Hear the Bible Read this as a Group Now an angel of the Lord said to Philip, Go south to the road the desert road that goes down from Jerusalem to Gaza. So he started out, and on his way he met an Ethiopian eunuch, an important official in charge of all the treasury of Candace, queen of the Ethiopians. This man had gone to Jerusalem to worship, and on his way home was sitting in his chariot reading the book of Isaiah the prophet. The Spirit told Philip, Go to that chariot and stay near it. Then Philip ran up to the chariot and heard the man reading Isaiah the prophet. Do you understand what you are reading? Philip asked. How can I, he said, unless someone explains it to me? So he invited Philip to come up and sit with him. The eunuch was reading this passage of Scripture: He was led like a sheep to the slaughter, and as a lamb before the shearer is silent, so he did not open his mouth. 6 7

go: global 9.2 In his humiliation he was deprived of justice. Who can speak of his descendants? For his life was taken from the earth. The eunuch asked Philip, Tell me, please, who is the prophet talking about, himself or someone else? Then Philip began with that very passage of Scripture and told him the good news about Jesus. Talk about the Bible What it says 1. What did you like about this story? As they traveled along the road, they came to some water and the eunuch said, Look, here is water. Why shouldn t I be baptized? And he gave orders to stop the chariot. Then both Philip and the eunuch went down into the water and Philip baptized him. Acts 8:26-38 (NIV) Live and Tell 5. Hear the Bible Read this as a Group Background: John, one of the original twelve disciples, has a vision of heaven and of the last days. At this point in the vision, John is brought to heaven and sees the throne of God and a crowd begins singing a song in praise of Jesus. And they sang a new song: You are worthy to take the scroll and to open its seals, because you were slain, and with your blood you purchased men for God from every tribe and language and people and nation. You have made them to be a kingdom and priests to serve our God, and they will reign on the earth. Then I looked and heard the voice of many angels, numbering thousands upon thousands, and ten thousand times ten thousand. They encircled the throne and the living creatures and the elders. In a loud voice they sang: Worthy is the Lamb, who was slain, to receive power and wealth and wisdom 10 11

go: global 9.3 and strength and honor and glory and praise! Then I heard every creature in heaven and on earth and under the earth and on the sea, and all that is in them, singing: To him who sits on the throne and to the Lamb be praise and honor and glory and power, for ever and ever! The four living creatures said, Amen, and the elders fell down and worshiped. Revelation 5:9-14 (NIV) What it means 3. What does this story teach about people? How does this picture of heaven change the way you view earth? What different ethnic groups live near you? Talk about the Bible What it says 1. What did you like about this story? 4. Hear God s Word Read this as a Group In the church at Antioch there were prophets and teachers While they were worshiping the Lord and fasting, the Holy Spirit said, Set apart for me Barnabas and Saul [later called Paul] for the work to which I have called them. So after they had fasted and prayed, they placed their hands on them and sent them off. [They traveled through Cyprus and then into Asia Minor and came to the city of Pisidian Antioch. ] We tell you the good news: What God promised our fathers he has fulfilled for us, their children, by raising up Jesus. Therefore, my brothers, I want you to know that through Jesus the forgiveness of sins is proclaimed to you. Through him everyone who believes is justified from everything you could not be justified from by the law of Moses. [They then travel on to the city of Derbe] 14 15

go: global 9.4 They preached the good news in that city and won a large number of disciples. Then they returned to Lystra, Iconium and [Pisidian] Antioch, strengthening the disciples and encouraging them to remain true to the faith. We must go through many hardships to enter the kingdom of God, they said. Paul and Barnabas appointed elders for them in each church and, with prayer and fasting, committed them to the Lord, in whom they had put their trust....from Attalia they sailed back to Antioch, where they had been committed to the grace of God for the work they had now completed. On arriving there, they gathered the church together and reported all that God had done through them and how he had opened the door of faith to the Gentiles. You can go with I am Second or you can go with someone else but find a way to go global. Be balanced. As you go global remember all that God has called you to do. Use the graph below to help you evaluate your go global project and even your own group. How to lead your I am Second group Start Groups: Local and Global. Whether you go local or go global, the principles stay the same. Starting I am Second Groups looks the same wherever you go. You have lived out these principles locally in your own I am Second Group. 13 leader s guide helps go: global 9.1 Summary: Jesus said, Go and make disciples of all nations. God wants more than Sunday morning attendance. He wants people radically committed to take his message to the world. The Holy Spirit empowers you and Jesus sends you. He sends you locally to your Jerusalem and he sends you globally to the ends of the earth. Will you go? Talk with God: Following Jesus model (illustrated by the various parts of the hand) you have learned to talk with God in a balanced way. Relationship. Worship. Surrender. Ask. Forgive. Protect. Worship. Some days you will take one or two of these topics. Other days you may do all six. What will you talk with God about today? Spend some time right now talking with God. Some Help with the Discussion Have you talked about the main things? 1. What did you like? Jesus sends his followers locally, to Jerusalem, regionally, to Judea and Samaria, and globally, to the ends of the earth. He leaves nothing out. God plays no favorites. He wants the whole world to know him. God has sent you and your I am Second group as his ambassadors and his messengers. Jerusalem are those near you, like you. Judea are those like you but further away. Samaria are those who may share your culture but are neglected or abused. 2. What did you not like or find confusing? What exactly does Jesus tell his followers to do in these passages? Some think that Jesus sends believers out to do good deeds like building houses and helping the sick. Sharing the love of God with people in need is part of this call, but he wants more. He wants you to make disciples, to baptize, and to teach the commands of Jesus. Build houses for the homeless, fill the stomachs of the hungry, but do not forget to meet the spiritual needs of people who need a personal relationship with God through faith in Jesus. Others think Jesus wants people to go out and tell people the gospel. True again, but still incomplete. The basic story or gospel of Jesus does need to be told, but that is just the beginning, as Jesus wants people to be taught everything that he commanded. This requires more than a radio commercial and a nice tract. This requires that churches or I am Second groups be started so that people can continue to learn about Jesus long after you leave. 3. What does this teach about people? Go global. Jesus does not offer this as an option or as extra credit. Making disciples locally and globally is the call of every person who claims to follow Jesus. Some must fulfill this call by sending others. Others must go themselves. What is God calling you to do? What will your group do? 4. What does this teach about God? Jesus wants you to go global. But just showing up on foreign soil is not enough. He wants you to make disciples. He wants you to teach others what you have been taught. Pass on what you know. Teach them how to share their faith, how to be a stronger Second, how to make disciples, how to start and lead groups. Jesus wants you to teach others everything he has taught you. Live and Tell 5. What will you do? Jesus was clear. He wants you to go global. How will you fulfill this call? Will you go on Expedition? Will you give so others can go? How will you and your group go global? Be specific. For details on how to find an Expedition go to 6. Who will you tell? You have been commanded to go and teach others everything Jesus has commanded you. Who will you tell about what you have learned today? go: global (where?) 9.2 Summary: God sent Philip on an expedition to share Jesus with an Ethiopian. The Ethiopian was searching for God, but needed someone to teach him and guide him. So God chose Philip to go, and then told Philip where to go to meet the Ethiopian. The world needs to hear about Jesus. You are his messengers. Jesus has sent you to tell them. Go and find open people who want to hear about Jesus. Ask God to give you direction about who he has prepared for you to talk to. Check-up: If people did not do what they committed to do, consider going back and reviewing the last discussion topic again. It is important that people do what they say they will do before moving on. Some Help with the Discussion Have you talked about the main things? 1. What did you like? Jesus said Go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Philip went, discipled him by teaching him, and then baptized him. God used Philip to reach a man who was searching and looking for God. Philip obeyed. 2. What did you not like or find confusing? Why are you supposed 22 23

leader s guide helps to do baptism? In Mark 1:1-11 a man named John encouraged people to turn away from evil and repent from their sins. He encouraged the people to symbolize this turning away from sin by being washed clean with water in a local river. Jesus was baptized by this man also, not because he needed to repent but because it was a symbol of a changed life that he wanted his followers to imitate. For a refresher on baptism download 3.0 Jesus Says. God sent an angel to direct Philip to the Ethiopian eunuch, but God rarely speaks so directly to his people. The point of this story is not wait for an angel to send you before you go, but listen to God. Ask God where he wants you to go. Listen for the Holy Spirit, listen for wisdom, look for guidance from other followers of Jesus. 3. What does this teach about people? Find spiritually open people. Listen for God to tell you where he is sending you. Make a list of the people in your life. Ask God to give you opportunities and the courage to start spiritual conversations with people you meet. Ask God to send you where he is working. For a refresher on how to share Jesus, get the What s First discussion guide at iamsecond.com/groups. 4. What does this teach about God? God is working in people s lives. He brought the Ethiopian to a point where he was ready and wanting to hear about Jesus. God is preparing people both in your life and around the world to respond in the same way to the story of Jesus. Ask God to show you these people. They may live down the street or around the globe. Be willing to go wherever God sends. Live and Tell Go to Look through the trip options. Ask God if he wants you to go on Expedition. go: global (why) 9.3 Summary: A picture of heaven. People from every tribe and every nation stand before God and sing his praises. God wants everyone to know him. No country and no people group is outside his reach. What will you do to help make this vision come true? What is your role in God s plan to reach the world? Check-up: Obedience is key. If you or your group has not followed through with what you committed to do, consider going back to the previous lesson. It is important that everyone follows through with their commitments before moving on. Some Help with the Discussion Have you talked about the main things? 1. What did you like? Jesus did not die just for the Jews, he did not die just for the Egyptians, he died for everyone. He wants people from every tribe and every language to know and worship him. Through his death on the cross Jesus has provided a way for people of every ethnic group to go to heaven. These people are made into a great kingdom to be priests before God. 2. What did you not like or find confusing? If everyone will one day praise Jesus, then why the command to go and make disciples of all nations? Jesus describes the coming judgment in Matthew 25: To some he will say, Come, you who are blessed by my Father, take your inheritance. To others he will say, Depart from me, you who are cursed. When judgment day comes, everyone will recognize Jesus as Lord, but only those who committed to follow Jesus and accept his salvation before this day of judgment will be saved. 3. What does this teach about people? God is concerned for your neighbors, but he is also concerned about the rest of the world. He wants every tribe and language to be represented in heaven. As Ken Hutcherson learned, Jesus died for people of every ethnic group. Racism, whether through active hatred or passive neglect, is profoundly against the message and mission of Jesus. 4. What does this teach about God? God wants people from every nation to be in heaven. He does not play favorites and he has not forgotten the neglected or abused peoples of this world. He wants you to share his love and concern and he wants you to be a part of reaching these lost nations and people groups. go: global (what?) 9.4 Summary: Paul and Barnabas were in their church at Antioch when God spoke to them and told them to go global. The church prayed for them and sent them out to share the story of Jesus with the world. Some of you can go. Others can send. Everyone can do something to go global. What will you do? Check-up: The last time you met your group discussed the command to go global. What have you done towards meeting your Live and Tell commitments? If your group has not taken any steps towards obedience consider going back to the previous lesson. It is important that everyone follows through with their commitments before moving on. Some Help with the Discussion Have you talked about the main things? 1. What did you like? Paul and Barnabas obeyed God s call to go. They shared the story of Jesus with people who did not know. The church at Antioch prayed and supported them

leader s guide helps Jesus told his followers to go tell the world. Paul, Barnabas, and the church at Antioch obeyed. 2. What did you not like or find confusing? The Holy Spirit directly spoke to the people at the Antioch church and told them to send Paul and Barnabas. God may not speak quite so directly to your group, but that does not mean he does not want you to go. Jesus made it clear, Go and make disciples of all nations, (Matthew 28:19). Maybe God wants you to go on Expedition. Maybe God wants you to send someone else. Maybe God has something else for you to do. Ask God. Discuss with your group. What does God want you to do? Live and Tell What is God calling your group to do? Will you go global? Will you go on Expedition? What will you do to fulfill God s call to go global? go: global plan What will you do? You have heard Jesus call and seen God s heart for the world. Will you go global? What will you and your group do to go global? Take some time with your group and discuss how you will Go Global. Write down your action steps. Make a plan. Use the Global Plan worksheet to plan out your global efforts. 3. What does this teach about people? God uses people to spread his message. The message is simple. Jesus came to earth and died to forgive sin and set people free. That is the message you bring when you go global. God does not just send pastors, missionaries, or super- Christians. He has sent you. 4. What does this teach about God? God wants the whole world to know him. That includes your neighbors around the corner and people around the world. Teach others what Jesus has taught you

what is the DNA of an I am Second group? I am Second s immediate appeal is aesthetic with its slick design, cool website, and inspiring films. But the real difference is more than skin deep. As you lead, keep in mind the heart behind I am Second s materials: Notes Stories and small. Encourage people to tell their story. Listen to the stories of others. Then discuss stories from the Bible. Keep your group small (between 2 and 8 people) to maximize impact and allow everyone to discuss these stories. Everyone learns. Help people learn how to do these things themselves: a) tell others about Jesus, b) study the Bible, c) pray, d) live in community, and e) endure hard times. They learn these things as they go through the I am Second curriculum. Consider everyone a potential leader. View everyone as a potential leader, both before and after they trust Christ. Give people opportunities to lead if they continue to obey and progress. Hand over leadership roles to different people each meeting. Obedience based, not just knowledge focused. Allow the Holy Spirit to guide people in the life changes they need to make as you do the Live and Tell questions. Then as you start the next session, ask each Second to share how they did with their Live and Tell commitments. Consider not moving on if people did not complete them. This creates an environment in which loving Jesus means obeying Jesus. New groups rather than big groups. As people share with others, encourage them not to invite the new people to your group, but instead start a new group. Encourage new leaders to stay in your existing group, which is a learning group for them. Their new group becomes their leading group. So they get on the job training, but stay connected for ongoing training and accountability. Discuss and discover. Focus on the Bible. Trust the Holy Spirit to help each person discover the meaning of Scripture as your group discusses it. Lead through asking questions rather than lecture. Help everyone participate

where next? 1. Follow and trust Jesus. Want to follow Jesus? Tell him you know you do wrong. Tell Jesus you believe that He died to pay the penalty for your sins, and then rose from the dead. Ask Him to forgive you. Tell him you trust only in Him for eternal life. Commit to follow Him today. 2. Keep meeting. Download the next discussion guide and keep meeting. 3. Talk with God. God cares about what you are doing. He wants to work through you. He wants to change lives. Through this whole process, continue to ask God to give you His plan. Listen for His voice. You are only on your own if you forget to ask for God s help. Need help about how to talk with God? Download the free I am Second Prayer Journal at iamsecond.com/groups or purchase a printed copy through the I am Second store at iamsecondstore.com. 4. Keep it simple. In your I am Second group, forget big church models where a skilled musician leads worship and a highly trained teacher preaches a sermon. Teach new believers how to hear and respond to the leading of the Holy Spirit through His Word and in their hearts. Encourage everyone to take part. 5. Keep it biblical. They devoted themselves to the apostles teaching and to the fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer. (Acts 2:42) When you come together, everyone has a hymn, or a word of instruction, a revelation, a tongue or an interpretation. All of these must be done for the strengthening of the church. (1 Corinthians 14:26) Perhaps share a meal when you meet. Ask what the Lord has done in each person s life during the week. Make time to study God s Word. Discuss its meaning and specific applications. Don t answer questions yourself; point people back to Scripture. This helps to establish that the authority is God s Word, not a person. Take time to pray for one another and for those who have not put Jesus First. 6. Choose a Discussion Guide. Below is the I am Second core curriculum. We recommend going in sequence, for each guide builds on the ones before it. Download at iamsecond.com/getinvolved. Or order printed copies from the I am Second store. A good next step is highlighted below. Prayer Journal How to Start Second Group Film Discussion Guide (stories of Jesus relating to people) 1.0 What s First (how to tell others about Jesus) 2.0 Second Start (four steps to feed yourself spiritually) 3.0 Jesus Says (Part 1: how to live the seven basic commands of Jesus) 4.0 Jesus Also Says (Part 2: how to live the seven basic commands of Jesus) 5.0 Follow as I Follow (how to make disciples) 6.0 Multiply your Group (how your group can start new groups) 7.0 Lead (help others start to lead) 8.0 Go: Local (develop an Acts 1:8 strategy locally) 9.0 Go: Global (develop an Acts 1:8 strategy internationally) 10.0 Where to Go from Here (continue strong as a group) 11.0 Commit (commit to continue to obey Jesus) 7. Multiply. Don t let your group grow too big. As additional people become followers of Jesus, start new groups in their homes or work places. Teach those who lead people to Christ how to lead their own groups. Show them how to identify persons of peace through whom they can make more followers of Jesus and start more groups. 8.
