1 Evangel May 1, 2018 What an honor to be able to engage so many of our members and congregations in this exciting biennial meeting of our denomination right here at home. General Synod Shine! From Wisconsin Conference Minister Franz Rigert For the first time in our history, the Wisconsin Conference will welcome UCC delegates and friends from all over the country, and mission partners from all over the world when we host General Synod 32 in Milwaukee in 2019! The Wisconsin Conference has long been one of the strongest conferences in all of the United Church of Christ. It is time for us to roll out the welcome mat to our sisters and brothers in Christ. Our congregation can be a part of this exciting endeavor! The highlights of General Synod include: inspiring worship, compelling keynote speakers, UCC business sessions, exhibit booths and education forums related to resolutions brought forth for debate. As followers of Jesus, we in the UCC believe in bold prophetic witness and advocacy when it comes to issues of inclusion, justice and compassion. The Synod gathering will embrace the social movements of our time- our concerns about sexual harassment, gun violence, climate changes and racial injustice. We will need lots of volunteers to work as parking and hotel lobby attendants, distribute hospitality gifts, assist with special events, etc. Our Synod leadership team is preparing to launch sign ups in early 2019, so stay tuned! What we really need right now is seed money for our hosting to cover the estimated $40,000 cost of our local arrangements. Can we join with congregations across Wisconsin in making a contribution?

2 Easter Sunday-Cross of Lilies Thank you to those that helped to make the Cross of Lilies for our Easter Sunday Service. We are looking forward to two baptisms coming up in the next couple of months. Braylee Pevey and Ella Giesfeldt Congratulations to both sets of parents for this joyous upcoming event. Kids Church Sharing of Members Stories Across The Generations We will continue in May with members sharing their stories each Sunday during the worship service. Making cards for the Homebound These cards bring joy to a lot of the individuals that can no longer make it to church. We currently have 12 homebound members, if you wish to send them cards or notes, please drop them at the church office and we will be glad to send them out and put a smile on someone s face.

Steve Hoagland and Andrew Bullis are working to layout the directory and will have it to Life Touch Directory soon. We should be getting our directories back from the Printers in short order. Special Presentation coming Marion Schmidt A longtime member of St Pauls Church, including 5 generations of family passed away on Sunday April 22 nd at the age of 100 yr. A celebration of life will be taking place on what would have been her 101 st birthday, June 10th Exploration of Shared Ministry At a specially called congregational meeting on March 4th, it was voted unanimously to approve entering into a shared ministry with another nearby congregation. Our Associate Conference Minister, Rev. Jane Anderson, explained shared ministry in more detail including her history of working with several congregations across Southeast and Northeast Wisconsin which have gone through or are going through the shared ministry process. She also advised, after learning about the needs of St. Pauls, that a full-time Pastor would not be financially possible unless there was a substantial increase in membership. Possible partner churches are currently being explored. One congregation has agreed explore a shared ministry with St. Pauls, and conversations will begin at the end of April. Our leadership, plus members from our Search Committee, will be meeting with the leadership of that congregation then. More information to come after that meeting. Large- Print Bulletins We are experimenting with trying to print out a couple of larger print bulletins each week. Please give your thoughts on this; all pros and cons are welcome.

5 Why a Cemetery Fund Envelope? Great Lakes Regional Youth Event There is a youth rally coming up that may interest 4-5 of our youth; this is held every 4 years and this year is at Elmhurst College, west of Chicago. Dates for this event are July 5-8 th. The Youth Event theme is: A Just Worlk for All: Your Voice Matters! GLRYE is open to all youth grades 6-12 (youth who have finished 6 th grade through those who have just finished 12 th grade) Registration through June 1- $325 per person for double occupancy room. Late registration through June 15- $250 per person for double occupancy. This registration fee includes lodging, event t- shirt and meals. There is a $50 non-refundable processing fee for all registrations. Refunds (minus the $50 processing fee) will be make for cancellations submitted and confirmed before June 1. Cancellations make after Jun 1 will not be refunded. MOVE IN: Registration will open at 3pm on Thursday, July 5 th MOVE OUT: GLRYE will conclude at 12 noon on July 8 th By Wisconsin state statues every cemetery must have a perpetual care fund. The interest income generated by this fund is to be used to take care of the annual expenses for maintaining the cemetery. The cemetery committee works hard to keep these costs down. With your packet of giving envelopes there is included and envelope marked for the cemetery fund. Please consider making a donation for the up keep of our church cemetery. St.Pauls cemetery was established in 1868 along with our church and has been serving our members for 150 years also. I am feeling quite well but tire very easily. I am blessed with family and friends who have been wonderful. Joanne Riley 150 th Anniversary Celebration As part of the 150th Anniversary Celebration, Women's Fellowship will host a Salad Luncheon on Sunday May 20th following the church service. The luncheon is being planned as a potluck with 'fancy' salads, such as pasta

6 salads, fancy jello, fruit salad, potato salad, taco salad etc. Dessert donations are also being sought. If you would like to have lunch, but don't want to make a salad or dessert, there will be a free will offering collected during lunch. There is a sign-up sheet in Guild Hall for donations and to register attendance. Please join us for this fellowship to celebrate our 150 th year Final Service of Worship May 20 Congregational United Church of Christ, Brown Deer, will hold its final service of worship on Pentecost Sunday afternoon, May 20, 1 p.m. All are invited to join the remaining members to celebrate the congregation s 58 years of Christian witness. The Brown Deer congregation was incorporated in 1960 with charter members from North Shore Congregational and Plymouth Congregational churches. The Milwaukee Association of Congregational Churches welcomed Brown Deer s 45 members in January, The congregation later elected to join the United Church of Christ. Their first full-time minister, Rev. William C. Bishop, preached his first sermon on Easter Sunday, Services were held at St Martin s Episcopal Church until the new building at 64th Street and Dean Road was completed in July Since 2002 the congregation has shared its building with Faith in Christ Hmong Alliance. Rev. Greg Young has served as pastor since Let us, the members of the Southeast Association, surround this congregation with our prayers and presence on Pentecost Sunday, May 20, at 1 p.m. Saturday, May 12, 2018 The food pantry is looking for and in need of A LOT of help sorting the donations from the post office food drive. They will need people from 1:30pm until 5:30pm and again on Monday, May 14 th from 9am until they get the facility back in order for Tuesday s distribution. Strengthen the Church Offering Pentecost Sunday, May 20, 2018 we will be receiving the offering for this event. We will include Bulletin Insert and offering envelopes starting on Sunday, May 6 th. Please join in planting the seeds needed to grow and sustain our denomination by making a gift to the Strengthen the Church offering. Sunday, May 13 Mother s Day we are excited to have the Childrens Bell chimes playing at the service.
