This has become a pebble in our shoe reminding us with every step that something must be done to address this problem. The Pray for Me Campaign began to emerge as biblical truth was combined with developing research, all in agreement that the role of adult believers is indispensable in passing on a sustainable faith to the next generation. 4 Pastor Bob s Renewal Leave The Staff-Parish Relations Committee is pleased to announce that Tri-Lakes United Methodist Church has received a $50,000 grant from the Lily Foundation Clergy Renewal Program to fund a 15-week renewal leave for Pastor Bob Kaylor in Here are some answers to Frequently Asked Questions about the pastor s renewal leave and the grant: 1. How did this renewal leave come about? Planning for the renewal period began in early 2016 as Pastor Kaylor met with the SPRC to discuss the potential of a sabbatical. Having never had a sabbatical in 26 years of full-time ministry and reaching the seventh year of his current appointment, both the pastor and the committee felt like this was a good time to submit a grant proposal from the National Clergy Renewal Program, sponsored by the Eli Lily Foundation, specifically focused on preparing for a long-term future together. The SPRC unanimously endorsed the drafting of the grant proposal, and a subcommittee was formed in the fall of 2016 to focus specifically on planning the renewal period. The subcommittee worked with Pastor Kaylor to draft the plan and, concurrently, shared the idea of a renewal period with their various constituencies in the church. They reported nothing but enthusiastic support for Pastor Kaylor s renewal leave. A draft of the grant proposal was submitted to the Church Council, which represents all the various groups and committees in the church, on March 7, The Church Council unanimously endorsed the proposal at that meeting. The proposal was submitted to the Lily Foundation in April through Christian Theological Seminary in Indianapolis. On August 14, 2017, we were informed that the grant was approved by the Lily Foundation to fund Pastor Kaylor s renewal leave. Our proposal was one of only a few that were chosen out of hundreds that were submitted in a very competitive selection process. 2. When will the pastor s renewal leave begin and end? The renewal leave begins on May 7, 2018 and ends on August 28, Is there a theme or purpose for the pastor s renewal leave? A Time of Transition is the theme of the renewal program. The leave period will enable both the pastor and congregation to reflect upon three different transitions they are making together: 1) the transition to a longterm pastorate after seven years together; 2) the transitions both pastor and people are making into new seasons of family and personal life; and 3) the transition to a long-term rhythm of abiding and fruitfulness as a sustainable marker of congregational health. The renewal period is an opportunity for both the pastor and congregation to spend time apart to study, rest, reflect, and prepare for the next season of our shared life and ministry. 4. Who will fill in for Pastor Kaylor while he is on renewal leave? We are pleased to have Jason Baxter as our interim pastor while Pastor Kaylor is away. Jason was commissioned at the last annual conference and has the credentials and experience to effectively preach and lead Sunday worship as well as provide pastoral care and leadership as needed. Jason will serve part-time with us and part-time with his regular employer, The Navigators. 5. What will Pastor Kaylor be doing during his renewal leave? Pastor Bob will spend time learning more about transitions. He will have some time to celebrate Hannah s graduation from Calvin College, reconnect with Jennifer as they have become empty nesters, do some hiking, and spend some time in focused prayer, reflection, and research on long-term pastorates. Part of the leave will be spent in Scotland, where Pastor Bob and Jennifer will hike the West Highland Way and spend a week in a prayer retreat on the Isle of Iona. During their travel they will have the opportunity to interview others going through life transitions and learn from people from around the world. 4

5 After a week exploring London and Normandy with his son Rob, Pastor Bob will spend two weeks at the Oxford Summer of School of Theology before returning home in mid-august. He will also have some time for spiritual direction during the leave period and plans to return refreshed and ready for the next season of our ministry together. 6. What will the congregation be doing during the renewal period? The congregation will focus on life transitions as well, with a sermon series and special guest speakers who will focus on the various transitions we make in different seasons of life and how to manage them. It will also be a time for the church to participate in its own season of Sabbath and we will participate in activities and opportunities that will enable our church family to grow spiritually and have a time of rest from the usual frenetic pace of activity. Specific details about activities for the congregation during the renewal period will be forthcoming as it draws closer. 7. What benefits will the pastor and congregation receive from the renewal period? We envision five benefits for the pastor: 1) Renewed energy for ministry and new personal spiritual rhythms designed for the long-term pastorate; 2) a strengthened marriage partnership for Jennifer and Bob for the next season of life together; 3) implementing learning on best practices and leadership traits for the long-term pastorate; 4) learning about life transitions in order to be more effective in helping those in the congregation to manage them well, and 5) an opportunity for theological reflection in preparation for preaching and teaching. And we see five benefits for the congregation: 1) reflection on abiding and fruitfulness during a period of rest from regular programmatic activities; 2) an intentional focus on life transitions, with an emphasis on helping people to manage them through sermons and small group interaction; 3) an invitation to engage in a transitional journey of their own as people follow my renewal journey through activities like matching the pastor s walking mileage, taking a special weekend with a spouse, or engaging in a new personal spiritual discipline; 4) a chance for the congregation to hear a different pastoral voice for a season, who will preach a series on life transitions, and 5) the return of a renewed pastor with a long-term outlook and new energy for preaching and teaching. 8. Is there any additional cost to the congregation for this renewal leave? No. The $50,000 grant includes $35,000 for Pastor Kaylor s renewal activities and travel expenses. TLUMC will continue to pay Pastor Kaylor s regular salary during the renewal period. The additional $15,000 from the grant will fund our interim pastor and guest speakers. The grant will be held in a restricted fund and all expenses will be receipted and accounted for with both TLUMC and the Lily Foundation. 9. What about weddings, funerals, hospitalizations, and other pastoral care needs while Pastor Bob is away? All pastoral care matters will be handled by Jason Baxter with the support of the church staff and lay leadership. Pastor Kaylor will not be available to the congregation during the renewal period. 10. Will Pastor Bob give us reports on his progress during the renewal period? Part of the plan is for Pastor Bob to provide periodic blog posts during the renewal period as a way for him to communicate what he is experiencing and learning. 11. Does this renewal leave presage a move by Pastor Bob away from TLUMC? No. The renewal period is designed to prepare Pastor Bob and TLUMC for more years of fruitful ministry together. The grant itself requires that the pastor stay in place at least one year after the renewal period and Pastor Kaylor plans to stay longer than that. We cannot guaranteed what the conference and denomination will do (and Pastor Kaylor is subject to the itinerant system for UM clergy), but we are planning with the long term in mind. 5

10 Current Sermon Series Lord, teach us to pray, asked Jesus disciples. Prayer is something we know we ought to do more, but we often struggle with how to pray on a consistent basis. But maybe the real reason we struggle with how to pray is that we often fail to understand WHY God wants us to pray! In this series, Pastor Bob Kaylor will take us to the school of prayer from a biblical and theological perspective, helping us to see how prayer is essential to the life of a Christian disciple. In the end, prayer is really all about the gospel and asking God to do what God has already promised. We ll take a look at some of the biblical models of prayer, discuss how prayer changes us, and consider how prayer puts us in line with the work of God s kingdom. Upcoming Sermon Series OK, we know about economics, but what is oikonomics? Actually, it s a combination of the ancient Greek word oikos or family and economics, which has to do with how we invest, exchange, and grow the various kinds of capital we possess. Jesus set up a new oikos when he called his disciples to follow him and then proceeded to teach them to invest in what really matters. In fact, life really boils down to five types of capital in which we invest: spiritual, relational, physical, intellectual, and financial. How we prioritize and organize that investment has a lot to do with how we will live our lives as disciples of Jesus or a family on mission. Join us on October 1 as we begin this exciting new series in which Pastor Bob Kaylor will invite us to consider how we re investing in each of these capitals both individually and as a church. You ll have a chance each week to consider your investment in each and we ll give you some talking points to discuss as a family. When our oikononmics are in order, we can 10 then become the family Jesus invites us to be!
