2 Beth s Blessings March comes in like a lion, and goes out like a lamb. This year, March certainly comes roaring at us full of grief and passion stirred again by the pain of seventeen lives lost in a mass shooting at the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Florida. The lion roars at us in the response of students from that school and across the country rising up to beg for attention to their fear and insecurity at school. And this is only one among all the fears, insecurities, anxieties, tensions, conflicts, and destructive forces roaring around us. The psalmist expresses our cries to God: Watch me with the very pupil of your eye! Hide me in the protection of your wings, away from the wicked who are out to get me, away from my deadly enemies who are all around me! They are like a lion eager to rip its prey; they are like a strong young lion lying in wait. (Psalm 17:8-9, 12) On the Sunday after the killings at the Parkland High School, we heard the promise of God s covenant with all life. After the flood waters had subsided, God said to Noah: I will set up my covenant with you so that never again will all life be cut off by floodwaters. There will never again be a flood to destroy the earth. This is the symbol of the covenant that I am drawing up between me and you and every living thing with you, on behalf of every future generation. I have placed my bow in the clouds; and upon seeing it I will remember the enduring covenant between God and every living being of all the earth s creatures. (Genesis 9:11-12, 16) Even after roaring against our sin in the mighty flood waters, God loved us so to embrace our vulnerability, put the crossbow weapon of destruction away, and set this eternal covenant of life for every future generation. God still feels something when our sin leads to death and destruction of innocent lives. God still feels something Do we? Also this year the month of March falls entirely within the season of Lent, bringing Christians the lion s task of repentance both personal and corporate. It is a season for shaping us into disciples of Jesus Christ and a covenant community embracing the disciplines of faith in God: vulnerability; trust; Sabbath; attention; the unfolding mystery of God s amazing grace and abiding love. On the Sunday after the killings at the Parkland High School, our Sunday morning high school class heard about the prayer ministry at Lewis Memorial. They wrote their prayers on paper crosses and brought them before this covenant community and before God at the sanctuary altar. Our students invite us to pray with them for: attitudes; peace; nuclear mayhem; war; crooked politicians; what the internet is capable of; worldwide loss of creativity, positivity, and accountability; and school safety. God still feels something for all of these students prayers Do we? Even as this March arrives like a lion, let us commit ourselves fully to these days of Lent and the lion s task of repentance both personal and corporate, shaping us into disciples of Jesus Christ and a covenant community embracing the disciplines of faith in God. Just as God promised Noah after the flood, we can be assured the Lamb is with us throughout, and He will embrace us in the end with His passion, resurrection, and life. Longest Night Blessings, This is the symbol of the covenant that I am drawing up between me and you and every living thing with you, on behalf of every future generation. I have placed my bow in the clouds; and upon seeing it I will remember the enduring covenant between God and every living being of all the earth s creatures. - Genesis 9:12 2

6 Children s Ministry DIRECTOR OF CHILDREN S MINISTRY SOUL FULL SUNDAYS Cindy Vinson, director cindy1@lewismemorial.com Children s Church provides a time for children during the Sunday Worship Services for potty trained toddlers through 2 nd grade children. It is located in the white building next to the Chapel. After the Children s Moment one of our Children s Ministry volunteers leads the children to a time of Bible stories, crafts and singing. 8:30 & 11:00 am Children s Church Building (Children with Communion Cards will be brought back to share Communion with parents on Sunday, March 4.) Sunday School provides an opportunity for children to delve deeper into God s Word in an age appropriate setting, where children and group leaders can love and care for one another. 9:45 am Education Building Nursery - 5th grade And Jesus increased in wisdom and in years, and in divine and human favor. Luke 2:52 Pre K - 4TH Grade Sundays 5:00 pm Chapel 252 Basics is a curriculum designed for Pre-Kindergarten through 4th Grade. What does 252 mean? It s not our street address, nor the number of questions a 2nd grader can ask in 20 minutes. Instead, everything we teach in 252 Basics is based on one of three basic, but powerful truths modeled by Jesus in Luke 2:52 (hence 252) I need to make the wise choice. I can trust God no matter what. I should treat others the way I want to be treated. The curriculum is designed to provoke discovery and invite kids into a new understanding of how to grow in relationship with Jesus Christ. Each week we join Children s Choir and Intergenerational Meal. March Theme: Peace March Memory Verse: So let us do all we can to live in peace. And let us work hard to build up one another. Romans 14:19 NIRV 5th Grade Pastor Palooza 5:00 pm Rm G107 Pastor Palooza: Fifth graders get to chat and have fun with Pastor Beth from 5:00-6:00 pm on Sundays. This is a special time for 5th graders as they transition from Children s Ministry to Youth Ministry. They will join Children s Choir at 6:00 pm. Another adult is needed for this ministry, to fulfill Safe Sanctuaries standards. Children s Choir (K 5th grade) Why join? Singing in a choir has been linked to better grades & test scores, increased confidence, improved social skills, self discipline and much more. Plus it s fun to make a joyful noise to the Lord! We are working on songs for 5 th Sunday Worship in April. - Melissa Tennant, facilitator Sundays 6:00 pm Choir Intergenerational Family Style Meal Sundays 6:30 pm Fellowship Hall After a full day of worship in the morning and Bible studies in the afternoon, it s great to gather around the table to enjoy a family style meal.
