TTW 22:21 Do you see the trap these harisees were setting when they asked Jesus if it was lawful to pay the census tax to Caesar? f he had said that the tax was not lawful, he would have been branded as a revolutionary and a threat to the omans. f he had said that the tax was lawful, he would have been branded as a collaborator with the oppressive imperial regime. Jesus saw right through the trap (atthew 22:18). nstead of falling for it, he gave them a simple yet profound answer one that still asks us where we stand. What belongs to od is all of his creation: the plants and animals of the earth, the stars of the sky, the sea and everything in it. nd of course, his people all of us. s the stars shine and the moon glows, as the birds sing and the trees bloom, they give glory to od. ow much more should we, who are the crown of od s creation, give him glory and honor? This is how we repay to od what belongs to od by worshipping him, by following his commandments, and by reaching out to care for his loved ones. What about repaying to Caesar? Does it mean paying taxes so that police keep the peace, school buses run, and towns can care for the needy through social programs? Yes it does, and much more. That s because the way we repay to od should affect the way we repay to Caesar. t should move us to find ways to care for the poor and homeless, to visit the sick and the elderly, and to lift up the lonely. t should move us to work toward transforming our towns and cities step-by-step. t should move us to take care of people, not just pay our taxes. o what can you do for Caesar today? ere am, ord. Teach me how to change my corner of the world. Today s reflection is retrieved from The Word mong Us: Daily editations ( Whatever you did for one of these least brothers of mine, you did for me. 4 YUT YUCT CN What prompts a person to pray? We pray because we are full of an infinite longing and od has created us men for himself: ur hearts are restless until they rest in you (t. ugustine). But we pray also because we need to; other Teresa says, Because cannot rely on myself, rely on him, twentyfour hours a day. [ , 2591] ften we forget od, run away from him and hide. Whether we avoid thinking about od or deny him he is always there for us. e seeks us before we seek him; he yearns for us, he calls us. You speak with your conscience and suddenly notice that you are speaking with od. You feel lonely, have no one to talk with, and then sense that od is always available to talk. You are in danger and experience that a cry for help is answered by od. raying is as human as breathing, eating, and loving. raying purifies. raying makes it possible to resist temptations. raying strengthens us in our weakness. raying removes fear, increases energy, and gives a second wind. raying makes one happy. Do what you can, and pray for what you cannot, and so od will grant you the ability to do it. T. UUTN YU YUN & F? D YU WNT T KNW JU? D YU K FD &? W WUD V T T YU! T U Y ct of Contrition The ct of Contrition is usually associated with the acrament of Confession, but Catholics should also pray it every day. ecognizing our sins is an important part of our spiritual growth. Unless we acknowledge our sins and ask for od s forgiveness, we cannot receive the grace that we need to become better Christians. n the ct of Contrition, we acknowledge our sins, ask od for forgiveness, and express our desire to repent. ur sins are an offense against od, Who is perfect goodness and love. We regret our sins not just because, left unconfessed and unrepented, they can prevent us from entering eaven, but because we recognize that those sins are our rebellion against our Creator. e not only created us out of a perfect love; e sent is only begotten on into the world to save us from our sins after we rebelled against im. ur sorrow for our sins, expressed in the first half of the ct of Contrition, is only the beginning, however. True contrition means more than just being sorry for the sins of the past; it means working hard to avoid those and other sins in the future. n the second half of the ct of Contrition, we express a desire to do just that, and to use the acrament of Confession to help us do so. nd we acknowledge that we cannot avoid sin on our own we need od s grace to live as e wishes us to live. etrieved from ThoughtCo ( f we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. 1 JN 1:8 erciful edeemer arish Bulletin ctober 22-28,
