The Easter Collection is a special collection. It enables the parish to address extraordinary expenses and capital projects. Please be as generous as your means permit. The second collection on Easter is the ordinary Sunday collection. Thank you! SACRAMENT OF CONFIRMATION Bishop Timothy Senior will administer the Sacrament of Confirmation at Saint Colman at the parish Mass: April 22, 12:00 P.M. Mass Please keep our candidates and their families in your prayers. IT IS GREAT TO SEE YOU! Easter is a time when many Catholics come to Mass for a semi-annual visit. Christmas is often the other time. We welcome you to Saint Colman. This is a great opportunity to make a resolution to join us more frequently. Good and bad habits all begin the same way by doing something one time. People who begin a diet or exercise plan begin by doing something once. Starting or stopping smoking begins by doing it one time. By participating in Easter Sunday Mass, you have already done something once. See you next Sunday! EASTER GREETING The Priests and Deacon join in wishing you and your families Happy Easter! May the joy of Easter fill your hearts and homes with joy throughout the year. God bless you. PARISH RELIGIOUS EDUCATION PROGRAM (P.R.E.P.) No Classes today. Classes resume April 8. THANK YOU As you can imagine, there is a great deal of effort that goes into the Liturgies of the Easter Triduum (Holy Thursday, Good Friday, Easter Sunday). We are grateful for all who assisted in preparation or participation of these liturgies. In particular, we appreciate the contributions of our music director, organists, choir, cantors, readers, altar servers, extraordinary ministers of Holy Communion, Greeters/Ushers. We also thank those who cleaned our Church and decorated it so beautifully for the Easter Season.

3 THE EASTER SEASON The Feast of Easter involves three days that are referred to as the Easter Triduum. The Feast of Easter begins on Holy Thursday with the celebration of the Lord s Last Supper. It continues on Good Friday when we commemorate the Passion and Death of Jesus in a supreme act of love and mercy. The Feast of Easter comes to a climax on Easter Sunday when we celebrate the Resurrection of Jesus from the dead. Easter is an event that has infinite and eternal implications. However, we are limited and finite. The Triduum divides the one Easter event into three parts so that we can more adequately celebrate this awesome event. RICE BOWL Please return your donation to Operation Rice Bowl as soon as possible. Please place your donation in the collection basket in an envelope and mark it Rice Bowl. 4 EASTER VICTORY The Resurrection of Jesus is a victory over sin and death. His rising from the dead opens the gates of heaven to us. He offers eternal life when our lives on earth end. His rising from the dead also impacts our lives now. Throughout history, many people have accomplished feats that some considered impossible. The electric light bulb, telephone, smallpox vaccine, space travel and computers are just a few. No one, not Moses nor Muhammad, claimed to have the power to defeat death. If Jesus can conquer death, he can overcome any difficulty or obstacle that we face in daily life. He asks only that we have faith in Him and his Father who sent him. Since Easter is such a transformational event, it cannot be fully appreciated even with the Triduum. The Octave of Easter includes the eight days that follow Easter Sunday and concludes on Divine Mercy Sunday (the Sunday after Easter). The Church treats these eight days as if they were Easter Sunday. Genesis reveals that God created the world in seven days. Through the death and resurrection of Jesus, God is recreating our humanity and the world. The eighth day signifies this new creation. In order to permit us to savor the joy of Easter, the joy of being freed from sin and offered eternal life, the Church celebrates an Easter Season. The Easter Season extends for fifty days. It culminates on Pentecost Sunday. During these fifty days, the readings and prayers of each daily and Sunday Mass offer new and exciting glimpses into the meaning of Easter. The Catechism reminds us, The resurrection of Jesus is the crowning truth of our faith. The heart of our very identity as Christians is this belief that God has radically changed the universe in the birth, life, passion, death, and resurrection of Jesus. SPIRITUAL BOUQUET FOR CONFIRMATION, APRIL 22 Our parish is currently preparing a Spiritual Bouquet to be presented to Bishop Timothy Senior when he celebrates Confirmation here on April 22 at our 12:00 P.M. Please contact us as soon as possible, so we can include your prayers in the Spiritual Bouquet. FIRST HOLY COMMUNION Children of our parish will receive their First Holy Communion at the parish Mass on May 6, 12:00 P.M. Please keep them and their families in your prayers. 5 SAINTS OF GOD COME TO OUR AID SAINT ISIDORE OF SEVILLE Feast Day: April 4 The 76 years of Isidore s life ( A.D.) were a time of conflict for the Church in Spain. The Visigoths who were Arians had invaded Spain and set up their own capital, so Spain was split into two: one people (Roman Catholics) struggled with the other (Arian Goths). Isidore reunited Spain, making it a center of culture and learning. As the Bishop of Seville, Isidore was called The Schoolmaster of the Middle Ages, because the encyclopedia he wrote was used as a textbook for nine centuries. He ordered seminaries built in every diocese, wrote a Rule for religious orders, and founded schools that taught every branch of learning. Isidore also wrote numerous books, including a dictionary, an encyclopedia, a history of the Goths and a history of the world beginning with creation. He has been suggested as the patron of the Internet. THE CHURCH TEACHES God has created us with wisdom and love and has directed us to union with God in heaven. This ordering of humanity to a final union with God is inscribed in the human heart (Rom 2:5). God has infused in each person the light of understanding whereby we understand what must be done and what must be avoided. God gave this light and this law to humanity at creation. He also did so in the history of Israel, particularly in the Decalogue (ten commandments) of Sinai, whereby he brought into existence the people of the Covenant (Ex 24) and called them to be his "own possession among all peoples", "a holy nation" (Ex 19:5-6), which would radiate his holiness to all peoples (Wis 18:4; Ez 20:41). The gift of the Decalogue was a promise and sign of the New Covenant, in which the law would be written in a new and definitive way upon the human heart (Jer 31:31-34), replacing the law of sin which had disfigured that heart (Jer 17:1). In those days, "a new heart" would be given, for in it would dwell "a new spirit", the Spirit of God (Ez 36:24-28). Jesus tells us that if we wish to enter into life, keep the commandments (Mt 19:17). In this way, a close connection is made between eternal life and obedience to God's commandments. God's commandments show human beings the path to life. From the very lips of Jesus, the new Moses, humanity is once again given the commandments of the Decalogue. Jesus himself definitively confirms them and proposes them to us as the way and condition of salvation. The commandments are linked to a promise. In the Old Covenant the object of the promise was the possession of a land where the people would be able to live in freedom and in accordance with righteousness (Dt 6:20-25). In the New Covenant the object of the promise is the Kingdom of Heaven. Jesus declares this at the beginning of the "Sermon on the Mount" a sermon which contains the fullest and most complete formulation of the New Law (Mt 5-7). This Kingdom is referred to as "eternal life", which is a participation in the very life of God. It is attained in its perfection only after death. However, through faith it is even now a light of truth, a source of meaning for life. Indeed, Jesus says to his disciples: "Everyone who has left houses or brothers or sisters or father or mother or children or lands, for my name's sake, will receive a hundredfold and inherit eternal life" (Mt 19:29). (Saint Pope John Paul II The Splendor of Truth, 12)

6 LOOK AHEAD: APRIL 8 Below you will find the Scripture Readings for Mass next Sunday. They provide material for spiritual reading and reflection during the week, to help you to prepare for Mass next weekend. First Reading Acts 4: The community of believers was of one heart and mind, and no one claimed that any of his possessions was his own, but they had everything in common. With great power the apostles bore witness to the resurrection of the Lord Jesus, and great favor was accorded them all. There was no needy person among them, for those who owned property or houses would sell them, bring the proceeds of the sale, and put them at the feet of the apostles, and they were distributed to each according to need. Second Reading 1 John 5: 1-6 Beloved: Everyone who believes that Jesus is the Christ is begotten by God, and everyone who loves the Father loves also the one begotten by him. In this way we know that we love the children of God when we love God and obey his commandments. For the love of God is this, that we keep his commandments. And his commandments are not burdensome, for whoever is begotten by God conquers the world. And the victory that conquers the world is our faith. Who indeed is the victor over the world but the one who believes that Jesus is the Son of God? This is the one who came through water and blood, Jesus Christ, not by water alone, but by water and blood. The Spirit is the one that testifies, and the Spirit is truth. Gospel John 20: On the evening of that first day of the week, when the doors were locked, where the disciples were, for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood in their midst and said to them, "Peace be with you." When he had said this, he showed them his hands and his side. The disciples rejoiced when they saw the Lord. Jesus said to them again, "Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, so I send you." And when he had said this, he breathed on them and said to them, "Receive the Holy Spirit. Whose sins you forgive are forgiven them, and whose sins you retain are retained." Thomas, called Didymus, one of the Twelve, was not with them when Jesus came. So the other disciples said to him, "We have seen the Lord." But he said to them, "Unless I see the mark of the nails in his hands and put my finger into the nail marks and put my hand into his side, I will not believe." Now a week later his disciples were again inside and Thomas was with them. Jesus came, although the doors were locked, and stood in their midst and said, "Peace be with you." Then he said to Thomas, "Put your finger here and see my hands, and bring your hand and put it into my side, and do not be unbelieving, but believe." Thomas answered and said to him, "My Lord and my God!" Jesus said to him, "Have you come to believe because you not seen and have believed." Now Jesus did many other signs in the presence of his disciples that are not written in this book. But these are written that you may come to believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that through this belief you may have life in his name.
