1 Order of Worship November 29, 2015 Welcome to Hope Presbyterian Church! Sabbath is the stranger you ve always known. It s the place of homecoming you ve rarely or never visited, but which you ve been missing forever. You recognize it the moment you set eyes on it. It s the gift that surprises you, not by its novelty, but by its familiarity. It s the song you never sang but, hearing it now, know inside out, its words and melody, its harmonies, its rhythm, the way the tune quickens just before the chorus bursts. Its been asleep in you all this time, waiting for the right kiss to wake it. Life is meant to be much different fuller, richer, deeper, slower from what it is. The Rest of God, Mark Buchanan But in fact the real difficulty, because the supreme mystery with which the gospel confronts us, does not lie here at all. It lies, not in the Good Friday message of atonement, nor in the Easter message of resurrection, but in the Christmas message of incarnation. The really staggering Christian claim is that Jesus of Nazareth was God made man the second person of the Godhead became the second man (I Corinthians 15:47), determining human destiny, the second representative head of the race, and that He took humanity without loss of deity, so that Jesus of Nazareth was as truly and fully divine as He was human. Here are two mysteries for the price of one the plurality of persons within the unity of God, and the union of Godhead and manhood in the person of Jesus. It is here, in the thing that happened at the first Christmas, that the profoundest and most unfathomable depths of the Christian revelation lie. The Word was made flesh (John 1:14);God became man; the divine Son became a Jew, the Almighty appeared on earth as a helpless human baby, unable to do more than lie and stare and wriggle and make noises, needing to be fed and changed and taught to talk like any other child. And there was no illusion or deception in this; the babyhood of the Son of God was a reality. The more you think about it, the more staggering it gets. 3 Call to Confession Prayer of Confession O Promised Christ, our lives are filled with sin. We overlook our neighbor s needs and do not love you above all else. Our rescue depends on your coming. We are a world at war. Our peace depends on your coming. We are a guilty people. Our pardon depends on your coming. We are full of good intentions but weak at keeping promises; our only hope of doing your will is that you should come and empower us to do it. Lord Christ, Word made flesh, our world waits for your rescue, for your peace, for your pardon, for your power, and for your grace. Even so: come, Lord Jesus. Amen. 6 ANNOUNCEMENTS New Deacons. The Elders are requesting nominations for Deacons. Please pray for new men to be raised up to serve. Review the qualifications for a Deacon in 1 Timothy 3: Ask for the man's permission before submitting his name. Nominations should be received by December 31. Our next Healing Service will be held in the worship center on Wednesday, December 9th from 7:30-8:30pm. Join the Christmas Choir! One rehearsal on December 17th, 7:00pm & we sing December 20th!
