2 Page 2 January 3, 2016 Dear Parishioners, Thank you very much for all your gifts and prayers at Christmas! You are good people! May God bless you! I witnessed your sharing of your time and talents! I witnessed your helping those in need! I witnessed most of all your belief that there is much more to life than material things! Altar Bread and Wine will be Offered in Memory of Jo Bergles Donated by The Bergles Family during the week of January 3, 2016 I will keep you in my prayers as we enter 2016 trusting in God. Trusting that He will provide for what we need! I know that for some of you that belief is a huge leap of faith because 2015 has been so hard on you. Please know you are not alone. God is with us, the worthy and the unworthy! The parish of St. John Brebeuf is with you in prayer and promises to do all it can to walk with you. Happy New Year! Father Mike Meany EPIPHANY BLESSING OF CHALK There is an old tradition, still practiced in many areas of the world where faithful Catholics bless their homes on the feast of Epiphany with blessed chalk. At St. John Brebeuf this practice has been continued with the annual blessing of chalk at the Polish Masses on this day. This year the tradition is being shared with the entire parish. Chalk will be blessed at the end of every Mass on January 3, You are invited to take a piece of chalk and make the inscription 20+C+M+B+14 over the main doorway of your home on the inside. The letters stand for the latin "Christus Mansionem Benedicat"- May Christ bless this house. The letters also point to the names that tradition has assigned to the mysterious magi, Caspar, Melchior, and Balthasar. The crosses in between the letters represent the protection of the Precious Blood of Christ whom we invoke so that all who enter and depart our homes may enjoy God's blessing. This tradition also provides a very public witness to our faith and will surely stimulate questions from others as to the meaning of this "writing above the door" and be an opportunity to share our faith in the Word made Flesh- Jesus Christ our Lord. Deacon Mariusz Kosla

3 January 3, 2016 Page 3 LOOKING IN THE RIGHT PLACES Appearances can be deceiving, as the saying goes. As we celebrate the epiphania, the appearing of the eternal Word of God on earth, this is still true. What rapturous foresight must have filled Isaiah as he wrote the words we hear today. How, for four hundred years, they must have filled the hearts of the people of Israel with hope for the day when God s glory would shine on them. How deceived some must have felt when the glory of God came to them in the lowliest and humblest of human lives. We have many expectations about how the divine presence will appear among us. But we can also set ourselves up, through these expectations, to miss the divine glory when it truly appears. We get caught up in looking for the star, forgetting that the star is not the divine sign, the babe is. It may take a persistent journey for us to come upon the true appearance of God s glory in our lives: Jesus Christ. READINGS FOR JANUARY 10 First Reading Isaiah speaks of the Servant whom the Lord upholds; he shall bring forth justice to the nations (Isaiah 42:1-4, 6-7) or Isaiah 40:1-5, Psalm The Lord will bless his people with peace (Psalm 29) or Psalm 104. Second Reading Jesus was anointed by God with the Holy Spirit; he went out healing and doing good (Acts 10:34-38) or Titus 2:11-14; 3:4-7. Gospel A voice comes from heaven proclaiming Jesus as the beloved Son, with whom God is well pleased (Luke 3:15-16, 21-22). Thank You! Dziekuje! With great appreciation the SJB Music Ministry wishes to thank everyone who attended our first fundraising event on Sunday, December 20 in the Parish Ministry Center. The luncheon was enjoyed by 75 holiday-spirited people, with lots of caroling taking place after we enjoyed a Kasia s Deli-catered lunch with cheese & olive tray, veggie platter, chicken picatta, sauerkraut, mushrooms and spinach pierogi, green beans sprinkled with almonds, mashed potatoes, red cabbage salad with walnuts and raisins and assorted dessert-kolaczi. What fun! Many thanks also to those who provided the setup/break down, decorations and musical talent. Fannie Mae candy bars were also offered as part of our fundraising. We appreciate you who continue to support the Music Ministry by donation, attendance and singing at our liturgies. It really makes a big difference! PERPETUAL EUCHARISTIC ADORATION Christ's followers were skeptical when He preached the reality of His Body and Blood as food and drink. St. John said, "many of His disciples withdrew and no longer went about with Him." Seeing this, Jesus asked the Twelve, "Do you also want to leave me?" Simon Peter did not understand any more than those who left Christ, but his loyalty was more firm. "Lord," he said, "to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life." We have the "Word of Eternal Life" right here with us day and night in our Adoration Chapel. Do you have something you want to ask Him? There are several hours needing adorers. Please pick one for your personal hour with Him. 7 January 3, 2016 Page 7 Joy In Jesus Sunday Program The pre-school children in the Joy in Jesus Sunday program celebrated their Baptism with a holy water blessing. They learned the meaning of Advent and waiting for the birthday of Jesus by making an Advent wreath using fresh evergreen branches. The candles were lit for each week of Advent. For Christmas, they made ornaments and decorated a tree. The Joy in Jesus program is open to children ages 3 1/2 through kindergarten. Classes are held in the school during the 10:45 AM Mass each Sunday. The second half of this year s session will begin on January 3rd. There are several openings in the classes at this time. For information, call Charlotte Lindquist,

8 Page 8 January 3, 2016 We are again asking our parishioners to participate in this special fund-raiser to help women in crisis pregnancy situations by supporting the pro-life work of The Women's Centers of Greater Chicagoland starting on January 9 and 10, weekend. They provide kind and compassionate counseling to women in crisis pregnancies, along with ongoing material and financial assistance. They are Catholic-run, so the Mass and other prayers are said for women and babies every day in their chapel. This is a wonderful opportunity for parishioners of all ages, including children, to be able to work together to support "life". Baby bottles will be found in main entrances of church for you to take home and fill with spare change. Please return the bottles before any of the masses on the weekend of February Please take one bottle per family. Extras will be available in the back of the church the next couple of weekends if you fill up your first one. Thank you for participating in this worthy cause. We know that all babies are made in God s image and likeness; therefore they are worthy of our love. Just because some people say that unborn babies are less than human doesn t make it so. If we don t speak out in defense of the unborn, who will? Let us continue to pray daily: Jesus, Mary and Joseph, I love you very much. I beg you to spare the life of the unborn baby that I have spiritually adopted who is in danger of abortion. Join Archbishop Blase J. Cupich and priests from across the Archdiocese of Chicago for the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass as we petition the Lord to transform our society from a culture of death into a culture of life. The Archdiocesan Mass for Life will be celebrated at St. Cletus Parish, 600 West 55th Street in La Grange, on Saturday, January 9, at 5 p.m. At this Mass, we will remember the innocent children lost and the women, men and families hurt through abortion as we reflect on the 43rd anniversary of Roe v. Wade. CWC Board Meeting, Tuesday, January 5th at 7:00 p.m. (PMC) All Officers and Directors are expected to attend. Please call Carolyn Drblik at if you will/will not be able to attend. CWC General Meeting, Tuesday, January 12th at 7:00 p.m. (PMC) CWC is having a Bling Ladies Evening of Fun! Immediately following the CWC General Meeting. Jewelry by Premier Designs with the latest trends and fashion tips presented by Adejoke Oyewole. Join us for a dazzling evening! Wine & cheese will be served.

Niech Bóg Was błogosławi! Jesteście i będziecie w moich modlitwach, podczas wkraczania w 2016 rok, ufając Bogu. Ufając, że On zapewni to, czego potrzebujemy! Święto Objawienia Pańskiego Błogosławienie Kredy Istnieje stara tradycja, praktykowana do tej pory w niektórych częściach świata, w ramach której katolicy błogosławią w Święto Objawienia Pańskiego swoje domy, naznaczając je poświęconą kredą. Deacon Mariusz Kosla
