I had the privilege of meeting her many years ago at a liturgical conference. She was a member of the Franciscan Sisters of Perpetual Adoration in La Crosse, WI, the same sisters that staffed our grade school in Wausau. I remember her encouraging us to Keep on keeping on as she broke into song praising God. She was a charismatic preacher and leader, a singer of songs that spoke to her people and engaged so many others. She used her book learning to call Black Catholics to their rightful place. She spoke with heartfelt intimacy with bishops of the church and chided their poor cultural efforts and benign neglect of blacks. However, always compassionate, charming and careful when presenting the force of truth, she challenged her audiences. She told wonderful stories; she carried her spirit in her hands as she shared with others the immediacy of God and the warmth of the Holy Spirit. Sr. Thea Bowman was truly black and authentically Catholic, a pearl of great price (Ronald D. Harbor). Hongkham lives in Laos with her husband and their five boys. Her husband is a farmer, and the crops he grew fed their family. But when Hongkham s husband got sick, the family had to sell their land to pay for medicine and didn t have enough to eat. Hongkham needed a way to help her family. Her children s school-where CRS works with students and families-needed a chef. Since she loves to cook, Hongkham decided to volunteer-and everyone has benefited. Hongkham learns new ways to make healthy meals and receives some food each month to take home to her family. CRS provides lunches to students, which helps keep them in school so they can learn to read and write. And Hongkham s family now has nutritious food, and a new opportunity to grow and thrive. 7 february 21, 2016 second sunday of lent 7 Greetings From Christian Formation: Family and Youth Programs How May We Serve You? Matthew 25:35-40 For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me, I was naked and you clothed me, I was sick and you visited me, I was in prison and you came to me. Then the righteous will answer him, saying, Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you drink? And when did we see you a stranger and welcome you, or naked and clothe you? And when did we see you sick or in prison and visit you? The Lord will reply, 'Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.' On Saturday, April 23 rd our Youth from St. Catherine of Alexandria and St. Joan of Arc will be serving together as ministers to the people of our parish communities. Please let us know if you need help with a project at your home that our Youth might be able to assist with for example, raking, preparing a garden bed, cleaning windows, etc. We are also available to visit and play games with those who might just want some company. If you or if you know someone in our parishes who would benefit from the vitality and joy of our youth, please let me know as we are making plans and are here to serve! After our opening prayer, Father Mike provided a brief history and processes of the RCIA ritual while Ellen introduced each of the candidates. The CPC revisited the Wisconsin Parental Choice Program and reached a consensus to support the program for SJOA. The Trustees provided information regarding the budget process and Commission Liaisons provided reports from the Commission they represent. We welcome all parishioners to come and observe.

Help us to see the glory of your Son and forever be in awe of his presence. Grant that, during our Lenten journey, our hearts be filled with the light of your Son so that we might remain steadfast on the path of discipleship we committed to in Baptism. Help us to empty ourselves and embrace your Passion so that, on the day of Resurrection, we may joyfully share in the fullness of life. We ask this through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen. Sunday, February 21, 2016 Dazzling White Today s Readings: Genesis 15:5 12, 17 18; Psalm 27:1, 7 8, 8 9, 13 14; Philippians 3:17 4:1; Luke 9:28b 26. Take a few moments to pray with the Gospel. What image stays with you? My imagination was captured by the words dazzling white. What does this look like? Placing myself in the story, I began to wonder what it would have been like to accompany Jesus to this place. Would I have understood what was happening, or, like Peter, would I have wanted to set up camp and remain in the presence of God s glorified Son? The words dazzling white brought to mind the white garment at Baptism and how when we come out of the waters of rebirth, after having died with Christ, we are clothed in dazzling white, a sign of our resurrection with him. Baptism isn t just a ritual we enact but a covenant with God, a covenant that demands faithfulness and action. We must come down from the mountain and journey with Christ and serve his people. Baptism changes us and redefines our relationship with God. During this Lenten season, the whole Church walks with those preparing for Baptism. As we journey, each of us is asked once again to die to self so as to be open to the Light of Salvation. This Lenten journey will prepare us to renew our covenant at the Vigil of Easter so that we might recommit ourselves to the covenant made in Baptism and faithfully carry out Christ s works. If possible, find your baptismal garment or some pictures from your Baptism and use them in your prayer with this Gospel.
