Summer School 4 16 July 2016 ABUNDANT LIFE EXPLORING A CHRISTIAN VISION FOR LIVING

Abundant Life The life of discipleship, taught Jesus, is a life of abundance, life in all its fullness but an abundance that goes far deeper than the Promised Land of consumerism. In our Summer School of 2016 we are exploring what that good life might look like, and how individuals, churches and the communities we serve might flourish as a true expression of God s abounding love for the world. Please join us! Abundant Life 2016 offers 15 sessions resourcing individuals and churches over a focussed two-week period, with a more itinerant feel than in previous years. There are a number of FREE sessions hosted by Diocesan Teams linked to the recent survey exploring our existing diocesan mission strategy, Common Purpose. A range of guest contributors will offer a Christian vision of abundant life in the everyday activities of work and rest, art and play, prayer and friendship, as well as in the bigger picture of culture, environment and politics. Sessions generally cost 12 to individuals and online booking via Eventbrite.com is available. A discretionary church group rate is also available on request. The two weeks culminate in a FREE Abundant Life Festival morning with Pete Grieg, one of the founding champions of the 24/7 prayer movement. Revd Matt Prior is the Diocesan Adult Discipleship and Development Adviser, within the Discipleship, Vocation and Ministry Team. Tel: MOOR PARK COLLEGE TRUST LIMITED Summer School 2016 has been organised by the Diocese of Guildford Financial Support Moor Park College Trust Jesus said: I came that they may have life, and have it abundantly (John 10.10) 5 2

Graham Osborne and Sarah Hutton Abundant Life: Growing as Disciples Monday 4 July St Mary s Church Guildford, Surrey GU1 7YP Course code: 01/16 Fee: FREE (suggested 5 donation on the day) but booking essential. There is no parking on site at St Mary s. We recommend using either the Millbrook or Upper High Street car park. The first strand of Common Purpose concerns growing in spiritual maturity. But what might that look like for you? If we are honest, we all struggle in our discipleship at points, living less well than we would like to. In this interactive and hands-on session, we will look at how we might pray and work out our calling from a secure identity in Christ, working with the grain of our personality rather than against it. We will be exploring spiritual maturity through the lens of the Myers Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI). If you tell us when you book that you do not know, or are unsure of, your MBTI type, we will point you to an instrument that will tell you. s Revd. Graham Osborne is currently Rector of Leatherhead and Mickleham. He is an active Spiritual Director and Supervisor and consults in personality type, both to individuals and to teams. His MPhil thesis applies the Myers Briggs Type Indicator to the exercise of Christian ministry. Revd. Sarah Hutton is the Spiritual Growth Facilitator within the Discipleship, Vocation and Ministry Team. Summer School is open to all If you haven t been before, come and be inspired. 4 Ben Niblett and Jean Leston The Good Life: Global and Personal Tuesday 5 July 9.30am pm The Auditorium Living Planet Centre World Worldlife Foundation-UK Rufford House Brewery Road Woking, Surrey GU21 4LL Course code: 02/16 Fee: 12 for individuals We recommend using the Brewery Road car park underneath the venue or other town centre car parks opposite. The last 25 years have seen more people around the world escaping from poverty than ever before in human history. But that s come at a great cost to the environment, and it can t continue if everyone on earth consumed as much as the average person in Britain, we d need two and a half planets to support it. Can we find new ways to develop and take care of creation as we do? In our personal lives, consumerism often feels like a distraction at best and a false god at worst, something that takes our identity away from being followers of Jesus. Can we find ways to live well and generously in a consumer society? s Ben Niblett is a senior campaigner at Tearfund. He s won campaigns on corruption, climate change, and water and sanitation, and lost one on trade rules. He s working on building a movement of Christians thinking differently, living simply, and speaking out. Jean Leston is a Board member of Operation Noah, the Christian climate change charity. Previously Jean worked for WWF. She is currently encouraging her church, St Stephen s, Shottermill, to become an Eco-Church. Ben Niblett Jean Leston Visit to book online via the Eventbrite link 5 4

Clive Potter, John Marrow and Matt Prior Sporting Life: a Vision for Sports Ministry Tuesday 5 July Emmanuel Church 1 Shepherds Lane Stoughton GU2 9SJ Course code: 03/16 Fee: 12 What has sport got to do with God? Not much, you might think. But play is a gift of God and playing or watching sport is one of our favourite pastimes in the UK, with professional sport now the arena of big business. How can we then take sport seriously, but not too seriously? And how can the local church start up a sports ministry, in partnership with a school or a local sports club? We can reach out to large groups of children, young people and their families when we have a vision beyond our walls. Come and take to the field! s Revd. Clive Potter has been involved in sports ministry for 30 years. He is the Vicar of St. John s, Milford and the Diocesan Adviser on Sports Ministry, as well as Chaplain to the Surrey Football Association. Capt. John Marrow is Evangelist for Kids Alive 325 and the Wheels Project possibly the longest title ever given in the Church Army! He has worked extensively in the sport and leisure industry. 55

Tim Cross and Steve Cox God s not Dead! : Confident Christian Witness in Public Life Wednesday 6 July St Paul s Church Howell Hill Northey Avenue SM2 7HS Course code: 04/16 Fee: FREE (suggested 5 donation on the day) but booking essential. The second strand of Common Purpose is about numerical growth, but the recent survey has shown that a lack of confidence in our message of Good News is the biggest barrier we face as a diocese. Tim will talk about witnessing to the truth of the Gospel through serving in the British Army on operations from N Ireland and Cyprus to the Balkans (three times) and Iraq (twice) places where, amongst other things, he discovered that sin and evil weren t just interesting theological issues but the harsh realities of a brutal world. s Major General (Retired) Tim Cross CBE is a diocesan LLM at St Paul s, Camberley. He chairs the Board of Theos, tutors at the Leadership Trust, advises a number of UK/ International Companies and is a visiting Professor at three Universities. Preb. Steve Cox is the Local Mission Adviser within the Parish Development and Evangelism Team. Major General (Retired) Tim Cross CBE Summer School is open to all If you haven t been before, come and be inspired. Visit to book online via the Eventbrite link 5 6

The Quiet Centre is a short walk away (in grid E7 on the campus map found on the University website). Sleep is something that we all do. It can be studied across many disciplines, as work at the University of Surrey shows. There is also huge popular interest in sleep and its relationship to health and wellbeing. What does faith and belief say about sleep? In this session Andrew Bishop will share some of his writing and thinking about sleep, focusing on its place in Christian theology and practice. The Canon Dr Andrew Bishop is Anglican Chaplain to the University of Surrey and a Canon of Guildford Cathedral. Canon Dr Andrew Bishop Suzette Jones Here s the Church Disability and Welcome Thursday 7 July Education Centre Guildford Cathedral Stag Hill Guildford GU2 7UP Course code: 06/16 Fee: FREE (suggested 5 donation on the day) but booking essential. The third strand of Common Purpose is about community engagement. Suzette Jones writes on behalf of the Communities Engagement Team: Here s the Church Here s the Steeple Look inside Here s the - Disability friendly, accessible, open to all, welcoming People? In this Paralympic year, how welcoming are we really to people living with disability? Are our buildings accessible? Is our attitude warm and open? Let s be inspired, let s look at the PossAbilities, not the disability. A frank and practical workshop to engage hearts and minds. Suzette Jones is the Open to All Health and Wellbeing Adviser in the Communities Engagement Team. 75

Stefan McNally Imagine Church: a Practical Vision for Whole-life Discipleship Monday 11 July St Mary s Church Hall Church Road Byfleet, Surrey KT14 7NF Course code: 09/16 Fee: 12 for individuals Church group rate: To arrange, call Matt Prior on How can we be equipped to take seriously Christ s call to follow Him in the whole of life? 98% of Christians are not in paid church work, and yet too often we limit their discipleship to their leisure-time volunteering in the activities of the Church when gathered. How can we embrace the significance of God s direct involvement with the Church scattered at the Frontline of life: our day-to-day lives at home, at work, and at rest? Come and be inspired! Stefan McNally is Imagine Programme Director at the London Institute of Contemporary Christianity (LICC). LICC s pioneering Imagine Church resources and course materials will be available for purchase on the night. Mark Rudall Paint Your Heart: a Guided Art Retreat Tuesday 12 July 9.30am 12.30pm The Parish Centre 222 Epsom Road Merrow, Guildford GU4 7AA Course code: 10/16 Fee: 12 (including art materials) Limited to 25 people Paint Your Heart is a guided opportunity to find out how we might truly be reading passages of Scripture. You don t have to be an artist: we re not expecting Rembrandt, merely time for the Holy Spirit to speak in a different way. Everything is provided including pencils and charcoal, watercolour, acrylics and as much or as little paper as your heart needs. Revd. Mark Rudall is a former Communications Director in the Diocese of Guildford. Visit to book online via the Eventbrite link 95

Steve Summers Abundant Life: Friendship and Eudaimonia Tuesday 12 July Education Centre Guildford Cathedral Stag Hill Guildford GU2 7UP Course code: 11/16 Fee: 12 John s Gospel provides a description of Jesus disciples as the Friends of Christ. What might be contained within this description? It may have had a different understanding of friendship from our contemporary culture: it was aligned with the Classical world s eudaimonia living the best possible life. Developing his chapter Friends and Friendship in the Oxford Handbook of Theology Sexuality and Gender (2014), Steve will explore abundant life in human relationship. Revd. Dr Steve Summers is the Principal of the Diocesan Local Ministry Programme. His own research is in the field of a theology of friendship. Andy Wheeler Life in Abundance? Listening and Living with the World Church Wednesday 13 July 10am 12.30pm The Parish Centre 222 Epsom Road Merrow, Guildford GU4 7AA Course code: 12/16 Fee: 12 In the past 100 years a revolution has taken place in the Christian Church. The ground has shifted under our feet and we are now at the margins, not the centre, of the action. An exciting time to listen, to learn and to live the Christian life in new ways. This session will change the way you see the world! Revd. Andy Wheeler is a minister at St Saviour s Church, Guildford, and World Mission Advisor for the Diocese. Andy and his wife served with the Church Mission Society in South Sudan, Egypt and Kenya. Revd. Andy Wheeler 5 10

Mike Ovey Why We Can t Live Without the Trinity Wednesday 13 July St Andrew s Frimley Green GU16 6HY Course code: 13/16 Fee: 12 for individuals Church group rate: To arrange, call Matt Prior on The ads tell us that we re all special. But how can that be true for each of us? And why does it feel so much that the world around us does not think we re special? When we look at the Trinity we start to see why Christian faith has so much to offer a culture that seeks answers to these questions about what it means to be human. Revd. Dr Mike Ovey is the Principal of Oak Hill Theological College, where he teaches Doctrine, Apologetics and Liturgy. Prior to ordination, he worked as a civil service lawyer drafting legislation. Suzette Jones Recovering Christian Meditation Thursday 14 July 10am 12.30pm The Parish Centre 222 Epsom Road Merrow, Guildford GU4 7AA Course code: 14/16 Fee: 12 Meditation is about paying attention. The Buddhists call it mindfulness. Christian tradition speaks about it as living in the present moment, or practising the presence of God (Laurence Freeman, OSB). How might we recover the lost Christian tradition of practicing the presence of God, so desperately needed in our stressed-out world? Come prepare to learn, to explore and to practice! Suzette Jones is the Open to All Health and Wellbeing Adviser in the Communities Engagement Team. Visit to book online via the Eventbrite link 115

Dominic Grieve MP Where is Britain Headed? Thursday 14 July The Centenary Rooms St Thomas on the Bourne Frensham Road Farnham GU9 8HA Course code: 15/16 Fee: 12 for individuals Church group rate: To arrange, call Matt Prior on The referendum on a British exit from the European Union takes place on 23rd June. The so-called Brexit and a withdrawal from the European Convention on Human Rights have long been debated in our public life. Whatever the outcome this June, a Christian vision of Britain s national wellbeing and place within the community of nations has perhaps never been more important. This is a timely opportunity to engage with a leading politician, expert in human rights legislation and specialist in international affairs, as we chart a way ahead for Britain. Rt. Hon. Dominic Grieve QC MP is the former Attorney General. He has been a member of the General Synod of the Church of England and is currently the Member of Parliament for Beaconsfield. The evening will close with an opportunity for questions. Rt. Hon. Dominic Grieve QC MP Summer School is open to all If you haven t been before, come and be inspired.
