Now we ask you and urge you in the Lord Jesus to do this more and more. For we know what instructions we gave you by the authority of the Lord Jesus. - I Thessalonians 4:1-2 The Community Group of women I lead on Wednesday mornings is called the 10:25 Group. It s not because we meet at 10:25 AM, but rather, we named ourselves after Hebrews 10:25, which says, Let us not give up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but let us encourage one another and all the more as you see the Day approaching. We seek to live this out together at our weekly times of fellowship and studying God s Word. During our inductive Bible study of I Thessalonians, we focused on I Thessalonians 4:1-2 (see above). The emphasis of our study was PLEASING GOD. We studied passages that spoke about what it means to please God, and what displeases God. Here are just a few: The LORD detests the sacrifice of the wicked, but the prayer of the upright pleases him. - Proverbs 15:8 I urge, then, first of all, that requests, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for everyone for kings and all those in authority, that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness. This is good, and pleases God our Savior, who wants all men to be saved and to come to a knowledge of the truth. - I Timothy 2:1 Therefore, I urge you, brothers, in view of God s mercy, to offer your bodies as living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to God which is your spiritual act of worship. - Romans 12:1 And without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to him must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who earnestly seek him. - Hebrews 11:6 We also studied Noah (Gen. 6:5-9), Job (Job 1:8) and Jesus (Luke 3:21-22). I exhorted our group to make it our highest aim in life to please God, rather than to please man/people. It s easy to be a people-pleaser because we fear what others think of us, and we want people s approval rather than God s. But He matters most. What a gift we offer to God when we, not always perfectly, yet sincerely desire to honor Him through our lives and hearts. There is no wealth, no possession nor treasure which matches the incomparable joy of pleasing God. As we finished our study, I felt tears sting my eyes because I felt both the passion and the clarity of what I desire my life to be about: to please God! Rather than be a people-pleaser, I pray He will make me more and more a God-pleaser! I also quickly realized how short I fall of this. But because God revealed in His Word that it is His will that I live a life pleasing to Him, that we as His chosen people can live a life pleasing to Him, by His grace, He is able to do this good work in us! May we make it our greatest joy and aim in life to please and honor God!

For those of you new to GVBC, the Board of Deacons meets once a month. During these meeting we discuss financial matters, plan for future events, and make decisions on anything which may affect our church as a whole. The Board is made up of members of our church. They are elected by the whole membership at our Annual Business Meeting. This month we approved a Seminarian Scholarship for Priscilla Babilla and updated the Children s Camp Scholarship program. We also approved Pastor Steve s short sabbatical coming up next month along with a general discussion on sabbaticals. One of our monthly topics is the financial health of the church. We have much to be thankful for as God continues to provide for our church through your generous offerings and tithes. Thank you! One thing we can continue to pray for involves leaders in our church. We are in need of leaders for several ministries: people who are willing to listen to God s call and step forward to help. Please pray for leaders and if God is calling you! One day you may get a call from someone asking for your leadership. Consider your answer carefully! I, too, once got a call like that. I spent some time and against my initial reaction, decided to acknowledge God s call. This decision was made in spite of being in the midst of an extremely busy time in my personal and professional life. God has blessed me through this decision. Please be open to His call! Your brother in Christ, Paul S. Hirano, O.D. Moderator Issue 8 Page 3

4 Baptism Testimonies from Sunday, April 11 Hello, my name is Randy Kusano. I am here to make a public declaration of my faith. After many years enslaved in the darkness of sin, bitterness and resentment saturated my soul. I felt hopeless and defeated with nowhere to turn. I can only praise God for utilizing this ministry in my radical transformation into the Light of Christ. The pastoral staff has done an exceptional job in educating and preparing me for my journey. My faith transcended into a loving bond with Jesus during a class taught by Pastor Ron [Matsuda], Basic Christianity. Ron gave me a clear perception about crossing the bridge, and having a personal relationship with Jesus Christ. After receiving Him as my Lord and Savior, my whole outlook on life has changed. Now, I am at peace with myself, knowing I am saved through God s grace and mercy. Today, I commit myself with all my, heart, mind, soul, and strength to our Creator. Let my old self be put to rest while my new self shines in the Light of Christ, forever. My mother [Dorothy Kusano] will be lighting my candle. She has been very inspirational to me in my spiritual growth. Paul Matsushima: I grew up in this church and accepted Christ at a young age. But, I fell away during high school because I desired a new identity. Growing up, people knew me as the super quiet kid. I hated being labeled this so I turned to drugs, alcohol, and the party life to adopt a new identity that portrayed me as a bad, rebellious kid. My fear drove me to drugs and alcohol. I was self-conscious about my personality and thought I was drab and boring. So, I would get drunk or high to become funnier or more outgoing. People began to see me as wild and risky. I thought my behavior made me look cool and popular in the eyes of my fellow high school and college students. I was the rebel without a cause, the daredevil who was willing to do or try anything. It took me 21 long years of masking my real self to realize God accepts me and loves me exactly as I am. He created me to be me, therefore, I don t have to prove myself, conform to other people s opinions, or adopt a new persona. Since accepting Christ two years ago, Jesus has not only freed me from the drugs, but He is also continually freeing me from my fears and self-consciousness. I no longer need to fear that people won t like or accept me for my inadequacies. I am not as worried about how people view me. Christ not only saved me from my addictions to sin, but He is also restoring and healing my heart. I am now free to be genuine, authentic, and especially, to be myself. My name is ZaV o nia Fitts. I m 16 years old and I have accepted Jesus Christ as my savior. I accepted Him when I was about 10 years old, however, when I was 13, I began to doubt the existence of God and I fell completely away from him. My life was quickly spiraling down to nothingness and I gave up on ever trying to bring it back up. In May of last year, my cousins invited me out to a High School Epicenter at GVBC. Since then I have been coming out. But, for the first 3 months here I still had no hope of being able to fix my faith. Then, summer camp came up. I went to camp because I wanted to get away from the real world for a while. I did not expect to have any changes in my faith, but camp was the one thing that brought me back to Christ. During camp, I recommitted my life to Christ and since then my faith has sky-rocketed. I grow more every day and I am finally trying my best to live the way God wants me to. I recently went to winter camp and it made me realize many of my flaws that are preventing me from moving forward in my relationship with Christ. And, I have made it one of my top priorities to change those aspects of my personality so I may become even stronger in my walk. I still struggle a lot with every day that passes and I continue to struggle with trusting Him with all the obstacles that occur in my life, but I am trying my best, too. I know, soon, I will be able to give it all to Him regardless of the situation and regardless how much I want to try and do it on my own. Three years ago I was on a pathway of complete destruction a pathway where giving up was the only option I could choose. Now, I stand here today on a pathway of hope and joy a pathway where moving forward is the only option I will ever consider choosing. For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God (Ephesians 2:8). He is the only one who can save me. Even though I know I do not deserve it, I am so grateful for all He has done and sacrificed for me. Jesus will forever be my Savior and I will live my life praising Him in all I do. [Testimonies continued in the next issue] Page 4

5 Family News Our Condolences and prayers go out to: Herb & Ruth Kawai and family in the recent passing of Ruth s brother who passed away in Hawaii. The memorial service will be held in Hawaii at the end of April. There will be a memorial service for Yuki Ide [who passed away on April 1 in Japan], wife of Yoshihiro Ide and mother of Isaac & Alisa, on Saturday, May 1 at 1:00 PM at GVBC. Pastor Bunso Otani is officiating. Steven & Marie Takano and family in the passing of Marie s brother, Yoshihiko Makishi. The service will be held on Friday, April 23, 11:00 AM at the Venice-Santa Monica Free Methodist Church. Mission Field Beverly Brandrup On March 24, Beverly returned to Colombia for an anticipated stay of two months to help the deaf translation team. She prays there will be time for them to continue work on the story of Joseph, starting where they left off. The story is being translated from Spanish to Colombian sign language. The accompanying illustrations beautifully match the Scriptures on each page. Some are composites, which required several tedious steps, using different parts of pictures, to create the finished illustration. The illustrations visually grasp the concepts being taught in Scripture. Beverly requests prayer for continued contact with the Sirianos, enabling the New Testament to continue to be recorded into their language. This includes the illustrated story of Joseph, which needs to be checked by them. Beverly's final prayer request is, "Please pray that we may understand more and more about the Lord's ability to work out all things for the good of everyone who are called according to His purpose." Nehemiah 3 Update As we approach the last 8 months of the Nehemiah 3 building fund campaign, we are doing well. We are thankful that we are receiving donations from so many people who did not pledge to give to Nehemiah 3. As a result of these additional funds, we will exceed our pledged amount during the month of April. Praise God! This is encouraging so keep up the good work. At the same time, our goal is to meet our monthly loan payment of $28,046. We came close in March, receiving $24,027. The balance of the payment came from our reserves. Whether we receive above or below our monthly needs, we are thankful to God for what He does through you. Thank you for your support to Nehemiah 3. Issue 8 Page 5
