2 May 2017 Pastor Greg s BDB (Beaver Dam Blog) Well, it was finally my turn. Our fellowship was hit pretty hard this winter and spring with the cold and flu bug, and I almost managed to escape unscathed (outside of a brief horrible incident just after Christmas) but, alas, it finally got me just before Easter. Overall it hasn t been too bad, more of a nuisance that just appears to be hanging on and hanging on, making me not want to do any type of legitimate work but just wanting to stay home and watch Netflix all day (but I haven t I ve been a good boy). After a week of this and then finally deciding to go to the doctor, I was told that it lasts about 2 weeks and that all she could give me was medicine to help manage the symptoms. So here I am.waiting to get well again. But when we re feeling down and out those are good times to reflect on our situation and what life has thrown at us. It s during times like these when we realize that we are ultimately not in control of our own lives. There are forces out there which can wreck the mightiest of plans. A little cold can change our path for a little while but sometimes there are far bigger events which intersect with our path and force us careening off in an unplanned direction. These are good times to remember that we serve a God who directs the steps of the godly (Proverbs 16.9) and promises to be with us at all times (Matthew 28.20). As much as we like to be independent (as good bootstrap-pulling up by ourselves Americans) when we re sick we love it when people serve us. When they make us soup, run to the store for medicine, clean up after us or hand us the remote (so we don t have to get up off the couch). In God s kingdom this is normal. When we choose to follow Jesus and become a part of God s family--we don t operate independently we re all connected. We serve with one another, we share with one another, we worship with one another, we forgive one another and we bear one another s burdens (there are 57 one anothers in the New Testament!). What a privilege that God has given us to work and worship and do life together as the family of God to know that we are never alone but part of a team (1 Corinthians 12.12ff). Just as a body, though one, has many parts, but all its many parts form one body, so it is with Christ. 1 Corinthians Finally, there s the reminder to be perseverant to keep going despite the hardship. Even though I don t feel up to going into the office and preparing a sermon or doing normal pastoral stuff, it s something that I need to press on and do.because it needs to be done. (Some things I ve held off on, like a post-easter visit to our shut-ins, because they certainly don t need my germs). Now, as I said at the outset, this cold isn t so much a hardship but a nuisance (one which I sometimes get dramatic about as my wife reminds me). But it still serves as a reminder that despite trials and tribulations and difficulties we still have a job to do. We are called to follow Jesus and be faithful in any and all situations. Life comes with many challenges, some small that last a day or so, while others may last for the rest of our life. But we must never forget that we have been called by a God who has promised us that His Spirit resides within us never to leave and he has blessed us with a Church fellow believers who will be by our side to help us do life. Jesus told his disciples I will not leave you as orphans (John 14.18). That s a nice thing to recall when you re having a rough patch in life. Now, pass me another cough drop. Greg
