4 P A G E 4 Kamp Kaleo News As I write this, we have completed our 3 rd week of the 2016 Kamp Kaleo season: Adventures in Community 1 took place on May 31-June 3 with 13 campers; Junior High Camp was held June 5-10 with 36 campers; and Senior High camp, June 12-17, had 37 campers in attendance. Senior High Camp this year was blessed by the presence of 2 Disciple Peace Interns, Matthew Capestro, a seminary student from mid-missouri, and Rachel Shomali, a student from Bethlehem, Palestine. Matthew and Rachel served as counselors and presented workshops on topics of peace and justice. Here is a link to the Disciple Peace Fellowship, more information about peace interns, and Matthew s and Rachel s blogs of their summer experience: We have powerful things happening this summer in ministry to our children and youth. 5 Youth and Outdoor Ministries D Arcy Blosser, Chair of YOMC Committee for DOC Region & UCC Conference yomcdarcy@gmail.com Kristy Horstman, Youth and Outdoor Ministries Coordinator kristinlynn@rocketmail.com P A G E 5 Friendly Spaces in the Desert is the focus for Kamp Kaleo s 2016 Mission Project. As part of the camp experience each year, campers and staff learn about a specific need, especially one that impacts children and youth. We alternate between local somewhere in the U.S. - and international needs. Last year s mission efforts raised over $3,000 for CrossOver Prison Ministries of Omaha which was started by First Central Congregational Church members in CrossOver is a non-denominational non-profit organization which collaborates with churches, social service agencies and other organizations to assist people in prison and their families. This year s mission project is a colorful one! At our February 2016 YOMC meeting, we identified the refugee crisis as a target mission project, specifically looking at the Orthodox Initiative in the Middle East through our shared Global Ministries. A recent update featuring Outdoor Spaces in the Desert enabled us to identify a specific project and location. ) We have purchased three brightly colored canopies for use at Kamp for gathering space and family groups. A large display in the dining hall features our mission project. Monies raised will be sent to the Orthodox Initiative through Global Ministries to purchase canopies, tables, chairs, school materials, sports equipment, toys, and other items needed to help build community in these refugee camps. In the first 3 camps, nearly $2,000 was raised!! 10 copies of The Guidebook, an NRSV student Bible have been placed in the Kamp library for use by campers and staff. If campers do not have Bibles of their own, these Bibles will go home with them. A Camp in a Day event is being planned for young people who cannot get away for a week at Kaleo. Long term plans include taking camp to a community (one east, one west) for a day of activities, study and community each year. We are planning one Camp in a Day in 2016; more information will be coming soon. The Grounding Our Faith at Kaleo working retreat that was scheduled for April was postponed due to low registrations. We are planning to reschedule this event with more lead time to promote and interest folks. The goal of this retreat is to learn much about our land, water, and natural resources. Our desired outcome is to develop learning tools (sign posts, web site additions, a possible future summer camp, and written materials and guides) to help us share this knowledge with children, youth, and adults campers, retreat participants, and visitors to Kamp Kaleo, lifting up the rich connection and spiritual resources we have in God s creation. A fall youth retreat for middle and high school youth will be held at Kamp Kaleo on October 14-16, 2016; planning task group includes Pastor Howard Blecha, Shelby Moock and Kristy Horstman. Additional planning team members will be recruited from the region and conference; if you would like to be part of this team, contact Kristy at or kristinlynn@rocketmail.com. Information regarding the NE/KS Disciples Joint Regional Assembly to be held on Nov. 11 & 12 in Salina, KS will be coming soon. Nebraska DOC and UCC youth will be invited to attend a special youth event planned with this assembly. The NE IAS for youth this spring was a success with Sandy Denton and Cathy Becker serving as sponsors. Our next scheduled NE IAS trip would take place in 2018 (every other year). Until recent years we shared this program with the Colorado region. That partnership diminished with leadership changes, particularly in Colorado, and with fewer and fewer CO youth participating. YOMC will explore what a possible partnership with KS might look like, as well as contact the CO region again to see if they are interested. We definitely want to continue offering this life changing event for our young people! Our next YOMC meeting will take place on September 11, If you have any questions about YOMC and/or our planning for children and youth in Nebraska, contact D Arcy Blosser or Kristy Horstman.

7 P A G E 7 Emmaus Encounter Charlotte Liggett Program Director, Emmaus Road Discipleship School cmliggett2010@aol.com Journeys begin in our hearts and minds and souls. As Christians, we sometimes call these pilgrimages. And pilgrimages are gaining in popularity in our times. Pilgrimages are journeys where we seek a deeper communion with God and get to travel with other fun folks. You are invited to SAVE THE DATE of an important journey, a pilgrimage, that will take place October 21-24, Please consider going on this first Emmaus Pilgrimage with us. The pilgrimage, sponsored by the Emmaus Road Discipleship School, will include Union Avenue Christian Church in St. Louis, MO; Abbey of Gethsemani in Louisville, KY; and Cane Ridge near Paris, KY. Cane Ridge is the site of the 1801 Revival, which was part of the Second Great Awakening in America and gave rise to the Christian Church, Disciples of Christ. Please SAVE THE DATE and watch the Emmaus Encounter for additional details in the coming months. In the meantime, if you d like more information please feel free to contact Charlotte Liggett (cmliggett2010@aol.com) or Jessica Stoner (pjstoner2@windstream.net). Blessings.
