and at times share my struggles. Seeing congregations like Galilee pull together and achieve what some had thought couldn't happen. Q: How do you think people will remember your ministry? A: Different people will have different memories, depending on how we interacted. I would hope my legacy at Galilee is of an encouraging, equipping, caring, thoughtful pastor who pointed people to Jesus in good times and bad. As a playing coach, I and congregational leaders have served together. But while administration and other areas of ministry are important for a pastor, I like the way Lutherans use the term pastor from the Latin word for shepherd. I tried to serve Jesus as His shepherd here at Galilee. Q: 46 years is a long time. What's your final takeaway? A: I had been a pastor for a third of a century - 33 years - before coming to Galilee. I had served on a college campus during my seminary vicarage (internship), assisted in an inner city congregation, made three overseas trips to report on mission work literally around the world and pastored a small city suburban congregation of a major Midwestern city. What a blessing to see how God can work through very human tools - like me - to share His accepting and forgiving Away on Sunday? Come to worship at 4:30 pm Saturday As the weather turns warmer and you look forward to outside activities on the weekend, there s a worship option if you re gone on Sunday. Galilee offers a come as you are casual dress, informal, contemporary service starting at 4:30 pm Saturday. Living Water Worship includes the same Scriptures, sermon, prayers and creed as the Sunday services. Communion is on the second, fourth and fifth weekends. Songs are from Christian contemporary music, supported by Celebration Sound, our praise band. Saturday worship is an option to keep in mind! 3 Raising Up Young Leaders BY EMILY PHOENIX Director of Discipleship IN A RECENT COUNCIL OPENING, I challenged our leaders to recognize the many ways our youth serve at Galilee and consider how they could be a part of nurturing and building up young leaders, too. I referenced an article where the author, Brandon Metcalf reminds us that our youth are gifted children of God who are meant to use their gifts to build of the church and the world in the name of Christ. Our middle school, high school and young adult students serve in a variety of ways at Galilee including as worship volunteers (acolytes, media booth, lector, bell choir, musicians) as well as at many annual events like Trunk or Treat, Egg Hunt, and the Patriotic Dinner, to name a few. Often the conversation among adults is How can we get youth more connected? In order to answer that question, I would challenge you to ask it of yourself. In other words, What keeps you connected to Galilee? THE RESOUNDING RESPONSE from many is: the people and the community. So, if we want our youth connected at Galilee, we have responsibility in helping bring them into our community of faith. Here are a few ways for you to consider how you can have a positive impact in raising up our youth as Christlike servant leaders: LEAD BY EXAMPLE by attending worship and Bible study. Our young people are observant about who is participating in worship, volunteering and serving in leadership roles. If they see you attending and participating faithfully, they will understand that it s possible for them, too. INTRODUCE YOURSELF and check in with youth when you see them on the weekends. Building relationships is the key to success in ministry. We must interact with one another and encourage those around us, especially the youth, who are finding out who they are. What an opportunity we have to remind them of whose they are in Christ! PLUG THEM IN to areas of ministry that don t currently have any youth serving. Could a ministry team benefit from a youth representative? Invite them to the congregational meeting. They may not be able to vote yet, but it s of value to encourage them to be educated on what is going on at church and how they can be a part of it. This verse from 1 Timothy is one of my favorites, because it is God himself empowering our young leaders through the gift of the Holy Spirit. Don t let anyone look down on you because you are young, but set an example for the believers in speech, in conduct, in love, in faith and in purity. 1 Timothy 4:12 Opportunities to grow in God s Word Sundays Memorial Day Weekend special class session will begin at 9:15 am May 27 in the upstairs preschool room with opportunities for students to make cards for those who are currently serving in our military. 5 Biblesticks total hits 68! The Lay Ministry Team campaign to purchase Military Biblesticks has already surpassed our goal of 50 and have reached 68 Biblesticks! These Biblesticks (audio New Testaments and Psalms) provide God s peace and hope to service personnel and their families. Each $25 we collect will buy one service member and his or her family the gift of God s Word and hope. You may support this cause through Memorial Day weekend by checking out the red box on the information table in the narthex (lobby). Contact Lay Ministry Team Coordinator Debbie Bangert with questions ( or layministry@galileelutheranchurch.org). Thank you! - DB A SURPRISE LUNCH was held on Saturday, April 28 for Betty Johnston, Galilee s secretary who served her last day on May 4. She has retired with her husband Eddie with a move to North Carolina. She recently wrote, Words cannot express how very thankful I am for the love and support I have been blessed to receive from my second family here at Galilee during the five years I served as the church office secretary. We welcome our new secretary S. Dawn Whittaker who comes to us with over 20 years of administrative experience and looks forward to meeting everyone. Please stop by and say hello! ALL GENERATIONS IN TOW at the Spring Thing with, from left, Mary Beth LaPier, Myrle Pugh, Kathy and & Darley Bauer serving treats to visitors. The Lutheran Women s Missionary League (LWML) Spring Thing flea market was a big success. Thanks to all the people who gave aid and support: Boy Scout Troop 000, bakers, donators of items for LWML tables, those who served at the tables and priced items and those who took part in food, fun and fellowship. Once again we were blessed with great weather and volunteers, to God be the glory! - Pat Archibald Transition Team formed at Galilee As we approach Pastor Hank s retirement, Galilee enters into a new season of transition. Before the call process for a new pastor can begin, it s important to make sure the congregation can continue to minister to its families and the surrounding community, living out our mission of Sharing God s Love, Changing Lives! A transition team has been formed, chaired by Rob Bangert. Team members include Sarah Jammal, Cindy Ward, Krissy Anderson and Judy Engelmeyer. Director of Discipleship, Emily Phoenix serves as staff consultant. One of our primary responsibilities is to lift this process up in prayer and help the congregation do the same. A Prayer Corner is on the back cover of the weekly bulletin with a specific request or prayer for you to add to your weekly prayers. The Transition Team is also focused on discussion regarding who will take on responsibilities of the pastor in this season of change. The team plans to provide updates throughout the summer on their progress through various publications and social media. Thanks for your continued prayers and support! 6 Upcoming Youth Events & Recap of 30-Hour Famine Galilee Youth will hold our end-of-year "Picnic on the Portico" at 6 pm Saturday, June 2, All youth in sixth -12th grade, college-age and their families are invited to this event! There will be burgers, hotdogs and drinks provided by the Youth Ministry Team. Families should bring a side dish to share. We need a couple people to man the grills. Please let Jean know if you can take on that task. 30-HOUR FAMINE - Only a few youth participated in the 30 Hour World Vision Famine, but by joining with the Men's Bible Breakfast group, we were able to accomplish much. Noelle Somers, Ms. Emily, Mr. Chris and Ms. Jean packed over 100 'hygiene' kits donated to Orphan Grain Train by a local Eagle Scout for shipment to Liberia. The photo at left shows Noelle and Chris Meier packing hygiene kits. Some of the men prepared bicycles (a lot of bicycles) for shipping also. Then we all joined in to repackage almost 110 boxes of books to meet the requirements of Liberia's stringent import policies. Everyone was tired, but satisfied that we had done a good job when we finished around noon, then it was time to go ride go karts as it was such a beautiful afternoon. YOUTH PARTICIPATING in the Famine worked to build a shelter that would serve to protect two-five people out of materials available. The activity took a bit longer than expected, but results were good! We did confirm during the later feast that at least three people could easily laydown in the shelter - especially if they were children. We took a bit of time after building to do a short study on famine around the world with Mr. Chris. THE DAY WAS FINISHED up with worship at the Saturday service and then our Feast. Parents brought our favorite food and all of us relaxed and enjoyed eating. Thanks to all the youth participating either directly by joining us or by giving up food or phones to raise money for World Vision Famine relief. Thanks also to the Men s Bible Breakfast group who let us join in on your work day! And thanks to all the parents and other adults who helped with the 30 Hour Famine! LASTLY, it is NOT too late to give donations either on-line or to one of the youth collecting money. To contribute on-line go to the Galilee Youth Team Page at or directly to one of the youths participating including Noelle Somers, Tyler Stone, Will Ward, Alex Lichtner or Zach Hightower. YOUTH: All fund raising packets should be turned in by May 27 to Ms. Jean or put in the Youth Mailbox outside the office! Jean Hase, Youth Counselor BREAKFAST AND SINGING made for a wonderful Mother s Day celebration for Sunday School families. This also served as the end of the year celebration, with gifts for all students. After the children sang in worship, they gifted their moms w i t h c a r n a t i o n s. Thanks to Sarah Jammal and all the Sunday School staff for heir time and commitment in sharing Jesus with the children this school year!

7 From the President s Desk Greetings in the name of Jesus from Bob Cosler. MORE GOOD NEWS is here as God continues to shower us with His grace and love. Dawn Whittaker has accepted the position of church secretary/office assistant recently vacated by Betty Johnston. Dawn trained with Betty, before Betty retired. We offer thanks that God has again directed a capable, caring person to this position. Welcome, Dawn! Best wishes and Godspeed to Betty and Eddie, who have traveled to their new home in North Carolina. We will miss Betty s bright smile and cheerful disposition. I ll personally miss the playful barbs that we shot at each other on a regular basis. THE GOOD NEWS just keeps on coming with the election of a Pastoral Call Committee by the Church Council. I will lead this committee of dedicated members: Krissy Anderson, Jim Burke, Peggy Gray, Ray MacFarlane, Gene Sanders and Cindy Ward. Jane Strong will serve as Church Council representative on the committee. On Saturday, May 5, Galilee s Transition Team met with Rev. Don Schaeffer, our regional mission and ministry facilitator, via ifacetime, a video conferencing application. Rev. Schaeffer led the team through the development of the congregational profile provided by the Southeastern District of the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod. THE INTENT OF THIS PROFILE is to help us understand ourselves as a congregation and the unique call to ministry that we will be making to a pastor. The information in the profile will also help District President John Denninger to understand the needs and opportunities of the congregation. Finally, this profile will help the pastor we call to evaluate how well his gifts match the congregations needs and opportunities. Rev. Schaeffer will be helping the team to extract the most germane questions from the full profile. These questions will then be communicated to the congregation for completion. With your help, the congregational profile should be completed, and the results tabulated, by the end of May. The results will help Galilee s Pastoral Call Committee to communicate clearly our congregational needs for both permanent and intentional interim pastors. JUST A NOTE of caution: Galilee has been through the pastoral call process several times before. Not all those times resulted in satisfaction for Galilee or for the called pastor. The Southeastern District, LCMS has taken the time and considerable effort to define a process that has the best chance for matching a pastor with the needs and opportunities of a given congregation. It is my strong belief that we must show good faith and follow this process. Above all, remember that God already knows who our next pastor should be. If we study His Word, and pray for His guidance, this time will allow us to discern His will for us. I have asked our prayer team, led by Pauline Lewis, to pray for Galilee and its leadership daily. Please include a prayer for Galilee and its leadership in your daily worship. Blessings and joy to you all. Bob Cosler (tug2202@outlook.com)

9 Bible class spends Men s Network Work Day at OGT warehouse Seven members of the Men s Breakfast Bible Class spent Saturday morning, May 12 serving at the Orphan Grain Train (OGT) warehouse in Millersville. Their effort was part of the Lutheran Hour Ministries (LHM) Men s Network national Work Day. Serving with them were six youth and adults involved in the Galilee Youth 30-Hour Famine for World Vision, raising funds to fight world hunger. Ron Phipps, assistant manager of the OGT Maryland Branch, said, The wonderful volunteers from Galilee made a terrific contribution. EACH COUNTRY to which we ship has their own customs regulations. Liberia happens to be the most peculiar and rigorous requirements of them all. Nevertheless, the good folk of Galilee attacked the assignment with good humor, energy, and dedication. In addition to adjusting the handlebars on scores of bicycles to enable them to packed in a 40-foot container more compactly, they packed 22 boxes of hygiene kits and (get this) 114 boxes of books--in which the contents of each box had to be counted. They ended up counting thousands of books! It was a wonderful day! Thank you! OGT IS A 501c3 Nonprofit Christian volunteer network which originated with LHM and now shares personal and material resources with needy people in America and around the world. Orphan Grain Train Photo Current Fund in the red a bit as first quarter ends April Current Fund financial figures reported to the Church Council are: Offerings: $39,603 Expenses: $40,299 Balance: ( $ 696) This results in a year-to-date deficit of $548. While offerings for the first four months were $2,806 over budget, expenses were $3,354 over budget. This included a high bill for propane in April and the semi-annual insurance premium of about $3,900. Thanks to all those members and friends of Galilee who have been faithful with their offerings also when they were away, either traveling or kept at home because of illness. This reflects an understanding that generous giving is needed to fund the ministry of Galilee. That includes those weekends when you are not in worship but your church continues to serve 365 days a year on this peninsula and beyond as a mission outpost for Jesus Christ.

Council preps for decision The May 8 monthly meeting of the Church Council focused on preparing for the May 20 congregational meeting at which the proposal of the Renovation Task Force would be considered. Council members previously had unanimously endorsed the proposal, which resulted in a mailing with details going to congregational members a month ago. Three open forums were held on a Saturday afternoon, Wednesday evening and Sunday between services to give members time to ask questions about the proposal. (See Page 1 for story on the proposal, which voters did approve at the May 20 meeting). President Bob Cosler presented details on a capital campaign proposal to fund the estimated $380,000 cost of the renovation projects. He indicated the proposal would be shared in several ways with the congregation. Bob added, What I personally want out of this campaign is for people to experience the joy that I get out of being generous. A mailing about funding the renovations will be going soon to Galilee members. (See article at left about Commitment Weekend, which will follow the mailing). In other news from the meeting: SECURITY: Preschool Ministry Team Coordinator Cheryl Blankinship reported on recommendations about preschool security resulting from a survey by Anne Arundel County Police personnel. Discussion resulted about new doors, locked doors and access to various preschool areas, including when the new class for two-year-olds meets during the mornings.
