2 A WORD FROM FR. IVAN Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, Last weekend I started to give a brief explanation on the convocation of the Second Vatican Ecumenical Council. We spoke about Pope John XXIII who convoked the council. The uniqueness of this council was that it was convoked with bishops from the five continents for the first time in the history of the church. After Pope John XXIII s death, Pope Paul VI was elected in 1963 and the council was concluded in December1965. In these two years the Council Fathers wrote four constitutions: Dei Verbum, Sacrosanctum Concilium, Lumen Gentium and Gaudium et Spes. Dei Verbum is a constitution on the Word of God. At first the conciliar text makes precise the meaning of the Revelation of God: this is presented as authoritative within human history, with events and words intimately connected. In this horizon the truth of the Bible, is founded on the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, ands in the function of the salvation of every man (see DV 11). Dei Verbum 2: In His goodness and wisdom God chose to reveal Himself and to make known to us the hidden purpose of His will (see Eph. 1:9) by which through Christ, the Word made flesh, man might in the Holy Spirit have access to the Father and come to share in his divine nature (see Eph. 2:18; 2 Peter 1:4). Through this revelation, therefore, the invisible God (see Col. 1:15, 1 Tim. 1:17) out of the abundance of His love speaks to men as friends (see Ex. 33:11; John 15:14-15) and lives among them (see Bar. 3:38), so that He may invite and take them into fellowship with Himself. This plan of revelation is realized by deeds and words having in inner unity: the deeds wrought by God in the history of salvation manifest and confirm the teaching and realities signified by the words, while the words proclaim the deeds and clarify the mystery contained in them. By this revelation then, the deepest truth about God and the salvation of man shines out for our sake in Christ, who is both the mediator and the fullness of all revelation. Mutual Relationship between Scripture, Tradition and Magisterium. Jesus Christ commissioned the apostles to preach the Gospel to all nations. This is the source of truth and moral teachings. The Sacred Scripture and Tradition is a mirror of the pilgrim church that from the old testament and the new testament is living across the centuries. The magisterium is the teaching office of the church that is not above the Word of God but serves it and teaches on what has been handed to them. Relation and difference between Scripture and Word of God. Scripture is the written letter that was inspired by the Holy Spirit that when it is proclaimed in an assembly becomes for us Word of God made flesh. Luther and the Protestant Church made the mistake to separate the Scripture from the Tradition of the Church. Meanwhile in the church before the Council there was a sense of separation between the Old Testament and New Testament. Dei Verbum affirms the continuity between the New and the Old Testament and that therefore it is not possible to understand the New without the Old and that the Old is understood in the light of the New Testament. Recommendation of reading and praying with the scripture for the Christian faithful that gives us excellent knowledge of God. St. Jerome reminds us in his words, ignorance of the Scriptures is ignorance of Christ. This is present in our parish with the bible study presentation and in the Neo-Catechumenal Community where the Word of God is a Celebration in an assembly, a community which grows together in faith. God bless! Wishing you a blessed Sunday. Fr. Ivan Sant Page 2 FrIvanSant@churchofstbernard-stp.org St. Bernard
