Matthew 22:2 What does the word banquet stir in your imagination? Sloppy décor, negligence and carelessness are probably not the first things that come to mind! A banquet implies attention to detail, the enjoyment of fine things and the inspiration to bring your best. Jesus compared the kingdom of heaven to a banquet with an unexpected outcome. It wasn t just any celebration, but a royal feast hosted by a king; yet the invitation was scorned and derided by the intended guests. Even after opening the doors to everyone the king found a person clueless as to the occasion and ambivalent about participating. This isn t how banquets are supposed to work! True celebration both demands and inspires our very best. We sometimes forget this aspect of the kingdom in our practice of church, ignoring the gifts that God is placing before us to focus instead on our dissatisfaction with what we don t have. On Sunday, October 15 we re having a special worship at 10:00 AM to celebrate and enjoy the gifts that God is giving us through the people

2 and relationships of our congregation. This is not a banquet of food but of the many gifts each of you bring. We ll use a resource called Asset Mapping to identify some of these gifts and open new connections. All you need to bring is yourself! You are vitally important to the celebration God is inviting. Please plan to join us for this special event! God s peace, Pastor John BIBLE READINGS October 1 17 th Sunday after Pentecost Ezekiel 18:1-4, Psalm 25:1-9 Phiplippians 2:1-13 Matthew 21:23-32 ALTAR FLOWERS October 1 Kathy Taulu October 8 October 15 October 22 October 29 - October 1 Kathy Taulu October 8 October 15 October 22 October 29 - October 8 18 th Sunday after Pentecost Isaiah 5:1-7 Psalm 80:7-15 Philippians 3:4b-14 Matthew 21:33-46 October th Sunday after Pentecost Isaiah 25:1-9 Psalm 23 Philippians 4:1-9 Matthew 22:1-14 October th Sunday after Pentecost Isaiah 45:1-7 Psalm 96:1-9 [10-13] 1 Thessalonians 1:1-10 Matthew 22:15-22 October 29 Reformation Sunday Jeremiah 31:31-34 Psalm 46 Romans 3:19-28 John 8:

4 FAITH TRUST FUNDS: OUR LEGACY TODAY --- TOMORROW --- THE FUTURE OCTOBER 2017 It s that time of the year when the Trust Funds Committee needs to send out a refresher message: Not only are we sending out a message but also will be bringing it to you live in November at our annual Trust Fund Forum. Watch for details! This is a reminder of the WHO, WHAT, WHEN, and HOW to submit applications for grants and for scholarships. The Benevolence Fund is a non- perpetual fund in which both the principal and investment income will be available for distribution as determined by the Trust Funds Committee in compliance with the terms of the resolution. The primary purpose of this fund is to enhance the benevolent mission and ministries of this congregation as defined by the terms of the resolution. The Trust Funds committee has established an APPLICATION CYCLE -- a period of time during which interested groups or individuals are asked to submit their requests for gifts/grants, using the standard request form available from the church office after January 1 st and must be returned to the church office on or before February 28, That might seem to be a long time from now, but with holidays, etc. coming up, it s time to start thinking about it. After February 28 th, the Trust Funds Committee will review the Market Value of the Benevolence Fund and will designate the amount to be distributed during the upcoming year. The percentage will be guided by the total return on investment experience in the year just ended. The Trust Funds Committee will review all applications and will determine the recipients and amount to be distributed to those applicants. This review will be guided by the Updated Resolution of the FLC Trust Funds. The Trust Funds SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM is separate from the regular Distribution Program. The purpose of the Scholarship Program is to provide support to Faith Lutheran Church members who are pursuing post-secondary education. The amount available each year will be agreed upon by the FLC Trust Funds Committee and will depend upon the Trust Fund Investment performance. A 3-member Scholarship Selection Committee will review all applications and recommend the recipients to the TF Committee. Faith members that are interested in applying for a Trust Funds Scholarship may pick up a four page application form from the church office after January 1 st. The form contains a coversheet stating the Eligibility, Selection Criteria, Application Process, plus Additional Information. If you are interested in meeting with a Trust Funds Committee member to review the Faith Church Trust Funds Scholarship, please contact Jeff Fischer or Sandy Downey. Also, we invite you to the November Trust Funds Forum to learn more about the Faith Trust Funds scholarship and get your questions answered. As always, we welcome your questions and comments any time. 4

5 Thank You for School Kits On Sunday, September 10, an enthusiastic group of people packed school bags for Lutheran World Relief. We met our goal, completing 70 bags. That is awesome! In addition, we sent a bag of school supplies to Family Sharing, and we have a head start on items and bags for next year. We will also send $140 to Lutheran World Relief for shipping the bags where they are needed. Special thanks go to our sewers, Laverne Gresch and Marilyn Judson. These sewers provide much of their own materials as well as their time sewing the bags. Thank you to anonymous friends and relatives who also provided materials for the sewers. Thank you to Tom Christie for tying many knots. Thank you to all of you who so generously provided the school supplies needed to fill the bags or contributed to shipping costs. And thank you to Laverne Gresch and Esther Rusch for preparing the supplies to be packed into the bags. Seventy children somewhere in the world will be thrilled to have their own backpack filled with school supplies that they would not have had without your help. Your efforts will change their lives. Thank you! Thank you! Fall is here, and this is the time of year we begin to think about the annual Stewardship Drive here at Faith Church. This year our Stewardship Drive will be a little different from previous years. Near the end of October, Faith members will receive a mailing explaining the Drive and containing a pledge card for Sunday, November 5 th, will be Consecration Sunday. During the worship service we will bring our pledge cards forward indicating how we plan to be a part of Faith s ministries in God is at work among us and is inviting each of us to be the hands, feet and voice through which God works. You are invited to prayerfully consider how God is calling you to be a part of God s work. The Stewardship Team 5

They will be returning from Tanzania on Saturday, October 28 th and their presentation will be hot off the press.
