Matt Yoder May 29 Memorial Day (Office Closed) From the Desk of Pastor Matt Yoder When the perishable has been clothed with the imperishable, and the mortal with immortality, then the saying that is written will come true: Death has been swallowed up in victory. 1 Corinthians 15:54 The month of May is always such an interesting time in the church season. On one hand there is a sense of energy and renewal as we come out of the Easter season, but on the other, there is also a nagging temptation for things to get back to normal. We have just experienced a very powerful and very moving Journey to the Cross through the Lenten and Holy Week seasons. We have been with Jesus every step of the way, and hopefully through that series we have discovered a new revelation about the meaning of the cross or Jesus love for us. But as we turn the calendar over, the Stations of the Cross are no longer front and center in our minds. The journey of Jesus to the cross and his death and resurrection are in the rearview mirror. For many of us, our minds may be racing with summer vacation plans and preparing for the end of the school year, and carrying forward the energy of the Easter season is far from us. So how do we resist the temptation and the urge to roll the stone back in front of the tomb and forget about the life-changing good news of the resurrection for another year? It s in the truth and knowledge that we are indeed an Easter people who have the opportunity to share in the resurrection of Christ each and every day. He is risen! is not just a proclamation to be shouted in praise one day of the year; it is worthy of being lifted up all 365 days of the year. This month could I encourage you to do something unorthodox in your faith journey? Take just a moment each day to read through a few verses of the resurrection story of Jesus and remind yourself of the greatest miracle and the greatest testimony of love every known. In doing so, we may be renewed and inspired to live in that resurrection power every day instead of only storing it up for a certain time on the calendar. The month of June will be a month of celebrating the church with Pentecost and our debt-retirement celebration. To prepare us for that time, let us be strengthened this month in the power of Jesus Christ and his resurrection. Let us be emboldened to continue the Easter celebration by living transformed lives in the new life of Christ. Pastor Matt Yoder

2 Linworth Children s Center An Educational Ministry of Linworth United Methodist Church Spring is in the Air at LCC! Children s Ministries News Alisha Artis, Director of Children's Ministries (aartis@linworthumc.org) Club 56: End-of-the-Year Event May 7, 2017, 4:00-7:00 p.m. This event will be at Dave & Busters in Hilliard. Drop off and Pick-up will be at Dave & Busters, not the church. Incoming 5th graders for the next school year are also invited! Bring a friend too! Cost is $20 per person (includes food, drinks, and a game card). RSVP is required for the event by May 2! VBS 2017 Maker Fun Factory, July 10-14! Registration begins May 8! Preschool session is from 9-11:30 a.m. for ages three through five years old (children must be pottytrained). Elementary session is from 1-4:00 p.m. for children who have completed kindergarten through fifth grade. Registration fee is $15 per child until June 12. Registration fee will increase to $30 per child after this date. Early registration is strongly encouraged. We appreciate the hard work, the laughter, the friendships and the enthusiasm. You have made a difference with helping at the Garage Sale! Spring Retreat The Youth Retreat is Friday, May 12 through Sunday, May 14 at Camp Akita. Registration is on the Youth page of the Linworth UMC web site. Remember to invite your friends for the amazing weekend getaway! South Carolina Mission Trip The Youth Mission Trip this summer is to South Carolina. All youth in grades 7-12 are invited to join us for the trip. We will be helping a church with their VBS, working on projects, hanging out at the beach, etc. It s going to be a great trip, and we hope you can join us! Register on the Youth page of the Linworth UMC web site. Congratulations We would like to congratulate all of our graduating seniors! We are so proud of you and all you have accomplished. May God bless you as you are off to new adventures! Congratulations Class of 2017! LCC is getting ready for SUMMER!! We have had an AWESOME school year. It has been wonderful watching all the children grow this year! This summer we have about 85 elementary summer campers coming! We will be busy going on field trips, having special guests, helping the community, playing games, and even some learning :). We are also offering preschool summer camps. Closer Walk The Closer Walk Class meets from 9:15am-10:15am each Sunday morning to discuss topics of relevance in our faith journey. Through June we are studying the book, The Jesus I Never Knew, by Philip Yancey. Join us and you will enjoy our class even if you do not have the book. At the conclusion of this study, we will take the summer off and resume in the fall. Call Ken Galloway at with any questions. IMPACT Group: Claremont Ministry Building relationships one visit at a time. The IMPACT Small Group meets several times a month at Claremont. Searchers Sunday School This Adult Class meets in room 138 of the Fellowship Hall at 10:00am each Sunday. Doug Stahle is the coordinator for this group. Women s Bible Study Please join us as we study Max Lucado's book "You'll Get Through This." No matter where you are in your journey of faith, come be a part of this wonderful fellowship of women as we study God s word. Come join this group on Sunday mornings at 10:15am in room 210. MOPS (Mothers of Preschoolers) This is a time to rejuvenate and reconnect with other moms on the second and fourth Mondays of the month, 9:30-11:30 am at the church. Childcare is provided. Linworth Knotters Knotters will meet May 10 & 24 in the Fellowship Hall. The Knotters are still collecting used blankets, sheets, and mattress pads for use in the on going sleeping-bag project. Bus Trips Pastor Matt Yoder will be ordained as an Elder on Tuesday, June 6 in Lakeside, Ohio. We are renting a 56-seat bus so that everyone can support him. We will leave the church at noon and return at 9 or 9:30pm. There will be a box lunch served in the bus on the way home after a small reception at the Loars home in Lakeside. Cost is $25 per person. Thanks to everyone who helped with the Garage Sale to make it yet another amazing success. Hilltop Ministry Exciting things are happening on the Hilltop! The school produce distributions are moving back outside. On May 10 it will be at West Broad Elementary School (corner of Hague Ave. and Broad Street). Come down and be a part of the festivities as we set up at 2 pm, and distribute until 6 pm. Homework Help for elementaryaged children happens on Tuesdays, from 3;30 to 5:30 pm at 159 S. Eureka Avenue. We're nearing the end of the school year, which means our summer program is gearing up for another series of adventures. The summer is more theme-based and life-skills oriented, and we're looking for programming ideas and for people willing to share a special interest or talent with the neighborhood kids. Summer also means Freedom Schools will be in session. The program, sponsored by the Shalom Zone, goes from June 21 to July 28 and is your opportunity to encourage a child to explore the many wonders of the world of literature. For a few hours a week (or more often if you like), you can help foster an appreciation for reading with an elementary-aged child. Look for sign-up sheets at a table in the Narthex soon. We are also exploring partnerships with various organizations to promote health and other issues that affect the Hilltop, as well as taking advantage of the expertise and passion that LUMC's congregation has to share with the people in the Eureka Avenue neighborhood. If you have a talent for, or love of a particular area, be it gardening, sewing, music, etc., we'd love to have you share it this summer at the House. Look for opportunities to sign up in the Sunday Worship Bulletins. See you on the Hilltop. Two Volunteer Opportunities with Habitat for Humanity The AEP corporate build with Habitat is underway.. They are building a two-bedroom home for the Johnson family and plan to work on Wednesdays and Saturdays. If you have an interest in volunteering with this construction effort, please contact Jim Rosing at jrcnrosing@insight.rr.com The Hilliard Adopt-A-House faith build with Habitat is projected to start in mid-to-late May. They are building a three-bedroom home for the Bryant family and also plan to work on Wednesdays and Saturdays. 5 UMW Women s Ministries Mission Board Meeting Contact: Jane Pierce Next Board Meeting is May 9 at 7pm. UMW Morning Fellowship Circle The next meeting will meet on Tuesday, May 9 at 9:30am in room 210. Sondie Schwotzer will be hostess and will present devotions, Mothers in Action is the program focus. Wendy Bumbico will be our guest speaker from MOPS (Mothers of Pre- Schoolers). All Linworth women and their guests are welcome for fellowship, devotions and sharing. Contact: Lea Elshoff Mission Project Help This month we are collecting toothbrushes, toothpaste, dental floss to help those in need. Toilet paper and diapers are always welcome. These items go to the New Life UMC Clothing Room. Our collection of used eye glasses and pop tabs is continuous! Please place all of these items in the UMW-Club 56 cupboard opposite the elevator, or they may be brought to any Circle or Board meeting. Thank you for your ongoing support. New Stephen Ministers to be Commissioned On Tuesday, May 2 Stephen Ministry trainees, Jean Forbes, Rhonda and Steve Harris, and Karen Kackloudis will celebrate the completion of their training along with all current Stephen Ministers. These dedicated people have participated in 50 hours of training over the past four months and are ready to begin their caring ministry among us at Linworth United Methodist Church. Individuals from St. Patrick s Episcopal Church and Northwest United Methodist Church joined us in the training sessions, and they, as well as their Stephen leaders, will take part in the commissioning. This will be a time for celebration as Tom Cook and Christine Hiester share their musical talents, and Pastor Gene, Pastor Curnell, and Pastor Matt lead us in the rite for commissioning the new Stephen Ministers. We thank God for all our Stephen Ministers and pray that God will bless their ministries Mission Trips to Laos As a part of our ongoing support of the mission in Laos, we will make two mission trips to Laos this year. The Youth will go in July. The Lao Youth are planning a youth conference to coincide with the visiting youth from our church. If you are interested in going on a trip to Laos, there will be a trip going October 1-14, Let Pastor Graham or Joel Rabb know if you are interested. When in our music God is glorified it is as though the whole creation cried, Alleluia! A Note from Music Director, Christine Hiester Though we have two services with differing styles, we are one Body in Christ. On May 7 we will come together to celebrate musically all that God has done and is doing at Linworth in worship. Our two services will be blended, including both traditional and contemporary elements and songs, and our message will be one of Alleluia, which is defined God be praised! Regardless of your preferred style of music in the church, my hope is that we can all worship in a spirit of unity, celebrating all of the varying gifts of LUMC. Looking ahead, summer holds much to look forward to in our community of music and worship. Many of our members will be sharing their musical offerings as special music; there will be a Handbell 101 class for those who read music and are interested in ringing with us, but would like to learn the basic techniques; and we will have three wonderful concerts on the lawn perfect opportunities to invite friends and family.
