Husbands, love your wives as Christ loved the church. May is the month of weddings. Love flourishes with exceedingly great joy as men and women are united in holy matrimony. Ceremonies ornate and simple will usher in that joy this month as two become one flesh. The promise of spring adds the bloom of nature to a new reality that is embodied in the bridal party. Marriage is an extraordinary gift of great delight; a blessed gift of God. and gave Himself up for her. Weddings inevitably lead to marriages. The high gloss of pre-marital rapture usually gives way to a more realistic view of life together. Love still abides but the sensation of floating on air subsides. Marriage is a radical commitment. The vows one subscribes to at a marriage ceremony allow for no hedging. One could use contemporary vernacular and simply put it to the groom: Are you all in? The liturgical response would be: I am all in; till death us do part. and gave Himself up for her to make her holy, cleansing her by the washing with water through the word. What does it mean for husbands to love their wives? Certainly there is an element of affection. Perhaps, though, there is a deeper component. Love springs into action and delights in the responsibility to protect and the call to be faithful. Love is one of those central realities of life that is best understood within a constellation of other illuminating virtues. and gave Himself up for her to make her holy, cleansing her by the washing with water through the word, and to present her to Himself as a radiant church, without stain or wrinkle or any other blemish, but holy and blameless (Ephesians 5:25-27). Ultimately, marriage is a reflection of a greater reality the relationship that exists between Christ and His bride, the church. The true and enduring portrait of love is the portrait of Christ crucified. and gave Himself up for her to make her holy, cleansing her by the washing with water through the word. To love your wife is to sacrifice all you are and have for her well being. This is a high and noble calling. Such selfless love elevates both the lover and the beloved. Genuine masculinity is made known in sacrifice, fidelity, and unequivocal commitment. To all humanity Jesus has demonstrated this unqualified love; Father, forgive them! and gave Himself up for her. The blood shed by our heavenly bridegroom has washed the church in Holy Baptism. The imputed righteousness of Christ is the rationale behind women wearing white gowns in weddings. Amazing beauty! Every bride is an icon of the church, whom Christ loves with a suffering and sacrificial love. Every wife is a woman to be cherished, nurtured, and honored. Husbands, love your wives as Christ loved the church. Jesus said: I am the vine. You are the branches. If a man remains in Me and I in him, he will produce much fruit (John 15:5). The divine fruit of love is born in us and through us only as we are connected to the author of love. He feeds us with the undeserved grace of His dying sacrifice. That love cannot be stifled. That love is the heavenly fount which breaks out in the desert of dry hearts. The Gospel itself is the source of love and the church is the repository. Go and hear the Gospel. Go and hear of love divine. Go to church and hear of Christ crucified and arisen for you. May marriage flourish among us! May husbands love their wives as Christ loved the church! 4 GOOD SHEPHERD IN YUCAIPA, CALIFORNIA REV. MARK STIRDIVANT WAS INSTALLED AS PASTOR, APRIL 2, 2017 Pastor Mark Stirdivant was born and raised in Hemet, California, where his parents still reside. He attended college at Concordia University, Irvine, where he graduated Summa Cum Laude, and then attended Concordia Theological Seminary in Fort Wayne, Indiana. He sang and toured with the 16-voice men s choir, the Seminary Kantorei. He served his vicarage year at St. Peter Lutheran Church in Norwalk, Connecticut, under the tutelage of Rev. Robert Beinke. After a long-distance courtship and engagement, he married his wife Krika in In 2002, he was ordained into the Office of the Holy Ministry and installed at Holy Cross Lutheran Church in Kansas City, Missouri. In 2008 Pastor Stirdivant joined the Gladstone Public Safety department as a volunteer chaplain. He went on ride-alongs with the officers, attended roll-call meetings and occasionally attended to severely traumatic police calls. In June of this year, he will have completed 15 years in the Office of the Holy Ministry. Pastor and Krika have a Boston Terrier named Poppy, and all of them are very excited to be back home in California, and they look forward very much to getting to know you better! 6 CTK May 2017 Events NO COUPLES BIBLE STUDY See you in June! PROJECT GROUND-BREAKING God blesses and nurtures children in the truth of His love, manifested through His beloved Son, Christ the King. In the life of our church and school, we have come to an auspicious moment breaking ground as we prepare to construct a new school multipurpose building. We will intentionally implore God s blessings on our project this Friday, May 5th, at 7:00pm. This happy event will be preceded by a book fair in the parish hall for our preschool families at 6:00pm. All the saints of Christ the King are invited to take part in a joyful moment that praises God for His providence and blessing. CTK WOMEN S COFFEE FELLOWSHIP 3 RD TUESDAY, May 16 th AT 9AM Set aside an hour to enjoy some sisterly fellowship and café refreshments at the ESRI Café, located at 380 New York Street in Redlands (south of the post office). Hope to see you there. WEDNESDAY MORNING BIBLE STUDY Please join us on Wednesday mornings at 9:30am in St John the Evangelist Hall. Everyone is welcomed. LWML NEWS We just finished a great year with our LWML group. We had some great speakers this year. The LWML last event is coming up on Saturday May 6th from 2pm to 4pm with our spring fling which will be held at Barbara's Victorian Tea House, 7491 Etiwanda Ave, Etiwanda, CA The cost is $34.00 which includes a variety of teas, quiches, fruits, great sandwiches, and of course desserts. John Livingston will be entertaining us with beautiful piano music. So please come join us.
