1 Order of Worship October 25, 2015 Welcome to Hope Presbyterian Church! The way we show respect is to give it a second look, a look not of the eyes but of the heart To respect something is to understand that there is something there to see, that it is not all surface, that something lies beneath the surface, something that has the power to change the way we think or how we live. Ken Gire I think I like Oswald Chamber s definition most: The use of the Bible term heart is best understood by simply saying me. Me My heart is me. The real me. Your heart is you. The deepest, truest you. John Eldridge Wholehearted living is about engaging in our lives from a place of worthiness. Brene Brown The Oath of Enlistment (for enlistees): I,, do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic; that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same; and that I will obey the orders of the President of the United States and the orders of the officers appointed over me, according to regulations and the Uniform Code of Military Justice. So help me God.

3 On the mount of crucifixion Fountains opened deep and wide Through the floodgates of God's mercy Flowed a vast and gracious tide Grace and love like mighty rivers Poured incessant from above Heav'n's peace and perfect justice Kissed a guilty world in love No love is higher no love is wider No love is deeper no love is truer No love is higher no love is wider No love is like Your love O Lord Matt Redman Robert Lowry William Rees 2004 Thankyou Music Call to Confession Prayer of Confession Lord, You showed us true humility by becoming one of us, yet too often we practice pride. You cried alongside your friends and for the city of Jerusalem, yet too often we rush past the pain of others and are careless about our cities. You loved those who were weak, despised, or cast out, yet too often we love those who are strong, respected, or popular. You freely forgave and healed, yet too often we hold grudges and cause pain. You lived a perfectly holy life, yet too often we do not yearn for righteousness. You prayed that we who believe in you should be united with each other and you, yet too often we focus on the differences that separate us from other believers. You were mocked, whipped, and even killed for us, yet too often we deny you. You call us to be the salt of the earth and the light of the world, yet too often we blend into or hide from our culture. Forgive us, Lord, so that we will shine with your glory. Amen. Silent Confession Assurance of Forgiveness I will sprinkle clean water upon you, and you shall be clean from all your sin, and from all your idols I will cleanse you. A new heart I will give you, and a new spirit I will put within you; and I will remove from your body the heart of stone and give you a heart of flesh. Ezekiel 36:25-26, NRSV Lord, I Need You Lord I come I confess Bowing here I find my rest Without You I fall apart You're the one that guides my heart Lord, I need You, oh I need You Ev'ry hour I need You My one defense my righteousness Oh God how I need You Where sin runs deep Your grace is more Where grace is found is where You are And where You are Lord I am free Holiness is Christ in me Where You are Lord, I am free Holiness is Christ in me So teach my song to rise to You When temptation comes my way And when I cannot stand I'll fall on You Jesus, You're my hope and stay And when I cannot stand I'll fall on You Jesus, You're my hope and stay C Nockels D Carson J Reeves K Stanfill M Maher 2011 sixsteps Music The Heidelberg Catechism (1563) What is your only comfort in life and in death? Congregation: That I belong body and soul, in life and in death not to myself but to my faithful Savior, Jesus Christ, who at the cost of his own blood has fully paid for all my sins and has completely freed me from the dominion of the devil; that he protects me so well that without the will of my Father in heaven not a hair can fall from my head; indeed, that everything must fit his purpose for my salvation. Therefore, by his Holy Spirit, he also assures me of eternal life, and makes me wholeheartedly willing and ready from now on to live for him. *Children ages 3 through 5 years are dismissed to attend their worship class. K-5 th graders will remain in worship* Welcome and Prayers of the People Delane Clark Offering and Doxology Passing of the Peace of Christ Life Together Ned Erickson
4 Message Ned Erickson A Matter of the Heart The Pharisees and some of the teachers of the law who had come from Jerusalem gathered around Jesus 2 and saw some of his disciples eating food with hands that were defiled, that is, unwashed. 3 The Pharisees and all the Jews do not eat unless they give their hands a ceremonial washing, holding to the tradition of the elders. 4 When they come from the marketplace they do not eat unless they wash. And they observe many other traditions, such as the washing of cups, pitchers and kettles. 5 So the Pharisees and teachers of the law asked Jesus, Why don t your disciples live according to the tradition of the elders instead of eating their food with defiled hands? 6 He replied, Isaiah was right when he prophesied about you hypocrites; as it is written: These people honor me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me. 7 They worship me in vain; their teachings are merely human rules. 8 You have let go of the commands of God and are holding on to human traditions. 9 And he continued, You have a fine way of setting aside the commands of God in order to observe your own traditions! 10 For Moses said, Honor your father and mother, and, Anyone who curses their father or mother is to be put to death. 11 But you say that if anyone declares that what might have been used to help their father or mother is Corban (that is, devoted to God) 12 then you no longer let them do anything for their father or mother. 13 Thus you nullify the word of God by your tradition that you have handed down. And you do many things like that. 14 Again Jesus called the crowd to him and said, Listen to me, everyone, and understand this. 15 Nothing outside a person can defile them by going into them. Rather, it is what comes out of a person that defiles them After he had left the crowd and entered the house, his disciples asked him about this parable. 18 Are you so dull? he asked. Don t you see that nothing that enters a person from the outside can defile them? 19 For it doesn t go into their heart but into their stomach, and then out of the body. (In saying this, Jesus declared all foods clean.) 20 He went on: What comes out of a person is what defiles them. 21 For it is from within, out of a person s heart, that evil thoughts come sexual immorality, theft, murder, 22 adultery, greed, malice, deceit, lewdness, envy, slander, arrogance and folly. 23 All these evils come from inside and defile a person. Mark 7:1-23, NIV Gathering at the Lord s Table *Children return to join their families* The Lord be with you. And also with you. Lift up your hearts. We lift them up to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give Him thanks and praise. Therefore let us proclaim the mystery of the faith. Christ has died, Christ is risen, Christ will come again. Come As You Are Come out of sadness from wherever you've been Come broken-hearted let rescue begin Come find your mercy O sinner come kneel Lay down your burdens lay down your shame All who are broken lift up your face O wanderer come home You're not too far So lay down your hurt lay down your heart There's hope for the hopeless And all those who've strayed Come sit at the table come taste the grace There's rest for the weary Rest that endures Earth has no sorrow that Heaven can't cure Fall in His arms There's joy for the morning O sinner be still Ben Glover David Crowder Matt Maher t One Songs Jude Doxology Now to Him who is able to keep you, Who is able to keep you from stumbling And to make you stand in the presence Of His glory, blameless, with great joy To the only God our Savior Through Jesus Christ, our Lord Be all glory, majesty, dominion, and power Before all time and now and forever Amen and amen, amen and amen Amen and amen, amen and amen and amen. Composer Unknown Benediction The Lord bless you and keep you; the Lord make his face to shine upon you and be gracious to you; the Lord turn his face toward you and give you peace. Numbers 6:24-26, NIV

The Sabbath is not a fast, but a feast, a day for rejoicing in the works of a gracious God, and joy must be its temper throughout. Joy suits no person so much as a saint, and it becomes no season as well
