1 November 29, 2015 First Sunday of Advent "Lord, give me a sign." How many times have we spoken these words or something like them to ourselves in hopes that our prayers have been heard, or that we have chosen the right path? Such signs, perhaps, aren't hard to come by, only difficult to recognize for what they are. Jesus speaks of ominous signs preceding the coming of the Son of Man. Still, his is not a gloomy announcement. Instead, he tells us to stand tall and to raise our heads. We can almost hear the joy in his voice. FINDING OUR WAY There's a catch, though. Isn't there always? But this catch is something that we can handle. It calls us to grow in the ways of Christ, to ready ourselves in prayer and action for his coming some day as the world's judge and redeemer, and every day into our individual hearts as our own personal savior. Advent helps us to remember this. We have long been told that this is a season of preparation that can bring us to Christmas morning a changed people. As with any period of preparation, though, we will get out of it only what we put into it. Trite? Maybe. True? Definitely. Many of us have already put up our Christmas lights. So many of us have already drafted our lists and have begun our holiday shopping. Indeed, some of us have even started to wrap our purchases in preparation for the big day. But let us not forget that we have more impor - tant things for which to prepare. Jeremiah's "just shoot" is being raised up before us. Now is the time to listen to Paul's exhortations. Now is the time to live in a way pleasing to God. For in so doing, we will become our own sign to the world not one of darkness but one of hope and light, a sign that the Lord's kingdom is already upon us. Today's Readings: Jer 33:14-16; Ps 25:4-5, 8-10, 14; 1 Thes 3:12-4:2; Lk 21:25-28, Copyright 2015, J. S. 3 November 29, 2015 Page 3 Dear Parish Family, PASTOR'S CORNER Let me be among the first to wish you a very Happy New Year! No, it's not time for the funny hats and masks nor the bubbly champagne or the confetti...or even for making resolutions. Today is the First Sunday of Advent which marks the beginning of the New Liturgical Year. What's a liturgical year? It's the way the church organizes its celebration of and invites us to participate in the waiting for the coming of Christ, his birth, public ministry, suffering, death, resurrection, ascension and sending of the Holy Spirit to enrich the Church. Like any New Year we begin this process once again. The First Sunday of Advent calls us to begin our yearly preparation for the coming of the Lord, the coming of the Messiah. We might not find it that exciting since we know that the Lord has already come and will come again at the end of time. At the same time he comes again, today, to meet us where we are and to invite us to reflect on the Father's love and then live the Son's message of service to all through the power and inspiration of the Hoy Spirit. Once again we are encouraged to not rush Christmas. This is not an easy task when television, the Internet and other forms of media are shouting out Christmas even before the month of Christmas arrives. A time of waiting is sacred. Think back on your thought process whenever you are waiting for someone or something. You think about the person, you imagine what the event will be like. In effect, it's the first part of the celebration itself...the conscious waiting for the real thing. Thinking about someone or some event helps us become more appreciative of the place the person or the event has in our life. While sometimes we might like a surprise, often the conscious process we experience through waiting is a good part of the ultimate pleasure of having. The Season of Advent invites us to enter into the excitement of anticipation, of waiting for the One who can satisfy the longings in our heart like no other person or event could ever hope to do. We will know how well we prepared, how well we waited when the day arrives and we are filled with ajoy that cannot completely be explained. The Lord will be in our midst. Today we wait. Today we prepare. Today we celebrate the beginning of the journey of faith. Happy New Year! Thou2ht for the week: "After eating an entire bull a mountain lion felt so good he started roaring. He kept it up until a hunter shot him. Moral: When you're full of bull, keep your mouth shut." Have a great week ahead! Fr. Richard
